Eating crow, West Virginia style

By ITCH

Wb11’s NEW DELIVERY ($27.70) came flying late Saturday here at the Spa of the Appalachians, nailing Isitingood’s MOUNT ST. HELENS on the wire for all the money in the seven-furlong, $40,000 Maine Deputy Memorial.

Last of 14 down the backstretch, New Delivery, who was available for a $50,000 claim tag just three races ago, unleashed a believable impression of Silky Sullivan. He split horses at the top of the stretch, blowing by this writer’s colt, Maol Dhomnaigh, then surged at the wire to catch an unlucky Mount St. Helens. Journey to Jupiter was in his regular spot in third, shutting out all trainers in the West Virginia Stakes Competition.

Me and my big mouth. The Gaelic Charger came back Needs Rest, and we are officially off the Derby Trail. Congratulations of the trainers of the first two, who were shrewd to spot their colts in a winning spot moving up in class.
