Pablo Verces Handicap Preview

DETESTABLE (INTO MISCHIEF x ELUSIVE QUALITY x A.P. INDY)

Trainer: cylla1111

(22-9-6-1)

Out of the G2 winning mare DESPICABLE this son of INTO MISCHIEF is a multiple G3 winner already and one of two $1M earners in this field. Of the two $1M earners he’s looking like he’s got the better chance to take down this field then his counterpart. He’s likely to be favored in this one and should have the rest of the field on notice.

SUPER SNITZ (SNITZEL x TIZNOW x SEEKING THE GOLD)

Trainer: liam28

(12-6-2-2)

Outside of one bad performance in the G1 Double F Memorial, this lightly raced son out of the G2 winning mare BLUNDSTONE ARENA has run very well throughout his career. His only two finishes outside the money came in the aforementioned G1 and a maiden try on turf. Other than that he’s been ultra-competitive with his best performance coming in the form of a G3 Bluegrass Cup Sprint victory.

GHOST COMPANION (GHOSTZAPPER x NUREYEV x GONE WEST)

Trainer: hobbit

(25-12-1-2)

Out of the allowance winning mare LOYAL HARMONY, he’s another who’s coming off of his best performance taking down the G3 Uncle Vernon posting a 108 speed fig. His 12 career wins is by far the most in the field and he looks to be coming into his own of late.

KURBAT (NO NAY NEVER x A.P. INDY x FORTY NINER)

Trainer: Cavieres

(18-6-6-2)

Out of the G2 winning mare ELEGY, he’s on a 3 race win streak in which he took down two listed stakes at 5 and 5.5 furlongs. With that most recent 110 speed fig he’ll be a definite speed presence in this one but its worth mentioning he’s never won at a distance beyond 5.5 furlongs.

UNCLE INDY (UNCLE MO x A.P. INDY x TOM ROLFE)

Trainer: captainamerica

(28-4-2-3)

This son of UNCLE MO broke his maiden and has run at the stakes level or higher in every single one of his 27 other starts. Needless to say he’s the most battle tested horse in the field and is coming off his first graded victory since his 2-year old season. Inconsistency has been the name of his game but you can’t count him out given the most recent performance.

SO FAST SO FURIOUS (SPEIGHTSTOWN x SCAT DADDY x STREET CRY)

Trainer: homearoan

(13-4-5-2)

Out of the mare SCAT DADDY DO he’s coming off his best performance of his career where he earned a 107 speed fig in the Gillespie Dirt Sprint stakes. He seems to be on a bit of an uptick performance wise and could be a presence in how this one unfolds.

MAKES ME CRY (EMPIRE MAKER x STREET CRY x ESKENDEREYA)

Trainer: gemini1

(15-3-3-2)

Out of the SW mare CHE BELLA this son of EMPIRE MAKER has had a very mediocre career earning his SP badge in the 6F Narayan Dirt Sprint last August and only has a top speed fig of 102 for his career. It is possible that he turns a corner at the age of 4 as his momma seemed to hit her high point at the age of 4.

MIDSUMMER’S PARTY (HENNY HUGHES x HOUSEBUSTER x ROBERTO)

Wolf2472

(28-9-6-2)

He’s done his best work at today’s distance and is has been competitive at the allowance level as of late. Having run 28 times throughout his career he’s certainly one of the most seasoned runners in this field but it remains to be seen if he has the level of talent needed to get his G2 badge.

DARK PRIMO (EL KABEIR x SNITZEL x KING OF KINGS (IRE))

Alimitos11

(14-2-0-3)

Out of the SW mare SNITZEL DANCER whose best performance came last April with a 3rd place finish in the Seeking The Sun Dirt Sprint. His last two attempts at the graded level have been lack luster losing by a combined 26 lengths. Given the lack of victories in his career I’ll be looking elsewhere.

GOLD ZONE (AWESOME AGAIN x STORM CAT x DANZIG)

Trainer: spiderman1

(13-4-1-0)

Once upon a time he was on the derby trail. After winning the G3 Legoland he struggled mightily never finding the money in 7 additional tries at the graded level during his 3 year old season. His most recent performance was a last place finish in the 6 furlong G1 Double F Memorial. This weekend’s race is his first since November and since he hasn’t shown much in his recent form I’m looking elsewhere.

MURDEROUS SOUL (WAR FRONT x PULPIT x WILD AGAIN)

Trainer: mentalflos

(17-5-2-3)

He’s out of the G1 winning WANDERLUST II and has had a few cracks at stakes with his best finish coming in the form of a 4th place finish. He’s got some talent and a nice closing kick, but having never found the money in a stakes race or ran in a graded event is a big step up in competition for him.

VADA CRAFTY CAT (VADAMOS (FR) x CRAFTY PROSPECTOR x STORM CAT)

Trainer: wyndaway12

(18-2-1-3)

A 4 year old colt out of the mare CRAFTY KAT who’s only managed to be stakes placed thus far in his career. He’s had four attempts at graded company and hasn’t really been very competitive with his best finish coming in the form of a 7th place finish. He looks to be a bit overmatched in this one.

TURBULENCE T.  (HENNY HUGHES x GONE WEST x BLUSHING GROOM)

Trainer: graywolf20

(26-9-2-2)

The most accomplished runner in the field in terms of earnings and credentials, this G1 winning gelding has won only one race in his last 10 which was a 50K NW1T claimer. He was clearly a talented horse in his younger days but it would seem father time has caught up with him.

STRIKE PAY DIRT (BERNARDINI x SMART STRIKE x WILD AGAIN)

Trainer: piccolo

(11-5-3-0)

Since failing at the graded level on two separate occasions he’s run fairly well with his speed fig consistently improving in his last three which includes a stakes victory in the Gate Keeper Memorial. He should figure to be part of the early pace as his M.O. has been get the lead and catch me if you can.

Columnist Picks:

1. Ghost Companion

3. Super Snitz

Was this one written before entries came out? Hard For Kirby made the field, Turbulence T did not.
