Its Del Penn Champions Day this Saturday, one of the most prestigious days racing of the entire year, and the last major racing of 2007. We are in Maryland to cover the championship race for 2 yo fillies and mares on the lawn over the sprint distance of 6 furlongs. A field of 13 hopefuls line up to take their shot at the half a million dollar purse in the Grade 1
1) PAULS BOUTIQUE crawf68 114201 B J Hobert 10/1
2 yo filly
Kepinsky x Zabeel x Woodman
6 runs 3 wins 1 second $174500
Triple stakes winning turf sprinter has earned a rating of 32 in her division over the season. Looked good in the early part of her career when picking up 2 stakes wins, both over 6 furlongs turf and both with front running tactics, and was then highly tried in her next 3 (2 grade 1`s and a grade 3). Even though she finished 3rd in the grade 3, over 7 furlongs in Ireland she did not make the expected improvement. She failed to stay in the second of her Grade 1 attempts in the World Cup juvenile fillies mile, which persuaded her trainer to drop her back down to 6 in her last race. This proved to be a successful tactic as she responded with her best race to date, leading all the way in the Miss Pye Challenge in Texas to record an easy victory by 2 1/2 lengths and a new pb speed figure of 85. She could be dangerous with an uncontested lead.

Started her racing career with 2 runs on the dirt, winning the second one of these,a $23300 msw over 6 furlongs at New Hampshire. She led from trap to line that day to record a winning speed figure of 74. She may have well surprised her trainer next, for she was switched to turf next, and for one out of a sire that normally produces dirt winners she did really well to find improvement in her surface switch. She ran her first race on the lawn in yielding conditions in the 6 furlong Carson Heather Special stakes in Upper New York and once again this speedy type led from the gun and held on up the home straight by 1/4 length to win her first in stakes class and produce a pb speed figure of 77. She was upped a furlong in her last race to 7 furlongs and responded well in The Jenny and Tony Bonanza Stakes in Puerto Rico, building up a huge lead of 8 lengths by halfway before running out an easy 1 3/4 lengths winner, once again improving her speed to 79. Clearly an improver who is in great heart.it will be interesting to she how she goes back at 6 furlongs, and if she pings the lids may make that 11/1 quote seem a bit silly.

PATRONUS DREAM onemore 3131 R Clink 9/12 yo filly
Oasis Dream x Mr Prospector x King of Kings (old)
4 runs 2 wins 2 thirds $53500
Two runs on both surfaces have left her with a win and a third on each. Another speedy sort, she finished third on her debut in a 5.5 furlongs msw on the dirt in Washington, leading from the trap before being collared in the final furlong and finishing 3rd. Stepped up to 6 furlongs in a North California msw next and once again bowled along in the front, running the finish out of the opposition and winning by 1 1/4 lengths with a speed figure of 78. Switched surfaces next time up and contested a $30400 nw2l allowance on turf over 6 1/2 furlongs in Nevada. For the first time she was not able to get to the lead, but stayed handy and ran on into 3rd, beaten 1/4 length with a speed of 76. Dropped back to 5.5 furlongs on the turf next and tried stakes company for the first time in Texas. Although she could not lead again, she hung tough in 2nd before taking it up just after halfway and ran on, winning by 1 3/4 lengths with a pb speed of 80. This 6 furlongs trip should prove no problem here and with a bit of improvement you never know.

MISS MOORS parramatta 323033 C Culpepper 7/12 yo filly

10 runs 2 wins 2 seconds 4 thirds $148425
Very busy 2 yo who although showing some useful pieces of form has not managed to find the winners enclosure in her last half a dozen trips to the track. She was switched from turf to dirt lto to take part in a 7.5 stakes race in Louisiana and although she finished 3rd with a speed of 79, it never really worked out and she was slammed 11 1/2 lengths. She showed more the time before when racing in a 7 furlongs stakes race in Vermont, always handy and running on finishing 3rd beaten 3/4 length and her speed of 85 was her new lifetime best. All the same I would rather take my chance on one of the more unexposed ones who may not have ran up to Miss Moors 85 but may have much more scope for improvement.

With a strike rate of 75 % and an ITM rating of 100 %, it is unsurprising to see the bookmakers having this one at the head of the market. However, despite the impressive stats it may not be all plain sailing for this strapping filly as she tries to step back down in trip from a mile to this 6 furlongs. This winner of a grade 3 and 3 stakes races is rated 7th in her division, juvenile fillies turf sprint. To my eye she has looked most at home over 7 furlongs, at which she won a stakes race by 3 lengths with a speed of 87, so this 6 furlongs may still be in her radar. Another one that does it from the front so there is sure to be a cut throat pace upfront.

FLYING FINISH 2ndchoice 630046 T Dillon 46/12 yo filly
Alkaased x Mt Livermore x Seattle Slew
7 runs 1 win 1 third $77960
The winning of a restricted stakes race on her debut may have given her trainer the misguided opinion that Flying Finish is graded stakes class. She looks more like claiming class to me and whats more after her last effort, when she got stuffed in a a 6.5 furlongs stakes race in Utah, beaten 9 1/4 lengths with a pb speed of 65 it is unclear whether turf is even her best surface. Avoid at all costs.

SANCTIFIED qwikvett1 521323 Ta Johnstone 16/12 yo filly
Refuse to Bend x Event of the Year x Alydar
7 runs 1 win 3 seconds 2 thirds $50914
Big task ahead for a filly whose only win came in a maiden, although to be fair she is an improver. Last time out ran her best ever race when taking runners up spot in the 5.5 furlongs The Star of Gold Memorial stakes in Texas, coming from off the pace to go under by just 1/4 of a length. Her speed of 80 was her fastest ever, and with her getting an extra half a furlong today I suppose she has a slight squeak, It must be noted though that on all previous form she hasnt much of a chance,it is only on her latest that she has the slightest of squeaks.

Rahy x Danzig x Graustark
6 runs 4 wins 1 second $159450
Another that boasts an impressive strike rate of 75 %, this triple stakes winning filly must have a big shout here. Her only defeat in her last came in the juvenile fillies sprint race at the World Cup when she was stepping back down to todays trip of 6 furlongs. She was caught for a little bit of toe that day but still put up a respectable effort to finish in 6th place, just 2 1/4 lengths off the lead with a speed of 83. She has since went on to score a stakes win over 7.5 furlongs by a cosy couple of lengths with a new pb speed of 86. The drop back down in trip is probably not ideal as she looks to get seven so well, but I still expect her to put up a big run here and wouldnt be at all surprised if she went on to win this.

Cacique x Miswaki x Blushing Groom
7 runs 3 wins 2 seconds 1 third $83785
Out of a grade D mare this little filly is still seeking her first stakes win. She came oh so close last time out when finishing 2nd in a 5.5 furlong stakes in Connecticut, leading all the way but just unable to resist the run of the winner, beaten 1/4 length with a speed of 78. before that she finished third in a 6.5 furlong stakes in California, up near the pace before fading slightly beaten 4 3/4 lengths but setting a personal best speed of 83. She would have to be back to that form to get a mention here, but I feel the 7/1 odds are a bit skinny for me.

Oratorio x Spinning World x Spectacular Bid
5 runs 3 wins 1 second $221750
Things were going along swimmingly for this grade 2 and stakes winner until a combination of being out of her depth/ probably failing to stay resulted in a good hiding in the Breeders Bowl Juvenile turf fillies race over 8.5 furlongs. Before that she picked up her grade 2 over seven furlongs in Ireland, leading all the way before running out 1 3/4 lengths winner. Her speed of 79 was a career high. Interesting to see how she gets on dropped back down to six,and is yet another with early pace. Must improve to feature here, and really not for me.
11)
SILVER SPLENDOR squity 111192 N Prescott 7/12 yo filly
Badge of Silver x Danzig x Silver Slew
7 runs 4 wins 1 second 1 third $233470
There is a lot to like about this double grade 3 winner. Ranked 15th in her division, this one showed nice improvement last time out when finishing second in a 6.5 furlongs stakes race in California. She was beaten by a smart one that day, but her effort in defeat was her best track performance and she was rewarded with a speed figure of 88, her best yet. She is coming off a nice long rest and if showing her last run was no fluke she is going to be in the shake up here.

NOTIN TO CRY ABOUT wins 141142 L Gee 5/12 yo filly
Nothing to lose x Shaadi x Compliance
8 runs 5 wins 1 second $418580
Its a funny old world. She probably was the cheapest out of all of these to breed, out of a run of the mill grade G mare yet she boasts a grade 1 and two stakes wins, she is rated 1 in the juvenile fillies sprint turf division and boasts the fastest speed of any of these, achieved last time out when finishing 2nd in a 7.5 furlong stakes in Oklahoma. She was very unlucky that day to run into a huge improver, and her speed of 93 would have been good enough to win most races. there is one cloud on the horizon though and its the trip. Her best runs have came over longer and it wouldnt be any surprise to see her turn out a miler. How will she cope with the drop back in trip? Who knows but if she shows the same as what she does over longer she wins.

7 runs 5 wins $150180
Big price fora triple stakes winning filly, could there be a bit of value here? This trip shouldnt be a problem as she has been finishing well over 5.5 furlongs.Last time out she ran her best race to date when winning a small stakes race in Connecticut over 5.5 furlongs, getting up in the final furlong to win by 1/4 length. Her speed of 80 was a pb, and although it leaves her quite a bit to do here the extra half a furlong may find further improvement in her.
POGO PREDICTS
With such a trappy and unpredictable race im just going to go with my hunches. 8 to beat 12 with 5 in third.
