The Los Angeles Turf Cup
Grade I / Group 1*CPU - Purse : $750,000
Restricted to 3 Year Olds and Older
12 Furlongs | ~2400 Meters | One Mile and a Half Firm Turf
We have many nice G1 races on the card at various tracks this weekend. All look to be a challenge for those horses that have entered and that look for a G1 win to add to their credentials. I have taken to sunny California where The Los Angeles Turf Cup which will be the main event on the card. A full field of fourteen horses will be traveling the grueling distance of 12 furlongs across a Firm Turf track come post time. They will be contending for a purse of $750,000 and a trip to the winner’s circle to collect their check and trophy. The track appears to be in good condition and the odds makers have set their morning line odds. Post positions have been drawn for the race and the chatter at the sables is in last minute preparations as they count down the hours of which their horses will take to the Firm Turf track for this running of the G1, The Los Angeles Turf Cup.
Post Position: 1
Horse/Odds: Banned Band 23/1
Jockey: P Bangs
This 4 year old Roan colt has had twenty career starts and has hit the boards in eighteen of those races. He has had a nice Allowance career of which he has shown little mercy to those contending against him. His last outing came on 11/03/2019 in Ontario going a distance of 13 furlongs when he stepped up to face a Listed Stakes crowd of which he made short order of when he took control in the final stretch and got up for the win by 3 ¼ lengths. Jockey, P Bangs from New South Wales gets the call to fly in and take to the irons up top of this horse on Saturday as they head to the post representing the Empire State Racing residency.
Post Position: 2
Horse/Odds: Klassic Street 13/1
Sire: Shanghai Bobby
Jockey: M Zeus
This 4 year old Brown colt is a SP badge earner that has been met with difficulty when stepping up against Graded company. He has had multiple attempts in Graded races but has just not been unable to find the boards in any of those Graded outings. He last went to the track on 11/02/2019 in the G3, Allison Stakes at a distance of 10 furlongs in New Zealand. His luck did not change in this race when he crossed the wire in 9th and was a very distant follower with a 102 speed rating. He throws his name in the hat here again Saturday hoping for a change of luck when jockey, M Zeus from Spain will take the mount up top for this race as they head out to the gates representing the Empire State Racing residency.
Post Position: 3
Horse/Odds: Banditfrank 5/2
Sire: Scratch Bred: FRANKEL (GB) x NUREYEV x ROBERTO
Jockey: A Jolly
Lining up at the gates will be the morning line favorite in this race. He is a 5 year old Bay horse that has had nineteen lifetime starts and has only missed the boards one time. He has been running a tough schedule of races this season of which most all of his starts have been at the Graded level. This horse is a G1 winner that has also earned his 1M badge along the way. His last trip to the track came on 10/19/2019 in Argentina going 12 furlongs in the G1, The Grand Carlos. He had a fairly flat trip in the race, but his performance was good enough to keep him on the boards when he crossed the wire in 3rd and was 2 ¼ lengths off at the wire. He ran a 109 speed rating that day, but this season we have seen him fire and put up better numbers. He gets jockey, A Jolly from Louisiana who will be in the saddle when they head out in the post parade representing the All-Stars Racing residency.
Post Position: 4
Horse/Odds: Dolly’s Boy 17/1
Jockey: GD Mate
This G1, 1M badge earning 6 year old Brown gelding picked up a nice G1 win back in February of this year in Victoria at a distance of 12 furlongs and a speed rating of 112 in the G1, John Scott Appreciation Stakes. However, since that big win he has failed this season to hit the boards again against Stakes company. His last trip out was in Paris on 11/03/2019 in a Listed Stakes, War Ransom Turf Challenge. He showed up way late to the wire back in 5th and struggled as he was over 12 lengths back. He is stepping back up against a G1 field of which one must question if he is prepared to take on this field? He will have jockey, GD Mate from New Zealand in the saddle who may need a heavy hand to keep this 6 year old in contention when they head out at post time to represent the Blazing Saddles residency.
Post Position: 5
Horse/Odds: Scaling Back 80/1
Jockey: Z Graves
This 3 year old Bay colt just broke his maiden back in June at a distance of 9.5 furlongs. After doing so he headed out in August of this year to travel 9.5 furlongs in a Listed Stakes, the Scab Sal Stakes in Wyoming where he crossed the wire in 6th and was over 11 lengths back when he crossed the wire hitting a triple digit speeding rating of 102 for the first time. He then went out in his most recent trip to the track to run on the dirt going 8.5 furlongs on 10/18/2019 in a $48,700/NW3L Allowance in California. His horse showed he did not care for the switch in surfaces and showed up 13th and was over 15 lengths back when he crossed the wire. Understandably the odds makers have chosen him to be the longest choice in this field. He will get the services of jockey, Z Graves from South Korea to take the ride with him to travel a distance of which this horse has never attempted in prior starts. They will head to the post representing the Queensland Racecourse residency at post time.
Post Position: 6
Horse/Odds: Absolute Beast 8/1
Sire: Honor Code
Jockey: MJ Kelly
This G2 badge earner is a 4 year old Brown gelding that picked up that badge back in July of this year in California going 12 furlongs in the G2, Dawn To Dusk Cup with a respectable 113 speed rating. He moved up to face G1 company in his two most recent outings, but failed to find the boards. His last outing came on 09/29/2019 in the G1, Classic Turf Stakes in New York at a distance of 12 furlongs where he showed up 5th in that race but was 13 lengths back when he crossed the wire. He gets the services of jockey, MJ Kelly to ride up top for this race who will need to find out of his horse a little extra in leg to keep his horse that likes roaming near the front into contention. They will head out to the gates on Saturday representing the Blazing Saddles residency.
Post Position: 7
Horse/Odds: Image Of War 9/1
Sire: War Front
Jockey: H Desitter
This 4 year old Bay gelding is a G2 winner from back in March of this year. Since that time he has failed to find the boards as he continues to face Graded company. His last outing was in Argentina on 10/19/2019 in the G1, The Grand Carlos where he crossed the wire in 5th and was 4 ¾ off when he crossed the wire with a 107 speed rating. This gelding has shown he has better runs in him and that he can put up better speed ratings. He will need to find those again when jockey, H Desitter takes to the irons to travel with this horse. If this jockey can pull out of this horse those better speed numbers we could see this horse back on the boards for this trip when the head out to the turf representing the Empire State Racing residency.

Horse/Odds: Sea The Indian 34/1
Sire: Sea The Moon
Jockey: G Arnold
This 3 year old Bay colt showed up with a GP badge when he ran back in June of this year in the G1, The Irish Derby in Ireland going a distance of 12 furlongs for the first time. Since this time he did hit the boards again on 09/15/2019 when he headed out in Paris for the G2, The O’Neal Stakes where he came in 3rd but was a disappointing 9 ¼ lengths back when he crossed the wire. His last outing came on 10/27/2019 when he headed to the turf in Victoria for the 12.5 furlong G1, The Vicky Derby. He once again faded back at the third call of this race which concerns me that we have seen such or similar fades like this in his last four outings. He gets jockey, G Arnold who will fly in from Japan to take the ride with this horse in this event. The jockey will need to attempt to find some extra fire in the legs of this horse to keep him in a competitive position when they head out to the gates representing the Empire State Racing residency.
Post Position: 9
Horse/Odds: Montflug 11/1
Jockey: T Ace
This 4 year old Bay colt found a new home when the owner had a good eye at the auctions sales back in May of 2018. This horse showed steady improvement over longer distances giving this horse and his owner a G2 and a Local Championship win along the way. This horse has shown that he can hit some nice triple digit speeds in his career, but in two of his last three races he has failed to find the triple digit mark of which could have found him a trip to the winner’s circle in a couple of Listed Stakes outings. His last trip to the track came at a distance of 13 furlongs in Ontario in a Listed Stakes run, the Creed Dixie Turf Stayer. He showed up with a speed rating of 98 that day which was good enough to cross the wire in 3rd and was 4 ½ lengths back. His owner has contracted with jockey, T Ace for this race who is familiar with this horse, although their last pairing together was unsuccessful. They will go out looking for redemption and to bounce back when they take to the turf representing the Hoosier Racing residency.
Post Position: 10
Horse/Odds: Yarnathon 14/1
Sire: Scratch Bred: SUNS OUT GUNS OUT x SINGSPIEL (IRE) x BUSTINO
Jockey: P Incay
This scratch bred 4 year old Bay colt is a G3 badge earner and that came in his last trip to the track. He went 12 furlongs in Kentucky on 10/06/2019 in the G3, The Sick No More Stakes where he showed up with a 107 speed rating and crossed the wire for a win after a big run after the third call of the race. He likes lingering mid-pack in his best outings and that is where jockey, P Incay from California will try to place him during this race. Although this colt has won his last two trips to the track, this jockey will need be looking to get a little extra out of this horse to keep him in contention for his first G1 outing. They will be heading out on Saturday to represent the Blazing Saddles residency.
Post Position: 11
Horse/Odds: Starveyor 18/1
Jockey: E Sharp
In twelve career starts this 3 year old Bay colt has hit the boards in nine of those trips to the track. He grabbed his G3, badge on 09/14/2019 at a distance of 12 furlongs in Surrey in the G3, Autumn Stakes. He put up a respectable 112 speed rating that day. After that race he came back to his most recent outing on 10/19/2019 in Argentina going 12 furlongs in the G1, The Grand Carlos. He faced several horses he will meet up with here again in Los Angeles. He hit the wire in 6th and was 5 lengths back. He will have jockey, E Sharp from Ohio coming in for the ride up top. This seasoned jockey will be looking to bring his front runner out for a clean trip and to find that speed he knows this horse has to work with when they head to the turf on Saturday to represent the East-West Connection residency.
Post Position: 12
Horse/Odds: Running On Evil 5/1
Sire: Scratch Bred: FRANKEL (GB) x CAERLEON x KRIS S.
Jockey: D Raymond
This 5 year old scratch bred is a prior G1, 1M badge earner that last ran on 11/02/2019 in the G1, Breeders’ Bowl Turf at a distance of 12 furlongs here in California. He drew a favorable post position in that race for his running style and lead the other horses up front where he likes to be until near the third call of the race of which he began to fade back against that rough and tumble crowd of horses. He crossed the wire in 12th and over 14 lengths back with a speed rating of 105. This horse’s owner makes the call to New York to contract jockey, D Raymond to ride his horse again. They have paired up in the past, so this jockey is familiar with this horses running style. He will need to bring a heavy whip and use it when they approach the third call in this race and not allow his horse to fade when they hit the turf representing the GR Simsters residency.
Post Position: 13
Horse/Odds: Tumeremo 32/1
Jockey: D Matas
A very familiar jockey, D Matas from Paris will take to the irons up top of the 3 year old Bay colt when they head out on Saturday. They paired up together in this horse’s last trip to the track. Back on 09/08/2019 this horse put up a nice effort with jockey, C Matas in the saddle in the G3, Prix De Loot Stakes in Paris at a distance of 14 furlongs. They crossed the wire in 3rd and were 3 ½ lengths back at the wire. In this horses last outing he stepped up in Class to run at the G1 level in Japan on 10/20/2019 in The Japanese Saint Legend. He showed up 4th at the wire and 8 ¾ lengths back with a 101 speed rating. Jockey, D Matas will need to find more out of his horse when they pair up here in California representing the Universal Racing Club.
Post Position: 14
Horse/Odds: Breaker Dawn 5/1
Sire: Dawn Approach
Jockey: J Ledwith
This 4 year old Bay colt is a G3 badge earner who comes to this race with a good amount of Graded experience under his belt. Back in August of this year he won the G3, Winchester Park Cup in Oklahoma. He also picked up a G3 win back in April in the CEO Classic in Kentucky. He has been running some good speed ratings this season, but failed to hit the boards in his last outing on 11/02/2019 going 12 furlongs here in California in the G1, Breeders Bowl Turf. That was a very tough field of horses to compete with and I feel he did well to hang with that crowd hitting the wire in 4th place. He gets a familiar jockey, J Ledwith from Paris to take the ride with him. I look for this horse to be in the mix when they come down the stretch representing Blazing Saddles residency.
**Skippy’s Watch List**
Break Dawn: Showed nice effort in the BB Turf against a tough field. Should be in the mix here.
Banditfrank: Should be a player for this one coming to the wire.
Starveyor: The 3 year olds got snubbed in the morning line, but he could be game.
**Tarton’s Long Shot**
Tumeremo: This 3 year old has been trying in past efforts. He goes off at 32/1 in the morning line and could just be a surprise to upset a few horses in this field. I will throw him on some of my exotic tickets and see what happens.
