Welcome to Gothenberg for todays feature the Grade III Viking Memorial for fillies and mares over the 6f turf course. A good field of 13 go to post and lets take a look at each of the runners-

DANCE SEEKER (SEEKING THE GOLD x NORTHERN DANCER x BLUSHING GROOM(FR))

Bred to be a 10f runner at least she has been running very well in sprints for some time now. No recent wins but has three third places in Graded races at this trip or thereabouts. She is very consistant and will run around the 104 mark. That sets a good standard and she should be in the top five if not the top three.

JONESTOWN (SEEKING THE GOLD x SEATTLE DANCER x PLEASANT COLONY)

Another bred to get much further and probably also for dirt but she has put together a really consistant series of runs at sprint trips on the turf including a good 104 sp to get fourth in a Grade III latest. Again she can be relied upon to post around a 104 and that will also put her right up there in the firing line. Should be challenging at the finish and looks a cert for a top five if not better.

CAROLWOOD PACIFIC (ALDEBARAN x DIXIELAND BAND x COZZENE)

This ones a bit more speed bred but is another who would have looked more likre a dirt runner. She has run reasonably well in small allowance races but her best recent sp is only a 97. On the results she has achieved so far she looks to be up against it here running with some very good Graded racers. She will struggle and will be nearer the back than the front at the finish.

HARD KNOCKS(IRE) (HAWK WING (IRE) x ROYAL ACADEMY x SIR GAYLORD)

Bred to be at least a 10f runner but clearly doesn’t get that far although she has been looking to me as if a step up to a mile might see her in a better light. Her only recent win was in an allowance and that only gave up a 93 sp which is miles below what will be needed today. Might be better at a mile and will be bringing up the rear today.

IDOLATRIA(KY) (BUDDHA x ARAZI x TOPSIDER)

Bred to sprint and has already put up some really nice numbers so far this year. A stakes win over 7f with a 110 sp and a fourth in a Grade II (on soft going) over 6f with a 106 sp latest. She looks to running consistantly around that 106 mark or better and that reads very well in this race. May not leasd as usual but will be right up there and looks as though she’ll be hard to pass. I expect her to make the top three and at 10/1 on the morning line get some win/place/show bets down.

PLOY (EXPLOIT x LORD AT WAR(ARG) x BOLD RUCKUS)

Another bred to sprint she has been a bit inconsistant this year putting up four runs of 100 + and four which were ordinary at best. At her best as in her last race she could make the top five but another sub-par run and she’ll be at the back. I honerstly don’t know what to expect today but as she’s now run almost 50 races I don’t expect a win.

BEANSTALK(IRE) (GIANT’S CAUSEWAY (IRE) x NIJINSKY II x ROBERTO)

Bred to be a classic runner she has put together a strong series of runs which included a 111 sp over 7.5f two runs back. Most of her recent runs have been around 102-104 though and I think that 111 may have been down to the soft going. With the course being firm today I expect another 104 which will put her right in the top five. Anything better may see a win but I would be much stronger for that if the going was soft. Top five at least.

DOWN ON ME (MT. LIVERMORE x UNFUWAIN x SHARPEN UP(GB))

Bred to get at least a mile two of her best recent runs have been at 7.5f and she has been crying out for a step up to a mile at least. Her last run at this trip produced only a 92 in a stakes and that leaves her miles to find today. Up in trip in a stakes she would be a good bet but not tday. Nearer last than first.

NIGHT WITCH(KY) (PULPIT x UNFUWAIN x MR. PROSPECTOR)

Bred as a sprinter on balance and is one of the least experienced in the field but her last three runs have been excellent. Only one win in that sequence but that was with a 110 sp and she ran a 109 to get second over todays trip in a Grade II latest. That was on soft going but as she’s run a 110 on firm I don’t think the ground condition makes much difference to her. Looks llike there is still more to come from her and as she is happy with most types of races (leading or just off the pace paricularly) I expect her to run at least a 108. That would take a lot of beating today and for me she is nailed on for a top three and looks the likely winner.

DOWN IN THE VALLEY(KY) (ELUSIVE QUALITY x DEPUTY MINISTER x GILDED AGE)

Another who’s last three runs have been her best but only one was in a stakes and as she was closing over 6.5f I’m not sure she needs the drop in trip. She’s bred to get a mile and may struggle for speed today as she likes to sit near the back, especially early on. Has run well enough to warrant a good run today but I can’t see a win. Would like to see her at a mile though.

FRONTNINER(JPN) (FORTY NINER x BEAT HOLLOW (GB) x STORM CAT)

Mixture of turf and dirt in the breeding and she has put together a nice series of runs. Only one recent win and that was in a Grade II over 7.5f. She closed like a train over 6.5f in her last two and is surely now ready for a mile after fourteen runs. She clearly has class and will win more graded races but I think todays 6f may be too sharp and the front two or three will be too far out of reach for her late charge. She will still make the top fiv ethough and looks a real prospect.

MOGUER (E DUBAI x STORM CAT x HOIST THE FLAG)

Bred to get at least a mile and on turf or dirt and her last few runs have suggested that this will be too sharp for her today. Her last win was in a stakes over a mile and produced a 98 sp. Even that run would be nowhere near good enough today and I would like to see her try 9f even after fifty four races. Will not be winning today.

OBFUSCATION (PULPIT x PRIVATE ACCOUNT x MILL REEF)

Another bred to spint and on turf too, she is another rwho’s a bit inconsistant. She’s mixed low 100 sp’s with high nineties and although she’s decent at her best she looks short of the class required to win this. She likes to lead but will find that tough today with some real speedsters in this line up. I expect a decent 100 type run today but that probably won’t be good enough to get in the money.

OVERALL

A lot of nice, closely matched fillies and mares in here today but for me NIGHT WITCH looks as though she has more to come and will take all the beating.
