Preview Doomben Cup Grade 1 Queensland
This week sees a stellar carnival in Queensland with the feature of the program, the Grade 1 Doomben Cup attracting a field of 12.
Topping the field is the royally bred, Seeking the Gold 4 year old colt Another Tenpin Tap.
Running out of the tenpin6 stable, he has 7 wins from 13 starts including a nice stakes win at this distance two starts back.
Undoubtedly a threat to some of the older more established horses here, his best distance looks to be around the 10 furlongs and his trainer should get an idea of his class with the step up to graded company.
He runs best out in front so if the number 1 saddlecloth isn’t right up there from the start you can probably just about rip up your ticket.
Legitimate claims at a juicy 11/1.
From gate 2 jumps the out of form Dela Groom T.
Trainer highc has given his Gone West charge little rest this year with 8 starts already under his belt.
After starting the year off well with 2 stakes wins and a 2nd in a Grade 1 he has been flat and looked in need of a break after 4 straight below par efforts.
This is his preferred distance hitting a 110 in similar company in March this year but his recent spate of 90’s speed figures sees him placed at 12/1 and second outsider.
A chance on his day, but others are in much better form.
I try not to judge my fellow SIM trainers too often but monimonica may have lost her mind with George W. Loser.
Better suited to the lowest of claiming or restricted allowance races, somehow this son of Polish Precedent finds his way into this grade 1 race at 99/1 (and will probably start at triple digit odds).
Has no hope no matter what happens this weekend and if he wins I will eat my hat and put a photo on the sim homepage.
Another no hoper (nah… just kidding) takes his spot in the field in Minor Miracle, running for the oscar yard.
The chilcoat stables have this son of Cozzene in supreme form as he comes off 2 consecutive wins, in a grade 3 and an open stakes race.
Lightly raced at 3 and sitting at 7 wins from 11 starts, there’s no question of this 4 year old’s class but whether he can produce a 110+ SP to guarantee a win here is the big question.
A healthy 7/1 and equal 3rd favourite and other than the fear of the monster favourite creeping up behind him, he should get a nice seat up on the pace.
Must include in multiples.
Yet another lightly raced 4 year old, Swainny has already compiled a pretty good résumé in just 10 starts.
Trainer fatflab has been building up a solid racing base for the most successful of the 2005 crop of Swain progeny.
After winning the Grade 2 Hallelujah Turf Cup 2 races back, he stayed at Grade 2 level to somehow get pipped by half a length posting a 108 speed figure.
Has only run a mile and a half once for a 98 speed figure which won’t be good enough here but if his recent form means anything he is not to be ignored.
Not the worst, at 9/1.
Ranked 13 in the Turf Long Route category is the formidable Puppet Regime who will break from barrier 6.
Running for the wrecks2 yard, he has mainly raced over 12 furlongs since early 2006.
He did have some success in his early career over this distance and the Ledwith Empire will be looking for a similar effort here.
With trainer stats of 30.8% winners, it’s hard to say the Kingmambo colt will get beaten here despite the drop back in distance, but he’ll still have to beat the very short favourite, not to mention the rest of the tough field.
Never discount and look for him to sprint home when the other horses have tired themselves out.
The hook stable will be watching closely as Cash in the Bank (IRE) carries their graded hopes this week and jumps from the 7 gate.
The lone mare in a field full of old and young males may have her work cut out here as some of the boys look class acts. It may require her to run right up to her best and a couple of the boys to dissapoint in order to take the win.She has won 11 of her 31 races and almost $750000 so she aint due anybody anything.
Next up we have the 4 yo Woodman colt Green Valley going for the Lenny26 stable. A good colt in his own right he is a multi stakes winner, and a winner of 6 of his 17 starts. The problem may be his speed figures are not comparable with the market leaders. Sure to stay this and more it may be a place at best for this one. He is 11/1 and V Singleton takes the ride.
Out of 9 we have the well backed early bird favourite Sip of Saki. What can I say about this class act. Every sim owner would surely love a horse like this,a strapping 5 yo Sakhee horse. He is a multiple grade 1 winner, has won 3 on the bounce and looks in the form of his life. Owner bjbandit2 must be very proud of this horses achievements. Rock solid favourite at 2/1 the only slight quibble may be the trip is a shade longer than his best distance, but make no bone about it this one is going to be very difficult to beat. Top track jockey C Wyatt will do the steering.
Neuryburg is in 10 going for Boldrule99. I feel slighly sorry for this one as it seems the bookies have totally dismissed him after one poor run lto. I think they have ruled him out as a non stayer but his run before that over 9 was much better when just going down by 3/4l in a grade 3. He ran a 107 that day and would need a repeat of that over this extra furlong just to get placed. Priced up at 23/1 the experienced Fr Miller is the man on board.
In 11 we have another outsider in the 19/1 shot Flushing Water. The horse from the pm stable looks decent enough in his own grade, but unless he shows significant improvement here it looks an uphill struggle. He is graded stakes placed but has never managed to get his head in front in a stakes race and it will be the training performance of the year if pm can make this race his first. C Pearce rides this 4 yo High Chaparral colt
Finally drawn on the wide outside in 12 we have Balerion going for khalasar. This one is a multi stakes winner and has a remarkable strike rate of 50%, winning well over $1000000 in prizemoney. Lto won a 10 furlongs grade 3 with a 105. Sure to be up in the van from the off, the very pick of his form when winning the grade 1 movieland cup,California just over a year ago with a 109 gives him a squeak. This 5 yo horse by mineshaft will be ridden by M Radke and is a 7/1 shot on the morning line.
Conclusion
Its hard to get away from classy Sip of Saki in his current form, even though its not his optimum trip. Swainny could just be on the upgrade so i will take him to finish runner up with Balerion to finish third.
