We All Screamed for Ice Cream!
The KILBEGGAN Special Stakes
Six and one half furlongs on Firm Turf
$35,000
All Horses, 3 years old
It seems a little bit cool in the D.C. area for Ice Cream but the were all screaming for BARB’S ICE CREAM who won by the narrowest of margins in the KILBEGGIN Special Stakes at Emerald Downs Racetrack today. The Six and a half furlong race for three year olds was run on a firm turf track and was truly an exciting run.
The race started off like a Chinese Fire Drill as they were all within a couple of lengths of the lead with the eventual winner in last but only 2 back of CAME DANCING who had grabbed the early lead. RAINBOW FLUX then took his turn in front and looked strong until BARB’S ICE CREAM started to make a late move. Jockey Jenkin’s experience showed as he pushed the beautiful grey colt to the wire a bare head in front of FLUX. FANTASTIC MUSE finished third but was well back in this two horse race.
Trainer Wolverine had mentioned earlier in the week that BARB’S ICE CREAM was jumping during workouts and was a bundle of energy in the paddock area before the race. He and Jenkins were certainly able to harness that energy and point it in the right direction as the winner looked as if he had plenty left at the end.
The 87 SPF was the winner’s best time to date and was after four consecutive 84’s in his last four outings. He continues to improve and will make some noise this three year old season.
Best of luck to all of these fine three year olds.
