Equinics 2016: The David Bowie (8f Dirt 3yo Fillies)
Equinics 2016- The David Bowie (8f Dirt 3yo Fillies)
Here we take a look at the David Bowie, the Equinics race for the dirt mile specialist fillies of the Sim. The race is named in commemoration, of course, for the great singer/songwriter who passed away in early 2016. With that said, let’s take a look at our equine athletes.
The QRC contestant 1 Eighteen Summers debuted in a maiden claimer back in March of 2015, and has now proved that she’s worth much more than the $60,000 price tag she was bought for by MichaelB. She’s a bay filly by Colonel John out of Fire Goes Higher by Zabeel, and has won six races on seventeen lifetime appearances, earning $152k in total, though her trophy case remains vacant. The filly had a good thing going back in March, as she won three allowance contests in a row through May, and unexpectedly dropped off in her last start, finishing sixth beaten twelve in a $60,000 allowance. She’s a useful filly but might have a similar showing to her last amongst these.
[ 2 ] Xantico Zip breaks from the two hole today for Daniel and the ESR, looking to continue a streak where she’s either placed or visited the winners’ circle in her past four starts. She’s a chestnut filly by City Zip and scratch-bred to A.P. Indy, and she’s a 50% winner on twelve starts, earning $424k in those twelve, while picking up only one stakes win in the Carby’s Redhead Dirt Filly Route. Two starts back she held for a game second in the Chestnut Stakes G1 and prior to that was second in the Great Fiddlesticks Handicap G3. She’ll look to become the bridesmaid and not the bride, but I like her to finish third in this event, and I’ll give her my hypothetical bronze medal.
3 Eucla Astatine reps the Tulloch Stable of MIDAS fresh off a nice effort in the Sister Hen G1 to pick up a few places coming down the stretch. She’s a light-grey daughter of City Zip and Outback Astatine, a stakes winning mare by Tapit. This filly is a four-time victor on nine attempts and her resume includes wins in the Broad Mecke Dirt Juvenile Fillies and the Selena G3. She’s improved since spring of 2016, where she ran badly in her two starts in January and March, being head-bobbed out of a win in the Ballet listed stakes, winning the Selena and putting up a respectable fourth in the Sister Hen G1. However I like a few others better here, but this one will definitely be within striking distance, and has a nice chance to win this race. I’ll use her as my value play at 11-1.
4 Forest On The Moon is my own filly and will thus be representing the NWRC, and she posted a career best 103 SP in the Carby’s Redhead Dirt Filly Route last out. She’s by Forestry out of stakes winner Pro Moon, a Mr. Prospector mare, and is three for thirteen lifetime, with no stakes win to boast. She switched to the dirt midway through her career, and has placed in two stakes events to date, and ran a good fourth in the G1 California Oaks. I don’t think she belongs in the top 3 here, but she’s really my only horse I think could maybe win their race. Nevertheless I’ll leave her off the ticket at 16-1.
5 The Bulb Factor is a real classy filly and one I’ve covered before, and she’ll represent Tyedye and the EWC. This filly is by Distorted Humor out of G1 winner Holy Bulb, and has won five of thirteen races, and is the only one here to surpass the one million mark, earning $1.05 Million. Her two major triumphs were the G1 Movieland Starlet and the G1 California Oaks. Her appearances since May however have been looking a little dull, finishing fifteenth in the Bluegrass Oaks G1, sixth in the Chestnut Stakes G1, and a little better last out; fourth in the G2 First State Oaks. I think she’ll get back to form here and grab second to one more I think is just a little sharper. Silver medal to The Bulb Factor.
6 NYAH will be looking to bounce back dramatically here for Ace and EURO, as she’s finished exactly ninth by eight in her last two starts, both graded stakes. She’s by Bodemeister out of stakes winner Fleury by Forty Niner, and has won five races on ten lifetime starts, earning $207k. Her singular stakes win was the G3 Timber Stakes. The filly has inexplicably dropped off in her past two starts and it’d be a fairly big upset if she wins at 20-1. I’ll be leaving her off my podium here.
The GR Simsters/Silversun Stables runner 7 Queen Lioness is a nice filly who has big speed, and it shows, as she’s won all of her races being either first or second at the first call. She’s a Medaglia D’Oro filly scratch bred to Storm Cat and has won five of ten dashes for earnings of $420k, winning the Seattle Dixie Dirt Filly Mile and the G2 Mellow Breeze Handicap, both by open lengths. She’s definitely a graded stakes class horse, and she has gold medal potential, but for betting purposes she’s out of my top three.
8 Dark Louie’s Craft will wear the Darkstars colours for Megalopolis Racing Circuit, and will be on the dirt for just the third time in her career for this event. The Not For Love filly is out of Monsun mare Louie’s Crafty and has earned $223k on thirteen starts lifetime with two wins. Her sole stakes trophy came from the It’s All About The Speed And Stamina Stakes. The filly was looking pretty bad in her first three starts of 2016, never running closer than tenth in three graded staked, but started improving her her last two, finishing fourth and sixth in two listed stakes. All considered, her chance of winning is probably reflected well in her 26-1 odds.
9 Moon Sparkle has not failed to pick up a check in her entire racing career and has a decent chance to continue that streak here. The three time winner on ten races is by Empire Maker and is scratch bred to Storm cat, and the filly has earned $176k lifetime. Her trophy case remains empty but she’s gotten close to picking one up on several occasions. The filly’s finished second in two stakes events in her past four, and fourth in another two after winning two allowance events in a row in impressive fashion. However there are a few others I like better in here and I’m going to leave her off the podium, but watch for her down the lane for John Stables and the URC.
10 A Thousands Stars will step up several classes after winning several races at the allowance level and picking up a fourth in the Dubai 1000 Guineas in February. The Dixie Dot Co. filly is by Sea The Stars out of Kingmambo mare Seize The Throne, has earned $160k on nine starts and five wins and will wear the Pastures Of Green colours today. She’s got no stakes wins with only one try in a G3. The multi-talented filly has two wins on the grass and three on the dirt, likely a result of the bloodlines of her sire and dam (who has produced four graded stakes winners) both taking some effect on the horse. However the owner’s decided to go with dirt for her entry after she scored her first 100+ speed figure on the surface last time. She’s climbing up the class ladder a step too far this time in my opinion and she’ll be off my ticket.
11 Cabaretera will be coming off two on-the-board stakes showings in a row after showing big improvement in her three year old campaign for Pato Stables. She’s by Encosta De Lago out of No Field Five by Rock Hard Ten and has made $156k on nine starts and four wins lifetime, but her stakes win tally remains at zero. Going for Hispano Parlante today, The filly will look to continue the success she’s had at the stakes class. She could have trouble though as this will be a big step up for her today, and she’s facing some much tougher competition. I’m going to leave her off the ticket today but she’s in with a chance like so many others are as well today.
12 Smart Zapper will look to continue the success he’s had at the stakes class with two wins and a place. She’s by Smart Strike and scratch bred to the DS Unbridled, and she’s won four times on nine tries for earnings of $319k for HarryLan Racing. Today for the ERC, she’ll look to continue off of a grade three victory two starts back, while she struggled on a mile around a grass course last out. I think she’s got a shot today, and I’m gonna throw her in as my longshot play at 14-1.
13 Nasty Beer LV will want to get Bizalls and the Eh Team a gold medal after placing in a grade three last out. She’s by Dynasty and out of Flying Spur mare Beer Garden, and the filly’s won seven of twelve lifetime for $280k in earnings. Her only major win was the Tiz Miss Dirt Filly Route. Three starts back she was attempting to make a seven-race win streak eight but was finally toppled in her first graded stakes appearance as she finished third by four in the G2 Mellow Breeze Handicap. In her next race she was seventh in the Black Middle Flower Stakes G2, and was second by a length in the Meadows Oaks G3. She’s making a lot of headway this season and is in with a shot here, but she’s out of my top three.
14 Bad Qualities runs off of a two race win streak in which she took two graded stakes events. The sophomore by Elusive Quality and out of stakes winner Bad Stella by Dubawi has won five races of twelve starts lifetime for earnings of $870k, picking up victories in the Caddilac Moon Dirt Filly Route, the Black Middle Flower G2 and the Sister Hen Stakes G1 last out. This girl is sharp as a tack and is very talented, and for that reason I’m going to select her as my gold medal winner for Tenpoint Stables and the ASR.
15 Jenny’s Piccolo has been a mid-level claimer most of her life and is going up against a stacked field of stakes winners, and that really doesn’t bode well for her. She’s by Piccolo and scratch bred to Flatter, winning four of ten lifetime appearances to earn $81k, with no stakes (or even allowance) victories to note. This filly has everything stacked against her, with no two-turn wins, no allowance wins and an average try in a starter allowance last out. She was claimed by UKWoman Farms as a freshman and was a good investment, but she’s out of place here, and thus she’s not on the ticket. She’ll break for BANRC
16 Elusive Mine ER is the Testbarn goer, racing for Cothill stables, and will look to continue a streak in which she’s either won or placed in her past five runs. This filly is by Elusive Quality and out of stakes winning Mineshaft mare Minecraft ER, and has won half the time on a fourteen race career, earning $204k, picking up her only stakes win in the Demand Success Dirt Filly Sprint. She’s been looking as good as she’s ever been in her past three showings, beating a 100 SP in each of them and winning her last two. This field might be a little tough for her but she’s definitely in the running.
17 Doing It Right is a light gray mare coming off two races where she’s averaged a 111 SP and winning both of them; a rich allowance and a listed stakes. She’s by Malibu Moon and out of Doing Damage, an Unbridled’s Song mare, and is five for nine lifetime to earn $118k. Her last start, the Northern Red Dirt Filly Route, was her only major victory. She’s an improver this season, winning three of six and placed in one other listed stakes contest. However there are a few that look more impressive and I’ll have to leave her off the ticket. She’s got a shot for MTK Racing and Blazing Saddles.
18 Sophia Loren was entered in six G1s in a row from October 2015-May 2016, unfortunately winning none of them, and has only won two races lifetime despite looking like a high-class filly her whole life. She reminds me of a standardbred named Win One Soon who was entered in many stakes events but didn’t actually win a race until a few years into his career, ironically. This Sim filly is by Ghostzapper and out of Bernardini mare Ava Gardner, has won two of thirteen lifetime, and has actually no stakes win, but three second place finishes in grade ones. The filly has not visited the winner’s circle since August 25, 2015, and I think she’ll probably be waiting one more race her under Super1 Stables and DelPenn National.
19 Hans Solo TB has a similar case to Jenny’s Piccolo, but has actually lost just one race since being claimed by DontBetOnMe Stables in October 2015. This is a Talip Han bargain bred out of My Blue Song (by Singspiel) and is a seven time winner on eleven lifetime starts for earnings of $155k, but no stakes wins. This one does have an allowance win and was looking pretty competitive in the starter allowance classes in her past two, but I think the opposite will be true here, as she looks like a non-factor here for Racing HQ.
