HERNANDO TO WIN THE WAR OF THE TALES

HERNANDO TO WIN THE WAR OF THE TALES

Saturday the 20th of March 2010 sees Grade III racing at New South Wales in the form of The Canterbury Tales Grade III, a race for 3yo’s over the flying 6 furlongs. A field of eleven classy runners will do battle so let’s check them out;

1 – WHATHAPPENSIN VEGAS – add –  11/1 – This will be only the 6th race start for this Elusive Quality colt who thus far has 1 win and 2 placings to his credit including a head 2nd at stakes level and an eye catching 4th at Grade III level last time out, both over 6.5 furlongs. He is also the only horse in the race who has reached the elusive 100 SP#. Gives the impression he may want it slightly longer but is capable and will be rattling home.

2 – ROZELLE LIGHTINING – bjbandit03 – 8/1 – A winner of 3 of his 6 starts and has never finished out of the top three. Has won from 5.5 to 7.5 furlongs and drops back from a 3rd over a mile at stakes level last start. Is likely to be up front early and will need to be at his best when the whips come out down the stretch. Looks tested.

3 – HERNANDO’S WAR – mikejoyce – 9/2 – A top class son of Hernando who has won 6 from 8 so far in his career and amassed over $700,000 in prize money. has won his last 5 including a Grade 1 last time out over this distance. Will look to lead from pillar to post and will take some running down. Top chance in this.

4 – BLOWOUT THECANDLES – vertain7 – 10/1 – Won at this Grade and distance early on as a 2yo and has ran home well in his last two starts at Grade 1 level also over this trip. Looks to be begging for more ground and will be afforded no mistakes in this company.

5 – RAOUL DUKE – cornelius – 11/1 – Raced well as a 2yo. Hung on for a fading 3rd over 7 furlongs in a stakes race 2 starts back in his first 3yo outing and then failed over a mile in Grade 1 company. Will appreciated the drop in distance, but may find it tough trying to lead this field.

6 – FREYR – metfield – 8/1 – Has ultra consistant form and is a winner of 7 from 9. Has won his last 4 including a stakes race last time out over 6.5 furlongs. This son of El Prado is another one who likes to lead which may not be ideal in this race. It’s hard to fault winning form and this guy definitely deserves to be here. A bold showing would not surprise.

7 – SOMEBEACHSOMEPLACE – 911– 10/1 – Won at this level and distance as a  2yo and was placed in similar company at his only 3yo outing. A son of Falbrav who likes to race just off the pace and finish over the top of them, a trait that may be in his favour here. Will be better fo last start and could surprise here.

8 – POOCH BG – geegee – 9/2 – Winner of 8 from 11 and ultra consistant, also never missing a top 3 finish.  This Roses In May colt will be right on the leaders hammer as they swing for home and will punce on any opportunity. Already a veteran of 3 starts as a 3yo has proven he can perform at this level. A solid hope.

9 – COCONUT TELEGRAPH – mtk76stc – 12/1 – A solid allowance performer who makes his stakes debut here today. Has won his last two at this trip in easier company. This son of Smart Strike may just find this lot a little hot for him yet. Prefer to wait this time.

10 – ISLE OF CAPRI – sportnwood – 6/1 – A son of Marcus Andronicus who really sprouts wings at the end of his races. Was only beaten 1 1/2 lengths in Grade 1 company last start when finishing 4th over this distance. Looks like he would prefer a longer trip but may be suited by a fast pace here. Definite place chance.

11 – EIGHT ONE FIVE – viceregent – 11/1 – A consistant placegetter at top level as a 2yo over slightly longer trips who is yet to recapture that form as a 3yo. Faded late at this level last time out over 6.5 furlongs and won the start before in a low level restricted allowance. Other look more appealling in this one.

A quality event all in all and in summary I’ll go for 3-6-10-8.

Good Luck and Good Punting.
