Loaded field squares up in NY
Hello race fans and welcome to another addition of Hoof Beats . New York is a virtual hot bed of racing action this week , owner / trainers converging upon the big apple in search of big stake points . The juvenile filly division has come to a boiling point and the question on everyone’s mind is …. who’s gonna be the Dutchess of New York !?!?! That’s right folks ! It’s time for the first annual Dutchess of New York -G2 . A classic showdown over one mile of fast dirt for fillies 2 yo , the purse of $ 250,000 pales in comparison to much needed stake points to gain a berth in the years greatest race … the Breeders Bowl . Some big names have graced the field today , some that are on the verge are also here to challenge to be the first ever name on the list of this juvenile race and set the bar for future hopefuls .
Drawing the wood at 13 / 1 is Greenapple stables star Spirit Realm ( Ghostzapper x War Chant x Alydar ) ridden by veteran jockey C . Jamison . This brown daughter of Ghostzapper is making her graded debut among a very tough field of tested runners . The big chip on her shoulder is that she’s run this distance twice before and is improving steadily , this could be her week to make a statement in a big way . Stalking is her best chance in this field , the closer the better to the pace .
In post 2 is Saint Coronado 15 / 1 ( Coronado’s Quest x Broad Brush x Saint Ballado ) a promising charge of the Camry racing stable and ridden by veteran jockey N . Painter . This leggy brown filly has certainly found her stride at 8 furlongs winning her last 2 over that very distance on the road in CA and BC . At the front is where she likes it and this race should be no exception . Making her graded debut as well today she looks more than ready to put all caution to the wind and make the field chase her all the way to the wire .
In post 3 at 7 / 1 is the Shiekabner trained Criminally Insane ( Rahy x Summer Squall x Buckpasser ) with track sensation N . Lawton in the irons . This brown daughter of Rahy has won 2 of her 3 career starts coming late in an explosive run from behind . Last time out she came up short in the Dr. Shut-Yer-Lips Juvenile -G3 where she nearly ran down the winner . She returns today to the very track she has run her career best at and the distance suits her breeding well , all questions will be answered at the wire for this beautiful filly .
In post 4 is Pole Dancin 15 / 1 ( Stormy Atlantic x Golden Missle x American Chance ) from the stables of Amie1526 , veteran B . Dirks gets the nod . Winner at first asking she went on to win her second race in Allowance company . She’s had a bit of bad luck last 2 starts and makes a jump in distance and class this week in a very tough field of fillies . The good news is that she is familiar with the track so should make a good showing with the added distance .
In post 5 at 8 / 1 is Hard Rock Gold ( Rock Hard Ten x Seeking the Gold x Nijinsky II ) journeyman G . Rolling gets the nod representing the stables of Jkj3 . This filly was on fire from the word go … winning her first 3 wire to wire including her gutsy finish in The Sleet Storm Bonanza -Stk . Her last start in OH week 2951 was at 8 furlongs over an off track which may be the reason for the break in her win streak . She returns today to the very track she broke her maiden at months ago and looking to improve on her rank 55 in the juvenile dirt division .
In post 6 ridden by veteran A . Tuten is Fantastic Deputy 20 / 1 ( Fantasticat x Deputy Minister x Dancing Brave ) from the stables of Animekid . This brown fillies stalking style garnered her 2 early wins including her week 2860 victory in The Senorita Holy Handicap -Stk over 5.5 furlongs in PT . She makes her graded debut today in hopes that the added distance will spark this filly into action and back to her winning ways again . Her game dam was a prolific router , so hopes are hung on that she will like the mile today .
In post 7 is the Sarava02 trained Feuerbefehl 8 / 1 ( Cat Thief x Forty Niner x Halo ) ridden by winning journeyman A . Sailor . This beautiful daughter of Cat Thief has won 2 of her 3 career starts sprinting including her last start week 2958 in The Double Blush Bonanza -Stk , both races she shadowed the lead horse and muscled her way past to win . If she follows that recipe it could be a wreath of flowers and a graded win cookin in the oven . Her game dam won sprinting but had her most success routing , the added distance shouldn’t be a factor today .
In post 8 at 10 / 1 is Supercilious ( Stormin Fever x Salt Lake x Touch Gold ) representing the Rottn1 stable , 100+ win veteran jockey L . Hoskins gets the assignment today . To sum it up in one word … WOW!! This fiery brown daughter of Stormin Fever has been on fire winning her last 4 starts in a convincing manner . Her last start in The Repulsively Pop Bonanza -Stk was a wire to wire romp week 2958 resulting in an 88 SP effort in 1:23:3/5 over 7 furlongs of fast dirt . Her game dam was primarily a turf router so the added distance might just make this filly explode into action . Ranked 24 in the sprint and 48 in the classic … this filly needs a win today to garner a BB berth .
In post 9 is co-favorite Jacobite Hot Sauce 5 / 1 ( Temescal Ridge x Tale of the Cat x Mr. Greely ) representing the stables of Thearkle and ridden by veteran Er Anderson . This roan filly is at the top of her game and is highly ranked in the juvenile filly division ( 2S , 4C , 4L ) and boasts a record of 6:3-2-0 with $350,00 in earnings . Her last outing in week 2965 was a heart breaking loss by a head to the number 1 sprinting filly in the country on this same track in the Getaway Stakes -G1 ( 7 furlongs) 1:23:3/5 blasting out an 89 SP . Graded company is bread and butter to this filly and she’s hungry today as she embarks on her first mile trip .
In post 10 at 12 / 1 is Wheels of Steel ( Cryptoclearance x El Gran Senor x Riverman ) from the Worldwide stable and ridden by winning journeyman P. Davis . This brown daughter of Cryptoclearance has won 2 of 3 including her last start over 8 furlongs in The Nijinsky Western (IRE) Challenge -Stk where she stormed home from the back to win by 2 over an off track in OH 1:37:3/5 for an 81 SP effort . Graded company is the obvious next step for this talented filly , she’s ranked 19 in the classic juvenile and todays race just might put her where she needs to be for a BB berth .
In post 11 is Depub 12 / 1 ( Deputy Storm x Deputy Minister x Smarten Up ) ridden by the big earning veteran R. Haffner and representing trainer Artsim . This fillies last win came in week 2832 where she wired a large VT field in a MSW over 6 furlongs 1:11:4/5 76 SP first asking . Her last 2 starts have been in stakes and graded company resulting in 2 second place finishes . She has been improving when the course gets longer and the mile distance today suits her breeding .
In post 12 at 14 / 1 is the Lhr trained filly My War Hero ( War Chant x Hay Halo x Nureyev ) Millionaire youngster D . Ledwith gets the nod . She has wired her last 2 starts including The I’ll Bet That Memorial -Stk in BC 7.5 furlongs in 1:31:2/5 by 2 lengths 80 SP effort . Her game dam was primarily a sprinter but did find success routing . She makes a big step up in class today and should make a good race of it .
In post 13 is the second co-favorite Battle Cruiser 5 / 1 ( Unbridled’s Song x War Chant x Sadler’s Wells ) trained by Kyclocker2 and ridden by big winning veteran B . Child . This light grey daughter of Unbridled’s Song is the Classic divisions number 2 ranked filly . With $ 378,000 in earnings she has a record of 4 : 2-2-0 including her last outing in FL week 2937 where she lost by a head in the KYhorsemen Debutante -G1 over 8 furlongs 1:36:4/5 and putting up an 87 SP in a capacity field . Her game dam was a 6 figure earning dirt router whom really came alive in her 3 yo season . If this is any indication of what’s to come … I’m eagerly awaiting next year’s efforts from this classy filly .
On the outside sporting ole number 14 is Hawk the Gold 18 / 1 ( Aptitude x Seeking the Gold x Summer Squall ) trained by Dreambig and ridden by veteran jockey A. Roberts . This chestnut daughter of Aptitude won first asking in week 2880 , wiring a small MSW field over 6 furlongs in 1:12:3/5 . Since then it’s been some tough love in the stakes arena yet she proudly makes her graded debut amongst some of the toughest competition available this season . There is certainly nothing wrong with ” Dreamin Big ” and i hoipe your filly does well for you today .
Wow is the only word to describe this EPIC meeting of class in New York this weekend . The number 2 sprinting filly goes head 2 head with the number 2 classic filly … that’s a whole lotta 2’s . That aside the field is so loaded with class it would be presumptuous of me to call the race so I’ll leave you all with a hearty blessing of luck .
