The Bargain Bred Racing Series rolls on with the Johns Call.  Run at 12 furlongs (or ~2400 meters for the metric set) over what will be a firm turf course as the marvelous spring weather continues here in South Africa,  a select field of six,  including a filly and a pair of sophomore colts,  will line up for the winner’s share of the $150,000 purse on tap.  The lglong racing group seems to have a strong hand as it saddles a pair of older males with 39 victories between them;  one of them,  Basilisk Isles seeks a three-peat in this event.  The plano barn sends out a filly taking on the boys,  and she is once beaten in ten outings.  Lamepony and nwmktepsom have entered their three year old colts here looking for an upset,  and BBRS honcho txknight2 (knightmare) takes a shot with his entry.  Lets take a closer look at them and see how they stack up.

First up we have this bay four year old who was an excellent 2nd last out to Sea Levels High in The Wombat Cup listed stakes at two miles,  snatching a 98 SP# moving from 6th of seven,  with Palline Blu back in 3rd.  One before that he romped in a restricted allowance at 16 furlongs,  snaring a 92 SP# while never far off the pace setters.  In his previous run he settled for 2nd in  a restricted allowance at two miles,  scoring a 92 SP# from just off the pace.  Cuts back a half mile in distance from recent tries,  may sharpen his late kick,  solid contender for owner/trainer lglng2yzt.

Once beaten in ten tries,  this bay filly takes on the boys again after a convincing triumph in The Wombat Cup listed stakes at 16 panels,  zipping a 99 SP# making a strong middle move,  with Xaaro and Palline Blu in her dust.  One back of that she was a good 2nd in the Arc de Maleleve listed at this route,  sizzling a 103 SP# with Pauline Blu and Basilisk Isles trailing behind her.  Her previous start was a facile victory in a NW3x allowance at 13.5 furlongs,  slinging a 93 SP# moving from last of  five.  Plano trainee is 4-3-1-0 at this distance,  looks to be the one to beat in this heat.

Brown seven year old has 24 career wins in 43 starts,  including the last two rendtions of this race,  but may be showing his age of late.  He did win a hot race allowance at this trip over rhis strip last out in a tune up for this spot,  getting a 51 SP# at the shortest possible odds.  One before that he faltered badly in The Arc de Maleleve at this route,  coming home 7th behind Sea Levels High and Palline Blu after pressing the early pace,  lucking into an 84 SP#.  He tuned up for the Arc with a runaway hot race allowance score,  posting a 60 SP# in a wire to wire run.  Seems to be the lesser of the lglong uncoupled entry,  but he did win this event the last two years;  three-peat victory would be quite an accomplishment.

The first of our three year olds is this speedster who set the early pace before foldiing in The Wombat Cup at 16 furlongs,  25L behind Sea Levels High,  lasting for 3rd and an 85 SP#.  In his previous outing,  bay colt set the pace in the Arc de Maleleve at this trip but tired  to 4th,  far behind Sea Levels High,  bagging a 91 SP#.  One before that he settled for 2nd after leading from the start in a NW4L allowance at 10 panels,  busting a 91 SP#.  Runner from the lamepony racing operation should be prominent early,  but can’t see him being close to the top two at the wire.

Bay four year old was 3rd in this event last year;  he won his first 2015 start but hasn’t hit the board since in his last seven tries.  Last out he was an even,  but uninvolved 5th of six in The Pearl Cup listed stakes at 9 furlongs,  grabbing an 87 SP#.  In his prior run he set the early fractions before fading to a well beaten 4th in a NW3x allowance at two miles,  posting a 67 SP#.  He was distanced in his previous outing,  The Hinterland allowance at 14 furlongs on dirt,  getting a 64 SP# after showing a little early lick.   Txknight2 trainee will need a form turnaround to contend here.

Our final entrant is the other three year old,  who was a gaining 3rd last out in the Arc de Maleleve at this route in his first try against older,  nailing a 100 SP# behind Sea Levels High,  while besting Palline Blu and Basilisk Isles.  One back of that,  this bay colt ran off with a NW3L allowance at this trip,  notching a 94 SP# in a four horse field.  His prior run was an even 5th in a NW3L allowance at 10 panels,  knocking down a 99 SP#.  Improving sophomore can surprise his elders on top try for owner/trainer nwmktepsom.

My selection squad is soaking up the sun somewhere warm,  so I’ll just wish everybody good luck and may they all come home fast,  safe and sound.
