The Elite Racing Club spends the week way down under in Christchurch,  New Zealand,  as they gather at Riccarton Racecourse for this month’s event,  the Fastnet Rock.  A promising field of nine freshman runners,  including five fillies,  will battle over eight and a half furlongs (or ~ 1700 meters for the locals) for the winners share of the $100,000 purse on tap.  The fine weather will last through the weekend,  so a firm turf course should be in order when they enter the starting gate.
.
The annual trainers’ race for club champion will come down to the final two events on the calendar,  with the current leader,  dontbetonme,  hanging on to a slim 3 point lead on jbcri09,  who maintains a 2 point margin on summerset,  while defending champ harrylan sits in 4th,  4 back of summerset and just 9 from possibly claiming back to back titles.
.
As for the horses,  our entry point leader is newfydowns’ GIVING SPIRIT,  one of the three stakes placed runners present;  dunnvilledowns sends out one of the two stakes winners in the field,  filly KURUZU KIREINA.  Summerset saddles our other stakes winner,  THE NINTH REALM,  another filly,  while larrcamp has the only three time winner going to the post,  BOREAL OWL,  yet another filly.  Jbcri09 continues the filly parade with QUEEN SIYOUNI,  and mightyforego has the other filly,  undefeated ELLIANZORA.  Defending champ harrylan saddles DUBAWI’s WELLS;  jb3commish has HOLY GHOST CROWN primed for an upset chance,  and finally,  the ever dangerous dontbetonme rounds out the field with claimer MEGA ERUPT.
.
Unfortunately,  the BTB still has the problems it has been facing the last month or so,  so please forgive the abbreviated write up as I try to make it easier for the editors to publish this piece.  Let’s take a look at the field and see what the numbers may suggest.
.
.
.
1
BOREAL OWL             KY     2F     larrcamp11             GD Mate         7/1
.
Stretch running filly makes her third straight stakes appearance.  Should save some ground from the fence,  stretches out in her first two trun attempt.  May be along for a minor share on top try.
.
.
2
MEGA ERUPT             SAF     2M     dontbetonme10         H Harzheim         9/1
.
Broke his maiden at this distance last out in his sixth try;   could’ve been had for his $40,000 tag.  Significant SP# improvement over prior run,  should be close to the pace setters here.  Barn is well known for putting over entries like these,  but leap from maiden claimer to stakes could be tough to make.
.
.
3
DUBAWI’S WELLS         ENG     2M     harrylanlow47             D Evans          4/1
.
Deep closer got up for the win second time over.  Also flashed huge SP# improvement over previous outing.  Gets more distance here,  which should suit his running style.  Co-favorite of the handicapper;  would not be a surprise.
.
.
4
HOLY GHOST CROWN         AUS     2M     jb3tackle             C Wyatt         8/1
.
Another stretch running colt,  who was a respectable 4th in his first stakes try last out at a mile.  Gets a little more ground in this heat,  could surprise for a minor share with further improvement.
.
.
5
ELLIANZORA             FR     2F     mightyforego19         J Wilson         5/1
.
Striking filly is a perfect two for two coming into this.  Should be in the second flight,  looking to get the jump on the late closers.  Already beat the boys in her debut,  solid shot to do it again as the co-third choice on the morning line.
.
.
6
KURUZU KIREINA         JPN     2F     villagedowns             P Harzheim         8/1
.
Was gaining late in her most recent start,  getting 3rd in a listed stakes after a thrashing in a G2 try.  One of only two prior stakes winners in this group,  could loom large in the lane on best effort.  Can’t wait for the track announcer to say this one’s name.
.
.
7
GIVING SPIRIT             NZ     2M     mummerdowns         J Stivers         7/1
.
Was a tenacious front running second in a sprint stakes last out after a maiden win.  Looks like one of the main speed here,  but stretches out and will need to prove he can hold on down the straight and end his “seconditis” affliction.
.
.
8
QUEEN SIYOUNI         FR     2F     jbcri9                 M Zeus             4/1
.
Speedy filly will be on the motor from this outside post.  Will have to contend with GIVING SPIRIT on the front end,  but the handicapper likes her chances,  making her the co-favorite at 4/1 on the tote board.
.
.
9
THE NINTH REALM         IRE     2F     rac4                 R Dowell         5/1
.
Our final filly is our other prior stakes winner.  Fair 5th in a G3 in her last outing.  Deep closer should appreciate the extra distance in this route,  could eat them all up in the stretch run.
.
.
.
Good luck everybody,  and may they all come home fast,  safe and sound.
