Sensible In The Shananie’s Swamps

On the clear Florida afternoon the four fillies that were scheduled to run in this years listed Shananie’s Swamps Handicap made their way through the post parade and to the starting gate that would be the beginning of the mile and one sixteenth race over the dirt. I Break The Rules. owned and trained by court4, was having a difficult time of it in the starting gate and was not settling down. The other horses quickly loaded into the remaining three posts and the tense waiting began.

When the bell sounded and the gates clanged open it was mcsheen trained Enforcer, the Florida-bred, that went out to a very early and quick three length lead over the early line favorite of the race, Sensible who is owned by pleasanttap. Five and one-fourth lengths back in third at this time was I Break The Rules who was struggling earlier in the start gate. Seven lengths behind the leader and trailing the field early on was the xanderman filly, Graupoint.

Enforcer lengthened her lead over the favorite Sensible to four and a half lengths with Sensible easing back and biding her time until the stretch. I Break The Rules was still in third but was dropping back in lengths after the two front runners. Graupoint continued to trail the field, now some eleven and one-fourth lengths off the pace.

When the field came into the turn Enforcer still had the lead but it had begun to shrink to just two and one-fourth lengths now with Sensible beginning to speed things up on the inside towards the rail. I Break The Rules was still managing to cling onto third, but it was gradually slipping away with Graupoint gaining with every stride.

The four fillies came down to the wire and the pre-race favorite Sensible, owned and trained by pleasanttap had made her move now and was flying down on the rail, passing by the pacesetter Enforcer to take the win by two and one-fourth lengths under jockey V. Gardner with a lifetime best speed figure of one hundred four in 1:42 1/5. Finishing two and one-fourth lengths back in second was pacesetter Enforcer with Graupoint rallying late for third.
