A “DIVINE” Upset at the LA Derby!
LA Derby Stakes
Grade I
A mile and one quarter on Fast Dirt
$500,000
All horses, 3 years old
The big showdown between ERMINGTON PEGUSUS and NEW FOUND CYCLONE never materialized and when it was over DIVINE INSPIRATION showed that by the end of the year she may be the three year old filly that everyone is talking about.
DIVINE INSPIRATION added to her already impressive record with her seventh win and third Graded win in only fifteen starts. She now has almost $900,000 in earnings and trainer Win has to believe that she is just hitting her peak as she ran her best speed to date with a sizzling 110 SPF. She had plenty at the end as she hit another gear when pushed by GENOCIDE JUNKIES in the stretch. The filly by PULPIT out of DEVINE CAT has a chance to be one of the favorites in the Breeders Bowl now with a number six ranking among the young fillies.
SO SLEW ME jumped out to the early lead and looked like she thought it was a sprint with a speedy first quarter and a lead that she built up to nearly four lengths. She tired badly at the half and faded to more than nineteen lengths back at the end. GENOCIDE JUNKIES held on for second rather easily over ERMINGTON PEGUSUS who settled for third. The big surprise was what happened to favorite NEW FOUND CYCLONE who ran a lackluster race and finished more than fourteen lengths back in sixth place. Is this a one time thing or does it foretell more problems for the young filly?
This race certainly sets up some interesting stories and races for the end of the year between the top ranked three year old fillies as it appears that the deck may shuffle a bit from here on in.
Good luck to all runners!
