Huge and Talented Field in G1 Warsaw Mile!
The Warsaw Mile Stakes
Grade I
One Mile on the Firm Turf Course
$500,000
Fillies and mares, 3 years old
Stakes record – Inagural
So after a long flight from Europe and the Alpine Turf Club, I get to Alabama and think that I will have a nice little one mile Grade I to write up. I start to move around the stables and looking up some of the horses and I begin to think that there are an awful lot of “also eligible” entries hanging around. I get a copy of the DRF and lo and behold, there are SEVENTEEN fillies entered into this race. Where did they all come from? It looks like it’s going to be a wild race kind of like the sale day after Thanksgiving with everyone jostling for position. It’s going to take everything that these jockeys and trainer have to beat sixteen other horses as there can still only be one winner. According to the Morning Line, most of the favorites are parked outside in the temporary gate so that should also keep things interesting. These are still very young ladies but there is a ton of talent in this field and I wouldn’t be surprised to see some awards won at the end of the year by one from this crew. This could take a while, so let’s take a look:
1 – TIRED WINGS II(KY) ODDS OWNER WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED EARNINGS RANK 14/1 Kaif014 12.5% B.Shoe 30 – 4 – 1 – 2 – 13% 88.76 $70,980 243
(CASTLEDALE (IRE) x IN THE WINGS(GB) x GONE WEST out of MS. BURGLAR) From the name of this filly it looks like we are looking at a sequel to last years award winning horse from trainer Kaif and the Kaif Stables. When you look at that undefeated record in three races you have to begin to wonder if it won’t be so. She has already won two Stakes races easily and it appears that she was breezing at the wire so you can’t give too much credence to those lower SPFs in those races. She loves the lead, has a solid jockey up in Shoe and has the inside post with this big field. I think this looks like a good time to put some money on this longshot.
| 2 – MOLINERA(ENG) | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | EARNINGS | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 14/1 | Triska | 18.4% | S.Thornton | 49 – 2 – 2 – 10 – 4% | 89.60 | $299,240 | 103 |
(TIGER HILL (IRE) x FUSAICHI PEGASUS x STORM CAT out of ABADIA DA COVA) Here is another filly that’s getting no love from the Morning Line yet looks imposing. She has four Stakes wins and has won nearly half of her races. She finished within two lengths at last years World Cup as well. The only knock is that most of her races have been shorter than this although her best SPF of 89 was at a mile and a sixteenth. It’s a bit of a worry for trainer Triska and the Rafa Stables that jockey Thornton has been stone cold this year. She is a stalker that may benefit from the inside post too.
| 3 – TEST MY PATIENCE(AUS) | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | EARNINGS | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 17/1 | NoBiz | 14.7% | W.Stowe | 20 – 0 – 4 – 2 – 0% | 85.07 | $99,460 | 91 |
(TESTA ROSSA (AUS) x BROKEN VOW x QUIET AMERICAN) I don’t know if this filly’s name is telling or not as trainer NoBiz and the Shamrock Stables have been rewarded at most distances and surfaces with success. She can’t seem to get a break with rain and such but looks to be still improving. The trainer’s patience may be tested more by jockey Stowe who will be holding the reins but still looking for his first win of the season. That may not be a break for this lady either.
| 4 – LEARAWI(ENG) | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | EARNINGS | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 14/1 | Zepelinz | 6.6% | S.Holman | 26 – 4 – 1 – 2 – 15% | 88.11 | $ 351,950 | 31 |
( DUBAWI (IRE) x LEAR FAN x NEVER BEND) This is the winner of last years juvy turf World Cup GI race and has another Stakes win on her resume in only five races. She tried another GI last time out at a mile though and finished closer to the back than the front. Trainer Zepelinz and B4rca Stables have to be wondering if this girl is going to be a sprint specialist and this race could be telling. Fortunately they have Holman in the leather and he has been more than solid this year. He knows how to pace these youngsters and could help save something for the stretch run. She has raced from the front and behind so that could have a bearing here as well.
| 5 – NIEDERMANIA(KY) | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | EARNINGS | RANK |

| 11/1 | LastFarm | 14.8% | M.Cisco | 22 – 4 – 2 – 4 – 18% | 91.93 | $ 137,550 | 23 |
( COZZENE x SADLER’S WELLS x GONE WEST out of GOIN’ TO THE WELL) After starting off with four wins in a row, including three Stakes wins, this beautiful cream colored filly seems to have backed up just a bit her last two races. Trainer LastFarm and the LeeSnyder Stables have to figure if this is just a bump in the road or if both of those races which were as a three year old point to the fact that her best racing was in her two year old campaign. She likes this distance and has one of the hottest jocks riding in Cisco. The Cisco kid already has four wins in only 22 races this year and has been on the board in nearly half of those races. This would be a good race to kick start her back in the right direction again.
| 6 – BLUEGRASS RACER(KY) | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | EARNINGS | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 16/1 | JMSStable | 7.1% | A.Timpson | 69 – 5 – 4 – 11 – 7% | 88.35 | $163,365 | 36 |
( BLUEGRASS CAT x NIJINSKY II x ROBERTO) After a promising start with a Graded win and an entry into last years Breeders Bowl, this filly has really fallen on hard times, struggling to finish sixth in a couple of Gradeds and a disasterouls eleventh place finish last time out. Trainer JMSStable and the Baggio Stables are trying to right the ship here but have to wonder if she doesn’t need to go back to overnight Stakes to get it together. Speaking of that, jockey Timpson needs to do the same as he is having one of his worst years in his twenty on the track and there may be some slippage there as well.
| 7 – PAULA CREAMER(JPN) | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | EARNINGS | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 13/1 | TuffGuy | 16.4% | M.Turk | 23 – 3 – 1 – 1 – 13% | 93.09 | $62,355 | 299 |
( STRAVINSKY x A.P. INDY x FURIOUSLY out of FORTY GRAND) This will be the very first Stakes race for this big brown girl and you have to admire the patience of trainer TuffGuy and the Team Doza Racing Stables. Most would have thrown her into Stakes previously with her gaudy allowance record. She has four wins and three second in her seven turf races to date and a couple of nice SPFs. She seems to like the distance and could surprise a few folks here. She is in the capable hands of jockey Turk who has been solid all year. Watch out for this crew.
| 8 – DEEP DREAMS(JPN) | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | EARNINGS | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10/1 | Oberon | 10.7% | R.Pollard | 132 – 29 – 29 – 18 – 22% | 93.71 | $ 357,160 | 7 |
( DEEP IMPACT x HIGH CHAPARRAL (IRE) x DANCE BRIGHTLY out of DREAM DANCER) Another really solid filly here for trainer Oberon and the Tequila Mockingbird Stables. She is a former Grade I winner and has never finished worse than second in her six turf races. That includes a total of five Stakes races with only the GI win. She has looked really quick as a three year old with just a bit of fade at the end but both of those races were a little longer than this and it might be a great place for her. She has the tracks hottest jockey in the irons in Pollard and she could prove to ruin the plans of a couple of the favorites in this race.
| 9 – MAD STAR(KY) | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | EARNINGS | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 21/1 | GrayWolf5 | 11.2% | B.Toliver | 19 – 1 – 4 – 3 – 5% | 87.78 | $ 60,677 | 165 |
( DON’T GET MAD x STAR TRACE x SPEAK out of T.V.STAR) In her last race, this filly jumped out to the lead and held on the entire race in an Allowance. It appears that she will have to do the same thing here but it will be much tougher against this crew. Trainer GrayWolf5 and the Wolf’s Den Stables are known for shocking the world on occasion but it is going to take everything that jockey Toliver has in his bag of tricks to bring this win to fruition.
| 10 – STORM PUPPY(ENG) | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | EARNINGS | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20/1 | Amandas | 18.9% | M.Ross | 54 – 6 – 4 – 5 – 11% | 80.13 | $ 158,360 | 67 |
( PIVOTAL(GB) x STORM CAT x FAPPIANO out of STORM DOG) Another patient team here in Sim favorite SnowChief and trainer Amandas. This nicely bred chestnut filly had a streak of five wins in a row including a Stakes victory in the Queen Key Memorial yet this will be the first Graded entry for the filly. She is getting no love from the Morning Line but could definitely be a player. Jockey Ross is holding the reins and is having a very nice year. He would like nothing more that to bring this longshot home with a win. I believe that is a definite possibility.
| 11 – GREEN OASIS(KY) | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | EARNINGS | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 14/1 | Michap | 10.2% | E.Fricke | 19 – 0 – 2 – 1 – 0% | 92.33 | $ 93,860 | 66 |
( DEHERE x GREEN DESERT x SEEKING THE GOLD) This brown filly with the impressive pedigree has really been coming on strong the past couple of outing. Trainer Michap and the JayJay Stables have to be excited about the prospects of this young lady. This will be her first Stakes outing of any kind but she looks to be maturing nicely and had a 90+ SPF in her last win. This could be a good spot for her although I am a bit disappointed in the jockey choice as Fricke has seemed to have problems just holding on as opposed to guiding youngster this year and is still looking for his first win of the year. That could be enough to keep this talented young filly from winning.
| 12 – KUCHIKI(IRE) | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | EARNINGS | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 17/1 | Orosto | 11.3% | G.Blinn | 40 – 2 – 1 – 2 – 5% | 96.02 | $ 105,815 | 175 |
( HIGH CHAPARRAL (IRE) x AWESOME AGAIN x COZZENE out of RENZOKUKEN) This turf bred lady really seemed to lose her focus after stumbling in last years World Cup Juvy Mile. Give trainer Orosto of the Ace Stables credit for righting the ship last time out with a sizzling 96 SPF and a just miss third place finish in the SAWDUST HANDICAP Stakes. It will be interesting to see if she will be able to continue back on track here, especially with the disappointing season of jockey Blinn who is in the leather. A tough filly to handicap at this point but I am definitely rooting for her to continue her look from the last outing.
| 13 – THE DARK MARK(IRE) | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | EARNINGS | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7/1 | SunShine87 | 15.8% | E.Sharp | 144 – 31 – 27 – 17 – 22 % | 92.50 | $ 99,570 | 73 |
( MONTJEU (IRE) x SHARPEN UP(GB) x GREY DAWN II)) The only “Dark Mark” on this filly’s light resume is a second place finish two back. She has won her other three races including THE FULL A.P. HANDICAP Stakes last time out. She has two straight plus 90 SPFs and looks like she has the talent to go far this year for trainer SunShine87 and Lenny’s Evil Empire Stables. He always seems to lay on the cautious side with his young horses and this might be the next one that takes the three year old campaign by storm. Sharp is in the irons and he has been red hot this year. A formidable team that is parked way outside. If she can get near the leaders, her stalking style may carry the day.
| 14 – TRUE CHANT(KY) | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | EARNINGS | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10/1 | TGI | 9.1% | M.McKyer | 29 – 4 – 2 – 3 – 14 % | 98.00 | $ 189,480 | 95 |
(WAR CHANT x MISWAKI x SEATTLE SLEW out of TRUE SLEW AGAIN) Trainer and owner TGI has to wonder what it will take to get this filly over the top. She has run really quick SPFs throughout her career but only has one Stakes win in eight outing to show for it. She may need a little more distance to stretch it out as she never seems to have enough time to catch the leaders. Jockey McKyer may have to nudge her a bit earlier to see if he can get her to show her stuff and catch them at the wire. She looks to have the talent but needs to focus a bit more to start getting the wins.
| 15 – SINGLE WHITE PAT(KY) | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | EARNINGS | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8/1 | Casino | 14.5% | C.Riddle | 123 – 11 – 16 – 10 – 9% | 90.32 | $ 205,370 | 14 |
( GONE WEST x DEPUTY MINISTER x DANZIG out of THREE D FX) Since her second race, this well bred filly has shown continued and tremendous improvement each time out. Trainer and owner Casino has really brought her along nicely and this would be a perfect time to jump to the next level. For some reason her improvement and nice SPFs hasn’t translated into a bunch of wins but it just seems to be a matter of time when she finds how nice it is to trot into the winners circle and begin to do it consistently. Riddle is up and has been solid if unspectacular this year. He has a nice horse under him and would like to improve on his season as well. Perhaps this is where is all comes together.
| 16 – TORCIO(JPN) | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | EARNINGS | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8/1 | Lawdro2 | 24.7% | A.Lee | 47 – 7 – 4 – 7 – 15% | 92.01 | $ 325,065 | 44 |
( AGNES DIGITAL x GREEN DANCER x TORSION) Five Stakes wins and eight of eleven wins makes this filly a dangerous challenger in this race. She has never finished lower than second and trainer and owner Lawdro has to hate it that she is parked this far out in the provisional gate. She loves to jump to the front and it will be a long way to the rail. Hopefully the magic hands of jockey Lee can weave her there slowly and not take too much energy because this crew has to be one of the teams to watch in this race. She seems to like the distance and this could really put her on the three year old map with a win.
| 17 – GYPSY TEARS(ENG) | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | EARNINGS | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 18/1 | Ziklag2 | 14.0% | V.Underhill | 23 – 0 – 3 – 3 – 0% | 86.81 | $ 94,570 | 174 |
(PIVOTAL(GB) x RAHY x KRIS(GB) out of RAHYMANIAN RHAPSODY) Parked so far on the outside that jockey Underhill will need his cell phone to know when the race has started, this entry for trainer Ziklag2 and the RVD stables has never finished off of the board but will have to really up the ante here to continue that streak. It won’t help that jockey Underhill is looking for his first win of the season either. She hasn’t shown the speed to compete with this field but sometimes all it takes is your first Graded race to bring that speed out.
Morning Line = 13-15-16-8-5
Paz Picks = 13-7-1-16-15
These are still really young ladies and it is really tough to try and figure out who will come out on top. I like TORCIO to finish fourth although she may finish much better. I have a couple of long shots for third and second. I think it is time to show what she can do for TIRED WINGS II and I think she will hit the board. PAULA CREAMER is in her very first Stakes race and you just never know how that will affect her but I think that she has the talent. Although she is lightly raced as well, I think it is time for THE DARK MARK to leave her mark on the three year old group with a win here.
Good luck to all runners!
