The Eastwood Grade III

The sun is shining, there are just a few clouds in the sky, and everyone is coming out here to New Jersey for this special Grader III race we have here today.  The Eastwood will draw a total of 7 horses into the race today.  These girls, all three year old and up, look to capture a good chunk of that 150,000 purse when they run the mile and sixteenth on the Firm Turf today.  So without further wait, lets meet today’s ladies.

PP.1   London Eye

This five year old mare looks to take the rest of the field, and win her first graded race of her career.  She would be one for one in graded attempts if that would happen as this will be her first graded try.  After making the switch to dirt a while back, she made the switch back to the turf two races ago.  With little success in the win column, the girl has been running SP’s of 105 and 98 in her last two races.  Owner blueriband will look for jockey G. Anderson to do his best, and maybe raise his 12.2 winning percentage.  This girl is a 3/1 shot in today’s race.

PP.2  Jitterbug Girl

This four year old girl looks to make it two in a row in stakes company as she made the switch back to the turf in her last race.  After posting two 3rd place finishes on the dirt, this girl cam back with a 101 SP first place finish on the turf last time out.  This girl has been in and out of Graded company on the dirt in her career, and will look for her third overall graded win in today’s race.  Sitting at 4/1, B. Heffernan will try to do the trick for owner tihsho in today’s race.  Heffernan holds a career winning percentage of 9.3 percent.

PP.3   Shiney Jade

This four year old mare will try an attempt at graded company after not hitting the board in her last five races.  She tried a switch to dirt two races back, with little success.  With a 10th place finish, and 88 SP, she made the switch to turf in her last race, and again came up with nothing in an NW2N allowance, earning 6th place and again running an 88 SP.  Owner sonfsham is hoping an attempt at Graded company will boost his horses SP, and maybe get her to run a little faster.  Jockey P. Perabo will get the ride in today’s race atop Shiney Jade.  Perabo currently has a 6.4 winning percentage, while Shiney Jade is sitting at 15/1.

PP.4   Skeet Shot

This six year old mare has only one graded attempt in her life.  That came in a Grade II 4th place finish where she ran a 99 SP.  Since then, it has been all allowance and listed stakes for this girl, and she has had mixed success.  Struggling to keep SP’s in the upper 90’s and low 100’s, this girl and owner chilimac both know that it can be done if she wants to run.  This girl put a string of two wins together earlier this year where she ran a 104 SP, and a 108 SP in back to back races while winning both.  She will get jockey M. Harrison atop her today.  Harrison owns a 10.1 winning percentage, while Skeet Shot sits at 4/1.

PP.5   Bernstein Song

The long shot in today’s race is coming off of a Grade III 2nd place finish in the Si’ Senorita Special her last time out.  This three year old mare out of the tahoe stable will look for her first Graded win in her young career.  After making the switch back to turf two races ago, with little success on the dirt, she ran a 91 SP, and finished 6th in a listed stakes.  Then she comes out and runs a shocking 96 SP in her last race to take second.  Her owner, and jockey, M. Salisbury, will look for SP’s to continue to rise in today’s race.  Salisbury owns a 9.6 winning percentage while Bernstein Song is sitting at 25/1.

PP.6   Alpine Frost

As we start to near the end here, we come across this four year old mare out of the imatiger stable.  This young girl looks to continue success on the turf, and maybe even bring home her first graded win.  After starting her career on the dirt, she mad the switch to turf 5 races in, and won her first ever turf race.  Everyone knew she loved the turf after winning her fourth race in a row after making the switch.  She has not run on the dirt since.  Her last two races have both been in listed stakes.  She has plenty to show for it also as she earned a 1st and 2nd place finish in those races while running SP’s of 105, and 102.  Jockey R. Case will get the ride today on Alpine Frost.  Case owns a career winning percentage of 17.0 percent, while Alpine Frost is currently sitting at 7/2.

PP.7   Giant’s Treasure

The favorite in today’s race is a four year old mare out of the futurestar stable.  This girl is not afraid to run with the big girls in Graded company as she has attempted the feat eight times in her 21 career races.  She too started her career on the dirt, and has not run there since the switch to turf.  Her last three races have shown mixed results as she has run in two graded races, and a listed stakes.  Not much luck had came in the two graded races where she ran SP’s of 98, and 94.  She earned 7th and 11th in those races before going to a listed stakes last time out.  In that race she ran a nice 103 SP in a 2nd place effort.  Jockey J. Benisz will look to raise his already high 25.5 winning percentage when he rides this 5/2 favorite in the thirteenth race today.

It looks as though this could be a very tough race for any of these girls or ladies to win.  I think it will all depend on the horse and how it wants to run today.  Take Giant’s Treasure for example.  She has been running in graded company with little success, but not only can she be competitive there, she could win there if she would allow herself to run those 100 plus SP’s in the Graded races instead of the listed stakes.  If it were up to me to make a bet I would go with these three in no particular order

1. Bernstein Song—For all of you betters out there, this could be an interesting trifecta if it would happen due to this girl right here.  The long shot will hit the board, I am calling it.

2. Alpine Frost—Due to the recent performance of this one

3. Giant’s Treasure—Due to the experience of running in Graded Races.
