Will A ‘Rabbit’ Benefit from Laying Back Early?
The ROGUE CORNHOLIO STAKES
One mile and three eighths Fast Dirt $70,000
All horses 4 years old and up
Louisiana Downs plays host Saturday to the inaugural running of the Rogue Cornholio Stakes. A small but competitive field of four will enter the starting gate in hopes to capture this $70,000 stakes event. This stakes event is named in honor of a former sim performer. Rogue Cornholio is a ten year old horse that had a sim racing career that stretched out for four years, fifty-four races and ten wins.
As for the field for the running of the 2006 The ROGUE CORNHOLIO STAKES:
PP1 | rainbow knight | Owner- | Saintly271 | Jockey- | D Hogin | Odds | 9/5 |
Seeking the Gold x A.P. Indy
This front runner faded badly in his last outing, but ownership is hoping that the month layoff has rejuvenated him. He likes to run on or very close to the lead, and won gate to wire in a 12 furlong stakes event (One Glory Bonanza Stakes) two races back. With such a small field, gaining early positioning should not be a problem.
PP2 | autmn knee | Owner- | Adonis | Jockey- | C Schroeder | Odds | 5/1 |
Bandwagon x Icecapade
Even in a short field, placement of this runner is a bit questionable. He is jumping up from claiming competition, after finishing well back in his previous outing. One positive outlook is that his better performances have come at longer distances than the 8.5 furlongs tested in his last outing. Whereas, RAINBOW KNIGHT is expected to be on the lead, AUTMN KNEE by serve as the bookend on the other end of the field.
PP3 | slasher | Owner- | Pebbles | Jockey- | O Euler | Odds | 7/2 |
Expect him to keep RAINBOW KNIGHT within rage during the early stages. However, SLASHER has struggled to carry the distance and may serve to wear both him and RAINBOW KNIGHT down.
PP4 | son of rabbit | Owner- | wnrscircle | Jockey- | F Oxon | Odds | 4/5 |
Miesque’s Son x Machivellian
Morning line favorite- SON OF RABBIT may benefit from the expected challenge that SLASHER will give RAINBOW KNIGHT on the lead. The small field should not create any traffic problems for this “middle of the pack” runner, but ownership is hoping that he will show some spark the final one-half mile; after two lack-luster trips. A veteran of fifty races, one has to start wondering if this six year old is beginning to slow down. Seeing that track’s leading jockey selected this mount shows that he thinks this rabbit can still bounce.
A small field consisting of competition at the front, a stalking favorite, and a long shot late runner indicates that the closing strides to the wire may be exciting. My selection:
son of rabbit (win) with RAINBOW KNIGHT hanging on to (place)
