The Empire State is our focus point this week for Saturday’s running of the Players Club National Oaks where a field of 14 three year old fillies will battle for a purse of $300,000.  They will go a mile and a quarter (10f) on the dirt to see who will take home the trophy and stamp her name in history. Some of these fillies have already met on on numerous occasions so it will be a rematch of who is the best and then you have the newcomers. There is a lot of Secretariat blood in this race and it will certainly be a battle but will one of the fillies with different bloodlines take the prize? We are expecting sunny skies and no rain for this marvelous race so without further adieu, let’s meet the field:
1 Giant’s Quality   woette6    $265,430   16/1
With ten career starts and four wins (one of which came from breaking her maiden first time out on the poly), she is looking for her first win on the dirt in the United States. The rest of her wins were on the dirt but on overseas tracks. The last time she raced on the NY track was on 6-28 where she finished in 8th place in the G1 Sister Hen Stakes.  I just hope that Giant’s Quality can get the distance being that she hasn’t run past 9f before. Two turns shouldn’t be a problem for her considering she has Secretariat in her blood through her sire and grandsire and I just hope that she doesn’t have a troubled trip with 13 others in this race
2  Darwinism      lenny26      $765,440     7/1
This filly is by the 2008 Breeder’s Cup Classic winner Raven’s Pass who is sired by the Illustrious Elusive Quality (also Secretariat blood).  She has four G1 races to her credit with three of them finishing 2nd and 3rd, respectively. She has never raced on a NY surface so I’m sure her owner and trainer lenny26 would love to get a win here as her earnings for dirt racing total $455,440 and I know the distance won’t be a problem for her either.  She has 3 wins to her resume, two of which came at UAE.
3  Anna Phalactic   dundey7   $421,970   9/1
Anna has some things to prove to her owner and trainer dundey and that is that she can handle the distance and NY, being another one who has never run in NY before. She has three wins to date but they are all on different tracks. After finishing 6th in the Grade 1 California Oaks, she was dropped down to starter class but she does have a Grade 2 win to date where she ran a good race stalking the pace and then made her move turning for home where she finished a head in front of Stormy Lyric.
4  Shadowfall     fairhaven6     $73, 234      14/1
This filly really has a lot to prove with going up against this field. She has only gone up against allowance and starter company and has raced mainly in Washington. She does have one good thing going for her  and that is being sired by the one and only, Smarty Jones, so she shouldn’t have a problem with handling two turns. With winning her last race by 2 1/2L in Brazil, just maybe she has something left in the gas tank for this field.
5   Kukaa Salama     platpuscz   $ 342,665   7/1
Here’s another f illy with Secretariat blood in her through her grandsire, A.P. Indy and she has an impressive race record with five wins and three seconds from nine career starts. Her last win was in ON where she won the G3 Denny Tario Oaks by 1 3/4L. She didn’t break her maiden until her third start and I look for her to stalk the pace and make her move turning for home.
6  Bonovita    blankpoin2    $1,328,440     13/1
Even though this filly is a millionnaire, I don’t see anything impressive with her. She only has 3 wins in ten starts and her last win was 11-02-2013 in the Breeder’s Bowl Juvenile Filly at a distance of 8.5f.  Her last time out in the G1 Chestnut Stakes, she had a troubled trip finishing in 12th, 9 3/4L behind the winner, We Want More.
7   Malibu Tune    bsben     $154,290    13/1
Malibu Tune, a filly with career starts has never raced against graded company but should be able to handle an extra furlong. Two questions remain: Will she like the NY surface and can she handle a large field? She does have three wins, all of which were from Kentucky and Louisiana and this filly is certainly a long shot going into this race.
8   We Want More    moreready     $400,991    7/1
We Want More is certainly living up to her name and with five wins from 14 career starts, her owner and trainer should be proud of her. This filly will have the same jockey that she had in the G1 Bluegrass Oaks and Sister Hen Stakes, A. Scheper. Having a jockey that knows about his mount is a good thing and this team won’t go down without a fight. She has wins in the G1 Chestnut Stakes and G2 Mellow Breeze Handicap with different jockeys.
9   Web Redemption    redhill10    $166,370    12/1
WR is another filly who has the same jockey that she had in the G1 Los Vinetrette Stakes and G3 Santa Jezebel Stakes (E. Seifert). Going off at odds of 12/1, I’m not quite sure if she will get this distance with an extra furlong added even though she won the 9.5f Oblivious S. Dirt Filly Route by 2 1/4 L at Idaho. Malibu Tune finished 3rd in that race too. The New York surface won’t be unfamiliar to WR as she broke her maiden there first time out.
10  Silver Shot K     lordbear3     $566,920    6/1
Here’s a filly that will be used to a large field having raced on 06-07-14 in The New Yorker and finishing a strong 5th out of 14 entries. She will get jockey K. Murray once again (as she had him in her last two starts).  K Murray has a win% of 21.6 for the last 12 months earning $8,477,329 with 331 wins out of 1530. Look for this pair to try to make a statement.
11  Buzzy Bulb     lordpye4     $3884,490    10/1
Buzzy is another filly looking for a Grade 1 win for owner lordpye4.  She began her racing career overseas and she only has three wins on US tracks (Belmont and Michigan). With a total of six wins from 14 starts, I know she can handle the track, but she hasn’t raced past 9f. She finished tenth in a field of 14 in the G1 Sister Hen Stakes so I think a large field will not be in her best interest and having a different jockey will make things interesting.
12  Derbyfeverdotcom    winningday     $1,069,220     8/1
Respectively named for the game, Derby Fever, this filly has three wins in graded company and she is another filly who broke her maiden first time out. Her only G1 win, the Equinics-Young Guns, she won from PP 8. She has also raced in large fields so and I think with this PP, she can get good track position, but jockey T Ace will have to see how the race plays out.
13  Tripped Me Off     blazsadcfo     $188,498    22/1
I don’t know if this filly’s pedigree is going against her or if she just likes the tracks overseas. Going off at odds of 22/1, she will have to pull off a miracle for owner/trainer blazsadcof. She has only raced in allowance and starter company and her last start was 06-07-14 in the Sara-Monti at 12f where she won by a head with jockey J. McGraw. In this race, she also faced 19 other horses so a large field won’t scare her away and she won’t have a problem with the distance either.
14  DT’s Packed Power      lglong2yoz     $230,283     13/1
To date, DT’s Packed Power is still looking for a graded victory along with a win on this New York track. From looking at her past performances, she can definitely handle the distance as her last win was on 6-14-14 at KY by 2 3/4L. Even having odds of 13/1, DT might just have what it takes to get to the wire first and with a record of 5-5-1 from 13 starts, jockey J. Piotrowski could just be the one to get the job done for owner/trainer lglong2yoz.
