Knightmare’s Breeding Corner

Cadeaux Genereux  (GB) (920)

We kick off the new year with an oldie but goodie. Cadeaux Genereux (GB) is a twenty one year old sire. He has had very good success in real life and has even produced a pretty good sim runner. He is at that point though where the new sires draw more attention here in the sim and older sires like Cadeaux get overlooked. For those of us that sift through the heap of sires looking for those that are overlooked I think this one fits the mold.

Real Life- Cadeaux Genereux (GB) is by Young Generation. His dam sire is Sharpen Up (GB) and his dam’s dam sire was Soderini. Aside from Sharpen Up his pedigree does not have a lot of well known sires. He was a dual grade I winner on his way to winning seven of fifteen lifetime starts. He did his damage on the turf in sprints. Cadeaux had only one start at a mile doing it at the grade I level he ran third.

He has been a very solid sire over the years producing six grade I winners lifetime. One of his more famous runners was Touch of the Blues. He came over to North America and won the G1 Atto Mile and ran second in the Breeder’s Cup Mile. Touch of the Blues placed in several other graded events. Cadeaux is known for producing solid two year olds and runners that have won from five furlongs to two miles.

Northern Dancer line dam sires have been very popular in real life breeding to Cadeaux Genereux. Sons of Northern Dance used as dam sires produce a 5×5 inbreeding or line breeding to Native Dancer. That is the inbreeding that is present in the Mr. Prospector X Northern Dancer cross. Nasrullah line sires have also been used with good success like Mill Reef, Riverman, or Blushing Groom (FR). Inbreeding to Tudor Minstrel is also present in many of his runners. Another inbreeding that has seemed to work ok has been breeding back to Crepello who is the sire of Busted (GB).

Sim Life – Cadeaux Genereux has about seventy eight current sim runners. Most of which are five years old or older. He does not have any active stakes winners but has several allowance horses running around. To this point he has produced much better on the dirt than he has on the turf. In fact his turf production is pretty sad considering what he produces in real life. He gets paired with some solid dam sires and his two runners with the most allowance wins both have Northern Dancer sons as dam sire.

He has four retired runners with earnings of over $450,000. His top lifetime runner was Talkin Freak who won over two million dollars on the track. She was a grade I winner, won five grade II races and another two grade III races. He has several retired stakes winners and no active runners currently competing in stakes so I would say he is due for another stakes winner. Dam sires used on his top retired runners were Cozzene, Danzig, Storm Bird, Roberto and Alydar.

Breeding Suggestions – I think using the Native Dancer inbreeding can be useful. A total outcross is very easy to achieve with Cadeaux’s pedigree and has worked on a couple of occasions. I would start with sons of Northern Dancer in the dam sire spot. On the high end there are several that look great like Danzig, Sadler’s Wells, Nijinsky, Nureyev, Lyphard, Dixieland Band or Storm Bird. There are even more pretty nice choices that are not quite so expensive like Unfuwain, El Gran Senor, Night Shift, Secreto or Shareef Dancer.

Sires from the Raise a Native line will also inbreed back to Native Dancer. Affirmed would seem a pretty good choice. Sons of Mr. Prospector give us that same inbreeding and there are some pretty good choices there as well like Seeking the Gold, Woodman, Gone West, Fappiano, Machiavellian, or Smart Strike.

Other sires that have seemed to have some success have been from Caro (IRE), Mill Reef, Riverman, and Blushing Groom (FR). Do not forget the Seattle Slew line or the Turn-To line sires as they should fit well. I would like to get a turf runner from him so maybe I would lean towards using a son of Northern Dancer even though all of the Mr. Prospector sires I mentioned have turf influence.

Cadeaux Genereux (GB) (920) X Storm Bird (6271) X Caro (IRE) (999)

Cadeaux Genereux (GB) (920) X Affirmed (83) X Shirley Heights (5784)

Cadeaux Genereux (GB) (920) X Smart Strike (5984) X Deputy Minister (1600)

Bargain Bred – Cadeaux Genereux only gets down to around 60-65 BPs at the end of the week. That makes it somewhat tough to bargain breed with him. You have to pair him with some really cheap sires but it can be done.

Cadeaux Genereux (GB) (920) X Rhodes (5294) X Slew the Coup (5952)

What to Expect – Even though he produces good two year olds in real life I think his sim runners take a little time to develop. He seems to produce the kind of runners that can hang around for a long time and generally peak late as three year olds and as four year olds. His runners tend to like the dirt and run faster speed figures in route races. Be sure to try his offspring on both surface and try them at all kinds of distances. He is a versatile sire.

The Breeding Corner Archives and Bargain Bred Racing Series site is under going a face lift. I hope to have it complete in the next couple of weeks. The Breeding Corner Archive will be updated will every sire I covered through 2005. As always if you have any questions, comments, or sire requests please drop me a line at mcbwildcat@aol.com. Be sure to reference the Breeding Corner. Good luck and good breeding!
