Rio de Janeiro,  Brazil,  land of Carnival and the Amazon,  plays host once again to this year’s rendition of the Grade 1  The Brazilian Oaks,  to be run at the classic dirt distance of a mile and a quarter.  The racing surface at Hipodromo de Gavea in Rio should be lightning fast for Sunday’s event,  thanks to the splendid weather in the southern hemisphere of late.  The full field of 14 three year old fillies will be shooting for the winner’s share of the $500,000 purse.  The victors’ trophy presentations will follow in the winner’s circle in what promises to be a wild victory celebration.  Let’s take a closer look at the field and see if we can find some contenders.

1
CANYON RISING             KY             alimitos7        70/1

Makes first start in a stakes of any kind,  while stretching out from longest career efforts.  Won a sloppy sprint with an  improved effort in last,  scoring a 91 SP#.  Trainer alimitos7 picks a  tough spot to test this bay daughter of Fusaichi Pegasus.  May show some late foot but the oddsmaker has her chances rated about right.

2
AKNA CHOICE             FR             musse3         9/1

Bay Redoute’s Choice filly by stakes winning sim-mare King Coyote makes first graded stakes attempt off sneaky good 7th last out in the Alyacademy Academy listed stakes at 9 furlongs.  She posted a 104 SP# while beaten only 1 ½ lengths in a blanket finish.  That snapped a 3 race winning streak, which were route allowances in Germany.  SP #’s are moving in the right direction of late for the musse3 stable,  has to contend with others in the early pace scenarios,  but could find herself alone on the front end,  possibilities.      .

3
ONYX  EVOLUTION         KY             tripwire        6/1

She brings a 3 race winning streak into her graded stakes debut, the last a convincing victory in the Ideally Suited listed stakes at 9.5 furlongs, scoring a 106 SP#.  This brown Distorted Humor lass out of the Grade 1 winning, million dollar earning sim-mare Arazawa won at this distance one prior in a NW4L allowance with a 100 SP#.  She started her spree with a NW3L allowance score at 9.5 panels, posting a 101 SP#.  Trainer tripwire looks to keep the winning streak going as well as notching a graded triumph; should be sitting just off the early pace and look to get the jump on the late comers.

4
CANDY TRAPPER             MD             millview10         52/1

Another making her graded stakes debut is this chestnut Lion Hearted filly from the sim-mare Jove Trapper from the millview10 stable.  She was a never close 6th last out in the Moms Command listed at 9 furlongs with a 92 SP#.  Was a nice 2nd in the Painted Daisy listed,  also at 9 panels with a 91 SP#.  Won an allowance at the same 9 panels one prior.  Seems a bit less talented than these, oddsmaker gets it right again.

5
BULLDOZE                 KY             racer             10/1

Owner racer tries Grade 1 company again after an even 5th in the G1 Sister Hen with a 100 SP#.  Light grey Awesome Again gal out of the G1 winning, million dollar earning sim-mare Overdoze was a nice 2nd one prior in the Zephryus listed stakes at 9.5 panels, earning a 101 SP#.  She was also 2nd in the Devine Legacy listed at this trip,  with a 100 SP#.  Versatile runner can benefit from a crafty jockey ride here,  may be along for a share.

6
PRESENT PEEKER             KY             winona         20/1

Lightly raced,  light grey daughter of Unbridled’s Song makes 4th career start in stakes debut. Was a fast closing 2nd at a mile in last in a NW3L allowance, posting a 100 SP#.  One prior was an allowance score at 7 panels with a 93 SP#.  Trainer winona  may have a real nice one here who just may make the step up in class.  Runs like the distance will be to her liking,  longshot chance in the lane.

7
SMOKE  RISES             KY             jonsnow         7/1

Another Distorted Humor filly, this chestnut lady from the jonsnow barn exits a front running 3rd in the First Ryder listed stakes at 9.5 furlongs,   earning a 100 SP#.  One prior was a wire to wire victory in the Jack Razing listed at 10.5 panels, scoring a field best 110 SP#.   Failed to hit the board in her 3 previous graded attempts, the best a front running 4th in the G1 Equinics – Young Guns at 9 furlongs in February.  She did start the year off nicely with a win in a residency listed, with a 100 SP#.  Should be part of the early pace,  may forget to stop on best effort.

8
THE SECRET BANSHEE         KY             jastables4         11/1

Seeks her third straight here in initial graded stakes try for owner jastables4.  Won a NW4L allowance at 10.5 furlongs last out in a stalking trip,  notching a 101 SP#.  Won the Second Summer listed stakes at this trip one prior, scoring a 99 SP# in a stretch running effort while holding off Sinful Desires.  Versatile runner has only finished out of the money once in 10 starts.  The distance should not be a problem for this chestnut Drosselmeyer filly.  It looks like the jock will have options here,  will he choose wisely ?    Could surprise.

9
DEVIL’S  CONSORT         JPN             spqr2nd         35/1

Brown Street Sense miss from the Grade 1 winning,  million dollar earning sim-mare War In Heaven, seeks third straight win after back to back allowance scores at 9.5 and 10 furlongs in Japan with 95 and 98 SP#’s.  Trainer spqr2nd gave her six months off in November and seems to have done the trick.  Took a while to get through her allowance conditions, makes her stakes debut here.  Likes to run close to the pace,  will need further improvement and smooth trip to contend here.

 10
SINFUL  DESIRES             TUR             jmsstable         17/1

Making her graded stakes debut is this brown Lionheart filly from the jmsstable racing outfit.  Last out she took the Baggio Summer listed stakes at the same distance as this event,  posting a 102 SP# in her initial stakes triumph.  One prior was a gaining,  close 2nd in the Second Summer listed,  also at 10 panels and earning a 99 SP#.  She’s bounced back nicely after a miserable 12th place run in her stakes debut at 9 furlongs.  Improving sort has won at this distance, can be a stretch factor with smooth trip.

11
IMPACT FACTOR             ENG             frankel         10/1

Looking for her third straight win,  Bay Oasis Dream miss from the he-mare Roswell’s Landing won over a good surface at 8.25 panels,  earning a 101 SP#.  One prior was a win at 8.5 furlongs in a statebred allowance, also with a 101 SP#.  Stretch runner from the frankel racing group makes graded stakes debut here;  distance may help but will need a contested pace and best effort to be in the picture in this heat.

12
BARDEN  BELLA             KY             theoc2         9/2

Trainer theoc2 sends out this late running bay daughter of Street Cry from the stakes winning sim-mare Kitty Katz.  She won the Grade 3 Meadow Oaks at 8.5 furlongs last out,  earning a 109 SP#.  One prior was an excellent 2nd in the G3 Selena,  also at 8.5 panels with a 106 SP#.  She was an even 4th from the far outside post in her graded stakes debut in the G1 California Oaks at 8.5 furlongs with a 106 SP#.  Another who is stretching out in distance today; should be gaining late, stretch threat.

13
ISABEL  I                 KY             fersara         5/1

Bay Birdstone filly out of the sim-mare CK Smart Bird exits a strong 2nd in the Grade 1 Chestnut at a mile,  scoring a 107 SP#.  One before that was a stalking trip win at 9 panels in a residency listed stakes with a 108 SP#.  She threw her only career clunker in the G2 Fantasia at 8.5 furlongs,  after winning the G3 SilverBulletBeer at the same 8.5 furlongs with a 107 SP#.  Got her sophomore campaign off on the right track winning a residency listed at 9 furlongs with a 104 SP#.  Trainer fersara stretches her out to the classic dirt distance of 10 furlongs,  should be right there at the finish – contender.

14
MOON  STARE  AWAY         KY             stoners         7/1

Malibu Moon bay filly comes off a late running 3rd over a “good” track in the Grade 3 Denny Tario at 9 furlongs, posting a 102 SP#.  She was outrun when 10th  in the G2 Black Middle Flower at 9 panels after a nice 3rd in the G2 Fantasia at 8.5 panels with a 102 SP#,   besting Isabel I that day.  She also finished a close 3rd in the G2 Louisiana Oaks at 8.5 furlongs with a 102 SP#,  after chasing Isabel I and finishing 3rd in the G3 SilverBulletBeer.  Owner stoners stretches her out also,  extra distance in this trip may help her stretch kick.
