Claims and Stakes in NY

Claims and Stakes in NY

Surf and Turf!

A quick preview of the races for this week.  There is a high priced ($100k) claims race (The NY Sire Challenge).  The stakes this week is the  The KEN’S WELL Special.   This week is also the start of the NY Sires Series – Race 16.  There are A LOT of filly races this week.

Race 1

Allowance
A mile and one sixteenth
Good Turf
$28,300
Fillies and mares, 4 years old and up, Non-Winners of ONE except MaidenClaiming, Optional or Starter

The favorite – MINER MISTRESS – looks good in this crowd.  Pair up with SUNDAY BEST for an exacta box.

Race 2

Allowance
Six furlongs
Good Dirt
$28,300
All horses, 3 years old, Non-Winners of ONE except Maiden, Claiming, Optional or Starter

The favorite JORATTYBURGH(KY) should be challenged by both CLUTCH(JPN) (previous performances in good dirt and has a good jockey) and ANIVERSARIO(KY).  Box’em.

Race 3

Maiden Special Weight
Four and one half furlongs
Good Dirt
$41,000
Fillies and mares, 2 years old

The best jockey picked DIVIDE BY THREE(KY) – that’s good enough for me.  SILENT SUMMER(KY) is the best of the 3 horses in this race that have a race under their belt (all three ran their first race in NY) and has a good chance to show up.

Race 4

Allowance
One mile
Good Dirt
$28,300
Fillies and mares, 3 years old and up, Non-Winners of ONE within the last 9 months

The best by far in the bunch is LURED INTO A GULCH.   A reasonable bet for slightly longer odds can be had with STORM OF MISSILES.

Race 5

Allowance
A mile and three eighths
Good Dirt
$49,200
All horses, 4 year olds

A field full of 100’s… box SOCKEYE(KY) and TRAP DOOR(KY)

Race 6

Maiden Special Weight
Five and one half furlongs
Good Turf
$41,000
Fillies and mares, 2 years old

The favorite is RADIANT LIGHT(AUS).  A 30-1 longshot – RATTYKIRK(ENG) (a Rainbow Quest Dam-sire product) had a bad first trip and picked up a good jockey.  Box’em.

Race 7

Allowance
A mile and one eighth
Good Turf
$49,200
Fillies and mares, 3 years old

A 4 horse field.  The favorite should be a lock – INDY GHOST HUNTER(KY).   Possible challenger BARRINGER CRATER(KY) has been improving in recent runs and gets the sponsor bonus.

Race 8

Allowance
A mile and one sixteenth
Good Dirt
$40,500
Fillies and mares, 3 years old, Non-Winners of TWO except Maiden, Claiming, Optional or Starter

Another small field, the favorite looks good – TOPSY TURVY(KY).  SPIRITOFTHESKY(KY) had a good reaction to off track conditions and is the only horse in this field that has not won in those conditions.  This should be an interesting race to watch.

Race 9

Starter Allowance  ($10,000)
Four and one half furlongs
Good Dirt
$20,200
All horses, 5 years old and up

TROJAN ATTACK is a favorite with condition success.  GENERAL STEEL(GB) is a nice 14-1 bet with a good history in poor conditions.  I like GENERAL STEEL(GB) to win, but boxing the field might catch you some cash.

Race 10

The KEN’S WELL Special
Stakes
A mile and one eighth
Good Dirt
$80,000
All horses, 4 years old and up

A small field for the stakes race has some nice horses.  Most have experience in poor conditions.  Unless there is a surprise, one of the following should claim the victory:  DAN’S EMPIRE, NOWTHEYWILLFEARU, RANDY KRANSKY.  If I have to pick one (and I do), I would pick RANDY KRANSKY who has had three great performances in a row in the muck.

Race 11

Allowance
A mile and one sixteenth
Good Turf
$40,500
Fillies and mares, 4 year olds, Non-Winners of ONE except Maiden, Claiming, Optional or Starter

Favorite THOTHMES III(KY) has a decent shot at taking the win (with the sponsor bonus), but I like PORCELAIN PORPOISE’s recent performance in yielding turf to snatch victory by a nose from way back.  This will be PORCELAIN PORPOISE’s first race on the dirt.

Race 12

Maiden Special Weight
Six furlongs
Good Dirt
$41,000
Fillies and mares, 2 years old

More than half of this full field has experience.  RIVA BOBBI(KY) has the speed, but can she get dirty?  TRASH MOUNTAIN(TUR) has placed well in similar conditions – can she do it again?  PLAYING THE FIELD(SAF) kicked it up a notch to place in her last race – how will she react to the poor conditions?  WHIRO(KY) is an A.P. Indy/Storm Cat product that is the favorite and gets the sponsor bonus.  As with most 2yo races, there are nothing but questions, but Winter Is Coming, so box WHIRO(KY) with (34-1) TRASH MOUNTAIN(TUR).

Race 13

Allowance
A mile and one quarter
Good Dirt
$40,500
Fillies and mares, 4 year olds, Non-Winners of FOUR Lifetime

A small field and the favorite gets the sponsor bonus, MEIN TEIL(KY) is lightly raced and had a great recent performance in the muck.   There doesn’t seem to be a lot of bang for the buck, but this race definitely seems like a lock.  Boxing with SOUL TRAP(KY) might get you a little extra bang.

Race 14

Allowance
Six furlongs
Good Turf
$40,500
All horses, 3 years old, Restricted to horses whose CPU value is 400 or less and AT LEAST 5 races previously run

The favorite FIVE TICKETS(KY) has never run on turf and DANCEBYMOONLIGHT(JPN) had a good trip on good turf as a 2yo.  Let’s put a couple of bucks to win on 13-1 DANCEBYMOONLIGHT(JPN).

Race 15

NY Sire Challenge
Maiden Claiming  ($100,000)
Six furlongs
Good Dirt
$50,000
All horses, 3 years old

An extra large field with 18 horses.  The favorite KINGDOM OF PEACE(FL) has the best rider and a good trip in poor conditions.  Not sure if it is worth boxing with the field – maybe half the field?

Race 16

NY Sire Series (apply on forum) — Owner Restricted
Maiden Special Weight
Six furlongs
Good Dirt
$50,000
All horses, 3 years old — RESTRICTED TO PARTICULAR OWNERS

The first restricted race in the NY Sires Series.  All of the 17 horses in this race have a NY sire.  Of the 4 horses with experience in this race MARLINA(NY) would have been your best bet, but with only 2 weeks rest it might be too soon to put in a good effort.  The favorites are GOLDEN RATTLE(NY) and THIS IS FUN(NY).  The top two horses in this race will gain entry into the NY Sire Series Showdown 2008 on 7/5.  Pick’em.
