IS TODAY THE DAY FOR AUCTION THIS DAY?
Picturesque Puerto Rico plays host to the running of the 2010 South Bronx Stakes Grade III this Saturday. The race is open to all horses 3yo and the dirt course looks as though it will come up fast this week for the seven furlong battle. A quality field of nine runners have made the trip to the South American venue so lets see how they shape up.
1 – AUCTION THIS DAY(KY) – escena – 6/1 – This up and comer has a formline that resembles a picket fence with four wins on the trot. He has the imposing career record of 5 wins from 8 starts including a stakes win last start at this distance where he produced a SP# of 99. The cleverly named son of Action This Day is in this with a great show.
2 – SLY BAILEY(TUR) – cricketer – 7/1 – Won his second stakes race in succession last time out when absolutely blowing them away over 6 furlongs to produce a speed figure of 102. The front running son of Mujtahid has won 4 of his last 5 starts looks all quality with the only question mark here being the step up to 7 furlongs and whether he will run it out. That is the main point for investors to speculate and will be a point of interest come race day.
3 – ANY GIVEN CAT(KY) – invasorstc – 4/1 – Introducing the #9 ranked horse in dirt sprinting for 3yo’s who is a very experienced campaigner at the top level. Finished sixth over 6 furlongs last start but was only beaten two and a half lengths at Grade I level. Prior to that he was placed at Grade III level and won a stakes race, both also over 6 furlongs. He has won at the distance and could produce enough here to be right up there again.
4 – DANTESCAN(KY) – martialis – 5/1 – A winner of only 2 races to date but also already a stakes winner over 6.5 furlongs. He broke his maiden over this trip and has also ran a nice second at stakes level over it as well. A son of Empire Maker who likes to sit near the tail and fly home. He meets plenty of good ones here but definitely has an element of class about him and cannot be discounted.
5 – DICKINSON(KY) – caveat – 6/1 – Has won two of his last three races, both at stakes level over 6 furlongs. He also managed a stakes placing at this distance in between those two runs. Another who likes to get back in the running and finish with a withering burst. This son of Eddington does have good form over 6 furlongs but needs to translate that to 7 furlongs to win here.
6 – DEPUTY BIRD(KY) – varsity2 – 6/1 – Makes his 7 furlong debut today after running over a mile or more in recent times. A winner of 2 races who is yet to salute at stakes level. His best result has been a third over 8.5 furlongs in a Grade III race. Looks to have his work cut out for him here on paper but trainer varsity2 is an astute judge and would not run the horse if he didn’t have an inkling that it could do something special.
7 – EMERALD PRO(KY) – zwylde – 7/2 – Had won 3 races on end including his first run as a 3yo before 2 disappointing results in his last two outings which resulted in a ninth and an eleventh. A son of Cherokee Run, he has won 6 from 12 and earned over half a million dollars in prizemoney. His 2yo form was nothing short of stellar and trainer zwylde is hoping that we see a return to that form this week.
8 – HOWLING JUPITER(KY) – rycamkel – 10/1 – A son of Roman Ruler who was saluted in two of his four starts as a 2yo but is yet to win this year. He has been beaten soundly at his two starts over six furlongs and a mile. This race looks very tough for him and he may appreciate something a little easier.
9 – ANGRY YOUNG MAN(KY) – sdmf1 – 19/1 – A last start winner over a mile in allowance grade in his second run as a 3yo. He likes to race just off the pace and put pressure on the leaders as they swing for home. This son of Point Given is probably in a race that is a little harder than he would like here today but he does show glimpses of brilliance at times and for followers of him the 19/1 on offer is juicy. The roughie of the field, he could jag a placing if things go his way.
Many horses in this one could produce what is required to take out the $100,000 purse and an upset would not surprise. One thing is for sure, it is worth keeping an eye on the top 3 or 4 finishers here at their next start as this race could provide a good formline with it being so competitive.
