Finish at the Speed of Light

Light Spectrum had won five in a row before stumbling out of the gate and looking slightly lame at the finish of her previous race. Trainer blaster2 must have some magic in those hands as she looked more like the five in a row horse today in the Bickerknocker Grade Three Handicap here at Saratoga. The race was a $150k turf stakes race for three year old and up fillies and mares. It was run under sunny autumn skies and held a few surprises.

I want to start off this review by apologizing to trainer slappy who also showed some magic by bringing longshot filly Hmmm home in third place. This was the horse whose presence in this Handicap I so vociferously questioned in my preview of the race. Guess what…I was wrong. Sorry about that.

Light Spectrum has now won 11 of 25 races and more impressively has won six of her last seven. Five of those have been over a 103 speed figure as well. The British bred Diesis filly is fairly lightly raced and may well be winning races long after her peers have retired to the breeding shed.

Catonahottinroof and Hmmm broke out to an early lead and Light Spectrum stalked them four lengths back. “Cat” hung in the entire race and lead at the top of the stretch with Hmmm following and Light Spectrum making an appearance on her shoulder. At that point, Light Spectrum swept up the rail and finished ahead by a length easily.

Blaster2’s filly Light Spectrum looks like she will be fun to watch for a long time to come.
