DPCD IX Super Gold G-3

A solid field of eight lines up for the G-3 DPCD IX Super Gold Stakes.  Two year old fillies will race six furlongs over the firm turf course for a purse of $500,000.  G-2 winner Texas Sky looks to add to her resume while the rest of the field is looking for their first graded score.

1 – Texas Sky (5/2) drops back in distance after an eleventh place finish in the G-1 Breeder’s Bowl Juvenile Fillies Turf.  She previously won the G-2 Spring Hill Stakes at a mile earning her career high sp of 88.  Sprinting she sports a 4-2-1-1 record, including the Fillies Big ‘un Stakes back in May.  She’s lead a first call in every start.  Texas Sky is a Galileo filly out of the G-1 winning b-grade mare Saracen.  Saracen was a very speedy daughter of Storm Cat x Mr. Prospector.  Her first foal was certainly a disappointment, winning only once in eighteen career starts.

2 – Tiger Baby (11/1) makes her stakes debut in this tough spot.  A winner of only two races in eight starts, this filly’s best run was her last a 6.5 furlong NW2L allowance score in which she ran a 77sp.  A daughter of the d-grade Run Softly mare Ignorantly the Bro, Tiger Baby is by Tiger Hill , a sire of moderate sim use.  Ignorantly the Bro has already produced two stakes winners, one graded from eight foals.  Interestingly the last four foals are full siblings and both stakes winners are from that group.

3 – Queen Mary (6/1) is ambitiously placed in what is only her third start.  This filly won first out going seven furlongs with an 80sp.  She was then thrown straight into G-2 company finishing a well beaten seventh in the G-2 Rockefeller Stakes.  She’s had a bit of a freshening since that start.  Certainly a filly bred to be a stakes horse, she is a daughter of Henrythenavigator.  Henry’s first foals started like gangbusters last year and included five graded winners of 14 graded stakes.  His second crop has been considerably quieter with only two stakes winners so far.  Queen Mary is out of the e-grade Victory Gallop mare Winning Move.  Winning Move was the only stakes winner from six foals for her dam, g-grade Seattle Slew mare Burnt Seattle.

4 – Doodle B (16/1) is another filly with only a single win to her credit.  Started with a fifth place finish on dirt, this filly switched to the turf for her second start and responded with a win at six furlongs with a 73sp.  Her next two starts were stakes runs, a fourth in the G-3 Palms Outward Stakes then eighth in the Not Bad For a Girl Stakes.  Doodle B is by Bernardini out of the f-grade Dixieland Band mare Corn Whiskey Run.  Two half siblings have accounted for a single win in 21 combined starts.

5 – Club de Mambo (2/1) is our favorite here off a lifetime high sp of 95 in her last start.  First or second seven times in nine starts, this mare has two G-3 seconds to her credit in the Miesque and Cornwall Stakes, at seven and five furlongs respectively.  Club de Mambo dropped down in class last out to win the Magic Auror Stakes at today’s distance of six furlongs.  This filly is one of eight stakes winners for her sire Red Clubs from 90 runners over the past three seasons.  She is out of the g-grade Kingmambo mare Dancing Queeny a producer of one graded winner from seven foals.

6 – Lose the Dollar (5/1) also has nine runs on the season, although she has only won twice in that time.  Her best finish was a third place run in the G-1 More Glare Stakes in September, where she ran an 88sp.  She attempted to route in her last two starts, finishing third in the Provellian Challenge Stakes and unplaced in an allowance effort, recording lower sps in both starts.  The hope here is the turn back to sprinting will bring her back to top form.  Lose the Dollar is a Shamardal filly out of Make the Dollar, a g-grade Ivan Denisovich mare.

7 – Light Arrow (7/1) is a scratch bred filly by A.P. Arrow x Fantastic Light x Cherokee Run.  She is her sire’s second leading earner from his first crop, behind graded winner Reconnected Again.  This filly has ten runs already as a two year old with two wins and six additional finishes on the board.  Her best race was a second place finish in the G-3 Park Place Stakes in October, running an 85sp.  Since then she was second in an open allowance at 6.5 furlongs and eighth at today’s six furlong distance in the Spring Nugget Stakes.

8 – Lettre Persanne (8/1) has been a transformed filly since being switched to the turf, with a record of 5-3-1-1 after going 0 for 3 on the dirt.  She broke her maiden in her first turf start at today’s six furlong distance, then took three starts to win a NW2L allowance two back.  Her last race was her best, a win in the King Puppet Stakes at seven furlongs with an 85sp.  Her second highest sp was also recorded at a sprint distance, an 82 in a 6.5 furlong race.  Lettre Persanne is a Lion Heart filly out of g-grade Red Ransom mare Red Sunday.  Lettre Persanne is her first foal.

The play – it’s hard to look past Texas Sky in this field.  She is the only filly with genuine early speed and looks to control the race from the get go.  Lettre Persanne is on the upswing and may have enough to catch our first choice today.  We’ll choose Queen Mary for third, considering her pedigree suggests an improvement is possible and her freshness will be an asset against fillies with many more starts on the year.

Good luck to all!
