2010 Bluegrass Oaks

The 2010 Bluegrass Oaks features 20 outstanding sophomore fillies running for a history-making Grade I win. The stakes record is owned by Swift Kick; the filly ran the 9f distance in a stellar 1:47.3 in 2005. It will take a huge effort to eclipse that mark, but any filly here is capable of the feat.

Reporting for the Black Type Bugler are four veteran players: Silverny is a long-time Bugler staffer and trainer of such graded runners as Forty Rahys. Hawkz presents the view from Down Under and is wellknown for his exploits in the Bargain Bred Racing Series. Roxynken is the newest simmer on this panel and a devoted Bugler writer. Smokeglack campaigned the Eclipse-winning racemare Miesque’s Gold and assists the Bugler on major racedays.

Silverny: G1 SC Stomp (Equinics) winner. Graded win was at the six furlong distance, is G1 placed at eight and a half furlongs. Comes into this race off a poor finishing in the California Derby, however that was against colts, and many fillies can’t match strides with the boys, so you could theoretically toss that race out the window. Only wins on the lead, and there are too many closers in this race to let her get away too easily. Pass.
Hawkz: Had good form in 2yrold season and her trainer must have thought he was ready for this race when she won the California Oaks-G1 8.5f 96sp two starts ago. Failed to flatter against the boys last time when 14th California Derby — Derby Lock Prep-G1 9f . Back against the girls she should have a better chance although 9f might prove a problem.
Roxyken: Qwik N Shiloh put in an awful race when she tried to secure a derby spot in the California Derby Prep race finishing last way back. She likes to run on the lead and posted speeds of 96 in the California Oaks (G1) and South Carolina Stump finishing 2nd and 1st respectfully.   The California Derby Prep race was against the boys. She’s back with the girls and I wouldn’t rule her totally out of the picture, which could reward at 28-1!
Smokeglack: Winner of the 6f Gr1 Equinics race, Qwik N Shiloh will put her cards out on the table early. The class speed of the race in which she will try to wire the field. Gave Hard Indian all she can handle in the California Oaks. The 9f today will hurt her possibly much more than others, but if she can settle pace and get big lead turning for home, she will put it all on the line through the stretch. Probable pace setter for Vett and the Oaks field. Predicted 4-9 finish.

Silverny: G3 winner of the Dubai 1000 Guineas. Has not won since that win, after said win she had a five win streak, and was looking to be a top contender in the Oaks. Since then though she has two sixth place finishes, undoubtedly trying to win on the lead, and being swallowed by the closers when she tires. She tries to sprint clear and hold off the closers, but as of late has been unsuccessful. Pass.
Hawkz: Very lightly raced filly who has raced well in stakes company and wonThe Dubai 1000 Guineas-G3 8f 99sp has struggled in last to starts since then by a sire of some top dirt runners TALE OF THE CAT. Would need to run her best race to figure here.
Roxyken: Ghost Stories will want to lead and her best race was run on the slop three races back.   She’d probably be one of my picks on an off-track, but the conditions will be fast and she was beat out by several others in the Louisiana Oaks two races ago.   Looks doubtful to me.
Smokeglack: Winner of the Gr3 Dubai 1000 Guineas comes here today with a poor prep performance in a NG stakes. She rattled off 5 straight career victories, starting with her maiden win, but hit a plateau in her last 2 starts.   Will most likely be sitting behind Qwik and Shiloh down the backside, and will try to make one big surge with 2f to go . Libit’s 2 nd starter in this race today.   Predicted 9-14 finish today.

Silverny: Grade 1 winner from the DCPD series, hasn’t won since then. Trainer lasthope has been trying everything possible to get a win out of her, trying the lead, trying closing, turf, off track, nothing seems to be helping. Has not had a triple digit speed figure. Would like more if in better form. Pass.
Hawkz: Dixiedotco Racing trained filly by top sire AWESOME AGAIN she won 4 racesat 2yrs including DPCD VIII Mother Story Handicap-G1 8f 92sp has been placed in graded races this year and must be place chance again here distance only question mark.
Roxyken: I expect that Captain Awesome will run this race somewhere just off the lead.   She has done well in the past, hitting the board in nearly every dirt start.   Her best speed rated race was in the slop.   I’m not sold that she will be the top dog in this race as her speeds have been in the low-to-mid 90’s lately on the dry track with others going better.   I’d take a pass on her, at least in this race.
Smokeglack: Dell Penn winner coming into the race off highest speed number of career. She will be one of the front-type stalkers in the race which will give her a good position throughout. Her biggest question here today is the 9f (although bred for it), and the collective class of the field. Needs to fire best shot today, which is always a possibility for Dixie . 4-8 predicted finish.

Silverny: Grade 1 placed in Amber Waves of Grain (Equinics). Allowance winner ran fourth in the Iool Oaks. Runs from the back, and seems to be begging for more distance, but cannot pick an allowance winner to run big in the Bluegrass Oaks. Pass.
Hawkz: CONGRATS filly who had top 2yrold season two starts this year have produced a 3rd in the Equinics Amber Wave of Grain G1 9F 95sp and 4th lool Oaks-G1 8.5f 98sp improving with every run and always runs on. Loves distance and now ready for big run.
Roxyken: An interesting tid-bit about this race…Almost half the entrants raced in the Lool Oaks (G1) including Brush With a Skunk. Brush finished forth albeit, behind several others in the race. Despite that, he made up the most lengths between the half and the finish.  I think he is one to keep an eye on.
Smokeglack: 8 start Congrats filly was a good closing 3 rd in Equnics 9f event. She will lead charge from the back with the deep closer gang. Should get desired pace up front and just can’t afford to spot the front pack group too much early in the race. If this filly is in good motion with 3f to go, she will be steaming late. Progressive speed numbers say she’s due for a big one for Skunkbarn .

Silverny: Grade 1 placed in the DPCD Mother Story. Multiple listed stakes winner. Has a triple digit speed figure, but tends to be very headstrong needing to be on or need the lead. She broke poorly in her last start, and was never in it. Facing similar competition today. Pass.
Hawkz: The Squirrel Empire trained filly by MINESHAFT she won The GOLD RIVERII(IRE) Challenge-Stk 8f 100sp first up this season. If she can handle jump in class and distance may prove a difficult customer to handle here.
Roxyken: Ignorify is a beautifully bred Mineshaft filly who has lots of spunk. She likes being near the front but has yet to win a graded event. Her top speed of 100 at a mile in a non-graded race shows she has ability, but she didn’t fare well in the Lool Oaks against many others in this field.   Unfortunately, that race speaks for itself and I don’t see her outrunning her foes this time.
Smokeglack: 2 time stakes winner and 3 rd place finisher of the Gr 1 Equinics at 8f, Ignorify will be in a good mid-pack position down the backside. She has been the 9 panels already and ran a good 2 nd to Diocese.   Consistent filly has hit the board in 9 out of 11 starts. She will get a big benefit today as her running style of mid-pack type puts her with not too many around her. Will get big class test here and needs to fire on all cylinders to get the job done for Squirrel. Predicted finish 9-14.

Silverny: Comes into the race off of a poor effort in the Iool Stakes. Gold did win the Los Vinegrette G1 earlier this year, which was her lone stakes win. Closer, but hasn’t shown great speed figures as of yet. That last race is a huge concern, she was never in the mix of things. Pass.
Hawkz: TOUCH GOLD filly who has been raced against most of these fillies with some success. Has been placed 3rd California Oaks-G1 8.5f 96sp and was a wonderful winner of Los Vinegrette Stakes-G1 8f 97sp looks a chance at longer odds. A closer she will be coming home late.
Roxyken: I like the race that Hawaiian Gold ran in the California Oaks, closing from 10 back to finish 3rd by 2. But her effort in the Lool Oaks leads to concern as she ran a flat 11 th despite having a top notch jockey aboard in the race. I expect to see improvement this time out.
Smokeglack: The winner of The Los Vinagrette comes here after possibly the worst performance of her life. The positive spin is that it is now behind her and she can get back to her improving form. Closes big and if she can put it all together for one day, she can roll late to win. Capable of firing a 102-105 today which may be enough to win it all. Silverny: Grade 2 winner of the Motherly Love. She has shown that she likes the 9f distance, winning a listed stake easily by 4. Another horse who tends to press the pace, but at least has shown the ability to hold going a distance, and even has a triple digit speed figure. Last race is a throw out, on a sloppy track, gets a fast track today. Like.
Hawkz: As befitting a race of this prestige this joint favourite is a 9/1 top odds if you like her. The second of the Lilbitfarm Stables runner in this she has wins in The Motherly Love-G2 7f 93sp as a 2yrold and at 3yrs The RUBY ROUNDTABLE Memorial-Stk 9f 96sp two starts ago. Always runs on and a strong finish would carry her into the finish.
Roxyken: Diocese didn’t care much for the slop in her last start but still put in a nice speed number. I can’t readily predict where she may be in the early going as she has a variety of styles from leading, to stalking, to closing from the back. Whatever way Jockey Darling takes her, she will be a factor to watch out for.
Smokeglack: Trainer Wayne Lukas (Lilbit) brings 3rd starter to the gate here today. A daughter of Pulpit, she is 7 for 10 lifetime. She has won at 9f already and has a good running style for this race. May very well be your leader turning for home and if she can kick clear like in most of her races, she’s very, very dangerous here today. A masterful training job with this one has her primed for this effort today. Predicted 4-9 finish.

Silverny: Iool G1 stakes winner, comes in off of that win. Back to back triple digit speed figures. Running style suggests that the distance will be suitable, loves 8.5 furlongs at least. Race three back concerns me though, it was uncharacteristically bad, hate to see something like that show up in the big show again. Like
Hawkz: One of Queensland’s favourite sons (He is really from Melbourne) Deyoto trains this filly by DISTORTED HUMOR from the G1 winning mare CAROL OF THE BELLS this filly has won 5 of 8 to date at 2yrs won the Mistaken Soda Identity Stakes-G3 8.5f 99sp and last time out beat a lot of these in the lool Oaks-G18.5f 102sp. A deep closer who should be dive bombing the leaders in the stretch.Good luck Rob cant wait to have a runner in one of these races one day must be a thrill.
Roxyken: Taylor’s Story has back-to-back wins in the Louisiana Oaks and the Lool Oaks, both with speeds of 102. She’s beat many of these already…some twice. Would be no surprise if she does it again.
Smokeglack: 5 for 8 lifetime filly comes here today after firing big in last 2. Has beat many in here already and if can duplicate either one of last 2, she can find the winners circle. Distance and running style fit well here today. Besides the possible bounce factor of her last two races (102 speed numbers back to back) she has much to like here today. Silverny: Grade 3 placed in the Buckeye Debutante. Multiple listed stakes winner. The furthest that she has won at has been a flat mile. Yet another pace presser, ran close in last graded effort but tired to fifth. Not the way I’d like to see a horse enter the Oaks. Pass.
Hawkz: BANDINI filly who has 8 wins so far a whopping 6 at 2yrs she has carried that on into her 3yrold season winning The TEQUILA SUNRISE Stakes 8f 96sp might just find some of these filly to tough here. Will race handy to the pace and that’s an advantage in big fields.
Roxyken: Bandito shows nice improvement of late in speed numbers. Her record on the dirt of 8-4-1 looks nice in 14 starts, however a vast majority of these are against small fields, causing a bit of distortion. Her last race was against a talented full field, finishing 5th.  My gut tells me to avoid her until she shows a few more races in larger fields.
Smokeglack: Has to win on name alone. Experienced 3 yr old filly with 14 career starts and 8 wins (13 ITM) tested graded company again and finished 5 th last time out. Ran best speed number to date in Fantasia, but would have to better that much more here today. The 9f won’t help this filly much today. Lightly raced filly, with just two starts this year, coming into the race off of a listed stakes win, with career best speed figure of 97. Versatile, can be near the pace or off of it. Gets six weeks off coming into the race, and distance doesn’t look to be a problem. Would like a little more graded experience, but could be coming into form at precise time. Like.

Hawkz: STORMY ATLANTIC filly who has really hit her straps at 3yrs last timeout had a huge win the Mellow Breeze Handicap-G2 8f 105sp in top form but will need luck from well back in field most of the way will need a clear passage in stretch.
Roxyken: Wow!! was my reaction when seeing Acid’s outing in the Mellow Breeze. She rallied from 12 back (and last) to win by over a stride with a speed of 105 in the slop…but can she run on the dry track? The answer is yes, as she ran a similar effort in the non-graded Happy Honeymoon with a speed of 99. All I can say is:  She is woman….watch out for her roar!
Smokeglack: Deep closing Stormy Atlantic filly ran huge one last out in the Gr2 Mellow Breeze in the off going for Cothill . Has shown if she’s going to do anything she’ll be in the front at third call. Bounced in her last race, or outclassed. If she was outclassed then, she’ll be outclassed now. Pass.
Hawkz: PULPIT filly who has won 4 races won Jersey Derby Queen-Stk 8.5f 101sp two starts ago. Two graded runs have seen her come up a little short of the markand she should be safely held here.
Roxyken: A nice run in the Jersey Derby Queen for Appealing, winning the non-grade race with a speed of 101. Problem is that Appealing hasn’t fared well in graded races, missing the board three times. Unfortunately, I don’t see this race being the “break-through” race.
Smokeglack: 3 yr old Pulpit daughter didn’t fire in Fantasia last out. She ran a nice 101 speed # In Jersey, but must find even more from that lifetime best. She will need to bounce back off of that poor showing last time out. Yet to run a triple digit speed figure. Pass.
Hawkz: Universal Stables the residency stable of the boss Jacklad trains this filly by HARD SPUN a million dollar winning filly she has won The Darley-G1 8.5f 92sp at 2yrs and has gone from strength to strength in her 3yrold year winning the California Oaks-G1 8.5f 98sp two starts ago had a rare bad race last timeout when 12th lool Oaks-G1 if you forgive her that run she has to be in this.
Roxyken: As winner of the California Oaks, Hard Indian beat a few others in this field with a respectful 98 speed. That was good enough to send her off as the favorite in the Lool Oaks where she caved in badly. She gets moderately used Jockey Lynch who has 11% win percentage.   Doesn’t add up well for me.
Smokeglack: #3 ranked filly threw in a clunker last out. Maybe just what the doctor ordered for this usually very consistent filly. Class tested and distance should be right on the edge for her. Silverny: G2 winner of the Fantasia Hcp. Super lightly run, with only five starts, three wins and two places. Last race was Fantasia, with a whopping 105 speed figure. However impressing the result of that race was, the entrants were not. None of those will be running in the Oaks today. Union Jack comes into the race with impressive form, but has not been truly tested as of yet, I’d say Possible.
Hawkz: Very lightly raced filly by A.P. INDY who has made great strides in 5 races winning 3 and placing 2nd twice last time out she won the Fantasia Handicap-G28.5f 105sp. A very exciting filly who could turn out to be one of the best for her age this season and beyond.
Roxyken: Hmmm…Union Jack Flyer…hmmm…She won her sole graded race, the Fantasia Handicap in a speed of 105. She beat 3 others in the race that performed poorly in comparison.   She’s a late closing A.P. Indy filly with only 5 races under her belt. I’d like to see a few more races under her belt to see if she’s the real thing, but her breeding does point that way. I’d keep an eye on her, I think she can pull off a surprise here.

Silverny: Maiden winner, G1 placed in the Frickazee. Has not won since May of last year, gets into Oaks due to two of the top twenty fillies being Derby bound, and a couple of graded placings. Comes into the race of back to back bad runs, once against the colts and once against the fillies. Looks to be a pacesetter, which is another reason I don’t prefer her. Pass.
Hawkz: JOHAR filly with only one win so far but has been placed in top graded company including The Sell The Queen-G2 9f 86sp at 2yrs and 2nd The GOLD RIVERII(IRE) Challenge-Stk 8f 99sp three starts back will need to reproduce that form to figure here.
Roxyken: Can a horse that has one win in 13 starts win the Oaks? Pejorative has that record and will give it a shot. She hit a speed of 99 back in February, but hasn’t come that close to it since.   She’ll be out there early but I don’t see her pulling off the upset.
Smokeglack: Solid performing 2 yr old has not carried it over to her 3 yr old season. Comes into today with 2 dismal efforts in last two. Possibly thrown way off form with Fl Derby entry, and didn’t run well in Lool Oaks subsequent to that. Positive side is she is one of few that has run 9f before and ran fairly well in it. Tough spot here today to ask a horse to regain confidence, but Ted brings her here today to try make it possible. 9-14 predicted finish.

Silverny: Winner of two listed stakes, third in the Iool Oaks. Coming into this race off of a hard fought third in the Iool Oaks where she made a premature move and faded to third. However that third makes her eligible to run today. Does her best running on the lead, but in her most recent stakes tries she’s either not had enough speed to get there or maybe the trainer has asked the jock to change her style. Either way she’s coming into the race slightly off form. Has a triple digit speed figure, winning a listed stake this year by running just off the pacesetter. Has been in the money 10 of 13 starts, winning 6, but something tells me to Pass.
Hawkz: Lilbitfarm Stables third runner this one by EDDINGTON she has 6 wins so far including The EXBOURNE’S ASIA Special-Stk 8.5f 100sp and The LAKEHOUSE Stakes 98sp 8f. Last time out ran 3rd the lool Oaks-G1 8.5f 98sp another filly who adds to the puzzle when trying to pick the winner.
Roxyken: In the Lool Oaks, Epsilon Cat put in a game effort, finishing 3rd behind two others in this race.   A 6 th in the California Oaks put her behind 3 others running in this race. I believe she’ll need to bring her best game to overtake her foes.
Smokeglack: Consistent little filly like her real life father was. No graded wins yet, but has 2 show spots in Gr 1’s. Don’t think the ½ furlong more today helps an awful lot, but consistency makes up for some of that. Expect she and Captain Awesome to be the first to take shots at the leaders around the 3f left marker. Needs a well timed run for Libit and a best career run to date to get it done today. Predicted 9-14 finish.

Smokeglack’s Top 3:

CK Blurred Cat – BB winner has so much to like today. Class, distance and spotting of races all serve her well today. Will be charging hard at the top of the stretch.
Hard Indian – BB runner-up tries to turn the table on top choice. Love the fact she got poor race out of the way in last. Consistent graded filly will try to out foot CK to the wire. May get the wrong end of the photo.
Taylor’s Story – Would have no problem putting in top spot if not for huge back to back runs. If she has still has some in her reserve tank, and runsanything back to last two, capable of beating the top 2.
