Efficy Special showcases two year old fillies

Stakes racing returns to Virginia this weekend with the second annual running of the Efficy Special.  The race, for two year old fillies runs over six furlongs of turf, for a $35000 purse.  It should be a nearly perfect fall day, and the track will be rated as firm for the event.  Tallredhead set the benchmark for the race in last’s year’s inaugural running, posting a 80.6 speed enroute to a two and a quarter length wire to wire victory.  This year’s running draws six young hopefuls, several of them stepping up to stakes competition for the first time.  Oddsmakers just threw up their hands, rating the entire field between 3/1 and 6/1 odds.  Payouts won’t break the bank, but with the relatively long odds favorites at 3/1, there could be some mioney to be made.

PP 1) Corinthian Chimes(KY)  Sired by Corinthian, Trained by teebone10.  Corithian Chimes makes her third career start in this race.  After a well run victory in the mud in her maiden debut, she followed up with a mildly disastrous run in the Buckeye Debutante last outing, trailing the leaders home by ten and a half lengths in an eleventh place finish.  On the heels of that, her connections switch her to turf for the first time, to attempt to regain some of the poise she had in her first outing.  Her nice performance in the mud in her first shows that she may take well to the softer surface, though her bredding does not really have the data to approve or deny that guess.  She showed an exceelent close in her first run, which would hold her in good stead in this front loaded field, but she’s going to need to muster alot more speed than she’s shown so far to be a serious threat here.

PP 2) What Goes Up(SAF)  Sired by Newton(IRE), Trained by poowillck.  What Goes Up makes her sixth trip to the gate here, having never finished worse than second in her first five, with three wins and two places.  Her last run was an open allowance at this distance on dirt in Alabama, where she gave up a length and a quarter lead late, before settling for second by a length.  This will be her first try on turf.  She has plenty of turf upside in her pedigree and if it runs true, she shouldn’t have any problems on the grass.  She’s a front runner and she’s proven she can more than hold her own in an early speed battle, and that is quite likely what she will run into here.  If her speeds translate over to the softer turf surface, she should be the one to beat here.

PP 3) Dootsin Street(KY)  Sired by Street Sense, Trained by cut2004.  Dootsin Street is the most experienced filly in the field, relatively speaking, making her seventh career start.  She comes into this one riding a four race winning streak, including her first stakes win in her last outing.  That race was a dirt stakes at this distance where she dominated a short field of four by just over two lengths.  This will be her first run on the grass.  Her lineage, while not the perfect turf lines has plenty of turf upside scattered throughout.  If her performance in the mud is any indication, the softer surface here shouldn’t be a problem for her.  She has shown a very good short close in her previous races, only getting into trouble when she tries to challenge the early speed.  She likely to find herself treading a fine line in this one contending with some very good early speed.  She could find herself out a bit deeper than she is used to at the half, which may challenge her close.  The biggest question here, I think, is how she will respond to turf.

PP 4) Taking Your Time(AUS)  Sired by Fastnet Rock(AUS), Trained by corza2.  Taking Your Time jumps from straight into stakes competition after convincing winning her maiden debut.  That race was an MSW at this distance on turf, on a tough Kentucky track, where she took a packed field wire to wire to win by a length.  She is only one of two entries in this field that has turf experience and she showed good speed on the surface in her first outing.  She came out of the gate like a rocket in her last start, piling up a big lead early that she carried well into the stretch.  With a lead of over three lengths going into the stretch, we may not have seen everything this filly has to offer in her first start.  Turf experience is a big plus, too, as we already know that this filly can handle turf well.  Think she’s worth a second look from the handicappers here at her 7/2 odds.

PP 5) Magic Hands(KY)  Sired by Majestic Warrior, Trained by rubiano00.  Magic Hands steps to the track for her forth career start in this race.  She won in her maiden debut, and while she has shown some decent speed in her next two starts, she didn’t show any late jump, finishing three or more lengths out in those two starts.  This will be her first start on turf, perhaps an attempt by her connections to shake things up a little bit.  She came out of the gate fast in her first two starts, fighting a pitched battle most of the way throughout.  She was able to hold on in the slightly shorter race, but gave up a lead late in her start at this distance.  She opted for a bit slower start in her last, but showed little inclination to close much ground in the second half.  Nothing in her pedigree really screams “turf runner”, and looking at the field here, if she tries to challenge the front runners here, she’s likely to come out on the short end.

PP 6) Rainbow Serpent(IRE)  Sired by Montjeu(IRE), Trained by wistful0.  Rainbow Serpent will make sixth career start here, nad her second at stakes level.  She made her first try in a mile stakes on turf last outing where she trailed the leader home by twelve lengths.  Four of five starts have been on turf, and she has displayed a comfort level with the surface.  She’s been doing her running from the mid pack, but has been at her best when she can stay within a length or so of the leaders when they hit the half post.  If she gets out much deeper than that, her close has been spotty, and she has had trouble bringing it back in the second half.  With the good early speed here, compared with the speed she’s shown, she could be quite a bit farther out then a length at the half in this time.  Unless she’s hiding some breakout speed we haven’t seen, I can’t really recommend her here.
