California (CA)

Marcos Footwear Handicap
Grade II / Group 2*CPU - Purse : $375,000
Restricted to 4 Year Olds and Older
10 Furlongs | ~2000 Meters | One Mile and One Quarter Firm Turf

It would appear that there are a couple of nice G2 races on the card this Saturday in California. The G2, Marcos Footwear Handicap of which I am previewing is going to be at a distance of 10 furlongs on the Firm Turf for 4 year old and older horses. It appears the field of fourteen will be a nice host of colts and geldings with no mares in the field. This well decorated field of horses look to be very well matched which should make for a very competitive race as they attempt to get their share of the $375,000 purse and for one of them a trip to the winners circle. It will be interesting to see what happens as there are no clear big front runners in this race. The track looks good this morning and there is not a lot of chatter around the barns as they work hard on final preparations with their horses. The odds makers have posted their morning line for this race and the post positions have been drawn. Let us take a preview of the horses that will be running here in California for the Marcos Footwear Handicap.

Post Position: 1

Horse/Odds: Furys Fire 9/1
Sire: Scratch Bred (SHAMARDAL x NUREYEV x DYNAFORMER)
Owner: redvipers
Jockey: D Chancellor

The last trip to the winners circle for this 5 year old Brown Horse came back in April of last year going 10 furlongs on an off track in Paris in a $39,900 NW4L Allowance race. Since that time he has been lightly raced and has failed to hit the boards in four straight Graded outings. He ran last here in California in the G1, The Roberto Clemente Stakes where here crossed the wire in 4th and was 3 ¾ lengths back. He had jockey, D Chancellor from New Mexico riding that day and we will be seeing them pair up again for this race. They will be heading out at post time to represent the Racing HQ residency.

Post Position: 2

Horse/Odds: Approach Point 7/1
Sire: Point Of Entry
Owner: greta1
Jockey: T Tippins

This 6 year old Bay Horse has remained competitive in some recent Allowance level outings hitting the boards in his last two trips. He last raced on 12/21/2019 in New York in an 8.5 furlong $48,700 NW3y Allowance of which he hit the boards in 3rd that day. He will be running at a much longer distance in this race of which we will have to see how he steps up. He will have jockey, T Tippins from Vermont coming in for the ride with him. They have paired up a few times in the past, so this horse will be seeing a familiar rider up top come post time.

Post Position: 3

Horse/Odds: Image Of War 8/1
Sire: War Front
Owner: lionsfan
Jockey: H Desitter

This prior G2 winner is a 5 year old Bay Gelding who has not found the winners circle since winning the G2, The Sandy Ray Handicap here in California in March of last year. He has been running in many 12 furlong races but has not found the boards since that race last March. He last ran here in California in the G1, The Los Angeles Turf Cup where he showed up way back in 7th when he crossed the wire. He is taking a step back down in Class and Distance for this race to see if he can again find his way to the boards. He will have jockey, H Desitter from Nebraska up top who was the jockey that rode him in his last trip to the track. They will again pair together and head to their gate to represent the Empire State Racing residency.

Post Position: 4

Horse/Odds: Medaglia Reflected 6/1
Sire: Medaglia D’Oro
Owner: dkstables37
Jockey: F Gossett

This 5 year old Roan Horse put up three nice wins last season which include a G2 trip to the winners circle back in August in the Dell Web Mile. He closed nicely from just off the lead to win by ¼ length at the wire. His last outing came on 11/24/2019 in Kentucky where he traveled 9 furlongs in the G3, The Little River Band Stakes. He faded after the third call and did not fire against the front runners and showed up 8th in that race. His owner has contracted the services of jockey, F Gossett who is a local favorite jock here in California. The pair should get some action at the betting window as the fans anticipate as to if this horse can travel a little added distance with success.

Post Position: 5

Horse/Odds: Zeus Lightning 7/2
Sire: Scratch Bred (POINT OF ENTRY x SADLER'S WELLS x PIVOTAL)
Owner: 57away
Jockey: N Chance

This 6 year old Bay Gelding has found his way to the boards five times in seven starts during the 2019 season. He picked up two wins in those races with his last trip to the winners circle being back in June. His last outing he put up good effort in South Africa on 11/23/2019 going a distance of 10 furlongs in the G1, Jolly Summer Cup. He crossed the wire in 2nd that day. He makes the long travel from South Africa to get to this race and we will have to wait and see if that shows any negative effects. His owner picks up jockey, N Chance from Idaho to take the ride up top for this race as they head out at post time to represent Universal Racing Club residency.

Post Position: 6

Horse/Odds: Horn And Ivory 6/1
Sire: Scratch Bred (SHAMARDAL x SADLER'S WELLS x SECRETARIAT)
Owner: plano
Jockey: C Orza

This 4 year old Bay Colt started out his 2019 with three straight wins in a row. He would not find his fourth trip to the winners circle again until July of last year when he picked up a nice G2 win in Virginia in The Colonial Derby. He had a nice season in 2019 but it ended on a downward note when he last ran in Hong Kong on 12/08/2019 in the G1, King Kong Cup where he showed up 6th at the wire and was 9 lengths back. He looks for redemption here in California as he makes a long travel to get here. This horse will have a very familiar rider up top in C Orza from New York coming in to take the mount. They will head to their post on Saturday representing the Bargain Bred Racing Series residency.

Post Position: 7

Horse/Odds: Andthatrockwashe 21/1
Sire: Scratch Bred (ROCK HARD TEN x STREET CRY x DUBAWI (IRE))
Owner: billeex
Jockey: R Hansen

This 4 year old Bay Colt is coming off back to back wins and found that the switch to the turf surface being kind to him in his ten starts in the 2019 season. He made four trips to the winners circle after switching over to run on the turf with his last outing coming on 12/16/2019 in Hong Kong in a Listed Stakes, the Hollywood Halo. He turned on the fire when being 5 lengths back at the third call and came charging to get the wire 1st by a ½ length. He makes the trip back here to California to make his first career start at the Graded level. He is taking a big jump in Class here and we will have to wait and see if local jockey, R Hansen can keep this horse in contention in his first Graded try. They will be headed out at post time to represent the GR Simters residency.

Post Position: 8

Horse/Odds: Yarnathon 14/1
Sire: Scratch Bred (SUNS OUT GUNS OUT x SINGSPIEL (IRE) x BUSTINO)
Owner: meguire2nd
Jockey: M Peters

This 5 year old Bay Horse found three trips to the winners circle in 2019. One of these wins came on 10/06/2019 in Kentucky at 12 furlongs in the G3, The Sick No More Stakes. His last trip to the track was met with great disappointment when he ran here in California on 12/07/2019 when he jumped up in Class to run 12 furlongs in the G1, The Los Angeles Turf Cup. He showed up way late at the wire in 12th and was over 20 lengths back when he failed to compete when starting out of gate 10 in that race. He will get the services of local jockey, M Peters that gets the call to take the ride and find that competitive spirit once again out of this horse. They will take to the track together representing the Blazing Saddles residency.

Post Position: 9

Horse/Odds: Always An Optimist 13/1
Sire: Lonhro
Owner: chorwon
Jockey: E Sharp

This 4 year old Bay Colt found himself on a fairly heavy race schedule in the 2019 season making eleven starts. He found three trips to the winner’s circle which included a win back in June in the G2, The Jefferson Davis Stakes in Kentucky. After that race he began to struggle and stepped back down in Class to the Allowance level in his last two outings. On his last trip to the track he ran here in California going 10 furlongs on 12/27/2019 in a $48,700 NW4L Allowance. He picked up the win in that race as he handily closed for 1 ½ length win over that field. He gets the service of a familiar jockey, E Sharp from Ohio who will once again take to the mount up top of this contender when they head to their post to represent the East-West Connection residency.

Post Position: 10

Horse/Odds: Chili Klaus 25/1
Sire: Deep Impact
Owner: golfteam7
Jockey: S Gutierrez

Although going off at 25/1 this 4 year old Brown Gelding could be a surprise at the betting window if his jockey, S Gutierrez from Mexico can get his horse to compete as he takes a big jump in Class. He tends to close late and he had a very nice 2019 season of which he never missed the boards in eight starts. He was also able to pick up three wins along the way, with his last win coming on 12/20/2019 in British Columbia in a Listed Stakes race, the Xtremely A Fan Turf Challenge. He crossed the wire 1st with a nice 111 speed to his credit. But the question is, can he bring that forward with him taking a big jump in Class in his first Graded racing attempt.

Post Position: 11

Horse/Odds: Climate Fever 19/1
Sire: Orfevre
Owner: amir1653
Jockey: S Crew

This 4 year old Bay Colt made six career starts in 2019 and found three wins and came in third in another. His only failure in hitting the boards came in his last race when he attempted to go 9 furlongs here in California on 11/10/2019 in the Don Quixote Turf Route which was a Listed Stakes. He crossed the wire in 4th and was 7 lengths back at the wire. This was this horse’s first attempt to go longer than 8 furlongs in his career. He is a late closer and I feel he should be able to go this 10 furlong distance? His owner has made the call to get local rookie jockey, S Crew to take the ride with his horse on Saturday when they head out to represent the Elite Racing Club residency.

Post Position: 12

Horse/Odds: Ryans Gold 10/1
Sire: Adelaide
Owner: shadeed99
Jockey: S Outaluck

This 4 year old Bay Colt found his way to the winner’s circle to get his picture taken three times in 2019. One of those wins was in Germany back in August when he closed nicely for a 1 length win in the G3, The Furstenberg Stakes at a distance of 10 furlongs and a nice 112 speed rating. His last trip to the track was not so kind to him when he ran 10 furlongs here in California on 11/23/2019 in the G2, the Los Angeles Derby. He faded back after the 3rd call when he failed to fire and showed up 6th and over 7 lengths back when he hit the wire. The call was placed to British Columbia to acquire the services of rookie jockey, S Outaluck to take to the irons with this horse when they saddle up to represent Universal Racing Club residency.

Post Position: 13

Horse/Odds: Bodysnatchers 19/1
Sire: Fastnet Rock
Owner: freeman
Jockey: W Kewmwa

This G3 winning 4 year old Bay Colt found that badge to add to his collection back in April of last year when he ran going 10 furlongs in The Jargon Stakes in Germany. He then made two fruitless attempts at the G1 level. He then stepped back down and ran an Allowance race where he picked up the win in October and followed that up with his most recent trip to the track in Tasmania in a 10 furlong Listed Stakes, the Tears Of A Clown Stakes where he closed up shop nicely with a 111 speed rating and a 2 ¾ length win. He is making a long trip to run here and will be looking to jump back up in Class to a level he has not shown up well in the past. He will be getting the services of jockey, W Kewmwa who is a top jockey from out of Arizona to take the ride with him. They will be heading out to their post representing the Midas residency.

Post Position: 14

Horse/Odds: Cecilator 21/1
Sire: Scratch Bred (MOTIVATOR x FANTASTIC LIGHT x MTOTO)
Owner: anothercrick1
Jockey: C Gerhke

This 4 year old Bay Gelding picked up two wins during his 2019 season. One of these wins was in a Listed Stakes back in June when he went 10.5 furlongs in the Coma Turf Route in Sweden. He took a jump forward in Class in his next outing which came on 08/11/2019 when he ran 10 furlongs in Deauville in the G2, The Guilaume Stakes. He grabbed the lead at the third call but could not hold off another horse that made a big late closing charge. He showed up 2nd when crossing the wire. He then came back to run in his last race of the 2019 season here in California running on 10/13/2019 at a distance of 9 furlongs in the G2, Cherry Limb Stakes. He failed to fire and compete in that race and crossed the wire in a disappointing 10th place. He looks for redemption and will once again have jockey, C Gerhke from Maryland in the saddle for the ride. They will be head out to the turf to their far outside post representing the Only Stayers residency.

Good luck to all owners and horses!

Skippy’s Watch List
Horn And Ivory: Has put up some good looking speed ratings lately that might get him there.
Zeus Lightning: He is coming off a 2nd place G1 finish. He could be game for this one.
Image Of War: Stepping down in distance may be what he needs to get back on the boards.

Tarton’s Long Shot
Cecilator: He might be a surprise in this one and at 21/1 I am going to give him a chance on some of my exotic tickets. I expect a slower pace in this race with no big front runners. This might get this prior G2 placing horse back on the boards.

Congregations everyone! Funny story is I tipped the winner, Chili Klaus in Tip A Horse. I got a message in my inbox that someone else tipped this horse and thus I had to pick something else (a dud) from my own stables. Gratz on the win. I did have confidence in this horse, but it did not work out for me. 🙂
