A ‘Steal’ At The Mama Sir Challenge

Welcome to Wisconsin on this snowy Saturday afternoon.  We have had a full day of racing, despite the weather, and our feature race is coming up.  We have 5 good-looking 5 year old mares trying for today’s Mama Sir Challenge, a $50,000 mile and a half run on the Fast dirt course for Fillies and Mares, 4 years and up.  Here come our runners for the post parade, so let’s see who we have today……

In PP1, we have #8563 One Good Steal, a cream trained, well bred brown mare by Kingmambo out of Jo Ann Christmas(Caerleon x Sharpen Up(GB)) and is 30/11-4-3 lifetime.  This big mare still has the capability to win route stakes, despite her age.  She has been winless in her last 4 stakes starts but she has been putting up some nice speeds and has been a stakes winner previously, so I can see her being a major threat here today.  She is the favorite here at 6/5 and has jockey C. Capper in the saddle.

Next, we have, in PP2, #25858 War Caps.  This chestnut whip2win trained mare is by War Emblem out of Our Caps(Capote x Liloy(FR)) and is 24/4-7-1 lifetime.  This mare can certainly go the distance, but her speeds have been nothing like those of One Good Steal, and her record in stakes events has been less than stellar, finishing second once in all her attempts.  To have the chance to win, she will have to pick up the pace a lot to beat the favorite.  She is at odds of 7/2 and has jock A. McDowell in the irons.

In the middle, in PP3, is #18691 Senorita Jodie, a brown mig2 trained mare sired by Awesome Again out of a Second Bar mare and is 16/1-1-2 lifetime.  This mare is making her second stakes start, but is coming off a dismal 7th place finish in her first stakes outing last time out.  She does not seem to have the same speeds as the others, has never raced at this distance, and she still has almost all of her allowance conditions to go through.  She is the outsider here today at odds of 16/1 and is ridden by S. Calwell.

Then, in PP4, we have #8000 Global Snow Mine.  The miguel91 trainee is a brown mare by Snow Ridge out of a mare by Polish Navy.  This mare will give today’s favorite a run for her money, especially if One Good Steal keeps up her with her recent slump.  She won a stakes race at this distance two back and did not seem to have much trouble with it, but with her come from behind style, she will have to be on the ball to get to the wire first.  She is at odds of 2/1 today and has jockey L. Olsen up.

Last, but not least, in PP5, is #60665 Shiphole, a confessor trained brown mare by Kingmambo based on Our Swill(A.P. Indy x Gustoso).  This mare has done most of her racing on turf, but her one dirt stakes start showed some glimmers of promise, finishing third, especially since her first two starts on dirt were not so promising.  If she can go the mile and a half and repeat her performance in that dirt stakes, she has a real shot of at least hitting the board here.  She is at odds of 9/2 and has jockey M. Snider up.

We have a small field here today, but it will still be a close, competitive race. I am going to go with the 1, the 4, and the 5 to round out my top 3, but as we all know, anything can happen.  Good Luck and Good Racing
