Sorry, folks, the choice was this. Pay Randy Sterling and Mason Blue overtime money to dissect this race or leave it completely uncovered. We probably made a bad choice. But your Black Type Bugler always makes every effort to cover all the big races. With the BTB on it’s annual winter break and a lot of reporters unavailable this holiday season, it was Randy and Mason or nothing. I’d say “enjoy,” but I know it will be more like “endure.”
Mason: Sure was nice of the BTB people to pay us overtime to talk about The Christmas Classic. It’s like getting paid for having fun!
Randy: Are they paying us by the horse? There are sixteen in here.
Mason: No. But we do get to go back to the buffet again.
Randy: The chicken was very good. And I missed dessert last time. The New York Cheese cake looked good! OK, let’s get rolling.
Mason: Post position order?
Randy: I guess so. You start.
Mason: Nekkid Mikey Kingman trains the rail horse. Summer Wine looks like a playa here, just like his trainer. Throws big figs often and a proven graded winner. Could upset the apple cart at 14-1.
Randy: Summer Wine ran in this race last year, if you want to call it that. You know, it’s hard to train a horse from your bed, much less someone else’s. Maybe if Kingman actually went to barn in the morning once in awhile this colt would be more consistent.
Mason: Next is the favorite, Kissin Streetcry. Last year’s Bluegrass Derby winner. Approaching five million in career earnings. Throws HUGE speed numbers. Ran a 119 in the Cal Cap last winter. He’s a brute.
Randy: This IS a marvelous horse. Or should I say WAS. You’d think Doc could afford to stop pulling teeth with all the money this horse has made. But he’s not as good as he was last year and earlier this season and is certainly not worth the price.
Mason: Thunder Cracked is from the Super Stables outfit. They have a TON of really nice horses running this weekend. This one was second in the Florida Derby, raced in all three legs of the Triple Crown and is a grade I winner.
Randy: What’s with these people? We saw them put three fillies in over their head in the Penn Distaff which we covered. Now they enter this colt in an impossible spot. He should be racing in nw4 in West Virginia.
Mason: Black Label has Ol Sukie Jones all cranked up for The Christmas Classic. His last two weren’t great but he has worked lights out prepping for this since then. Drilled a mile in 1:36 last Monday. And he looked awesome winning that grade I in New York three back.
Randy: Yes, he did. As you’ll undoubtedly recall, I picked him that race. He did look good. And he loves this track. Has raced great over it and, as you mentioned, tossed that bullet on Monday. But he was horribly outrun in those last two and I have no confidence that things are fixed. Pass.
Mason: Kiddman Stables’ familiar Blue and Yellow colors will be carried into battle by his Old Gold D’oro. The striking gray warrior arrives fresh off an allowance tally in Washington and he earned his GP rating while running second in a British Columbian grade II earlier this year.
Randy: This horse is a claimer. ‘Nuff said. Next.
Mason: Lucky Stables’ Lucky Dixie is next. Won the Grade III Full Island in Jersey last summer and has been competitive in several other graded events.
Randy: I like this horse’s trainer. She does a fine job, not only with this horse, but all her stock. I just think Lucky Dixie is in too tough. Nice horse. Wrong spot.
Mason: Tara’s Temper is the longest shot (37-1) in the race. He’s won two straight and looked very good last time out winning a stake in Dubai and defeating a nice field while posting a 107 speed figure.
Randy: He won’t finish last. But that’s as much of an endorsement as I can give the former claimer.
Mason: Walking Disaster is anything but. He’s won two graded races this year including a grade I. Shows speed figs that are as good as any. Sunshine Stables has a nice one on their hands.
Randy: This horse likes it up front. He’s got way too many solid closers to hold off to last on the lead. I might bet him if they paid lap money.
Mason: Shoot For The Gold is another Super entry. He’s been racing in tough company lately and holding his own. Finished second in a pair of grade II events. Outside chance.
Randy: He’s done well in allowances and restricted races. And lately he’s been pretty sharp in graded company. But he’s never won a graded race and I can guarantee you that whoever wins this will have won a graded stake before Saturday.
Mason: CO-second choice at 6-1 is Wayne’s Alydar Again. A four time graded stake winner in 2009 including the G-1 Windy City Gold Cup. Second in the BB Classic. Major player, without doubt.
Randy: Very classy horse. Good as any here and way better than most. His main concern is traffic. Coming from way back, you need a little luck. How lucky will he be?
Mason: My favorite trainer in the world sends out Ghostzigger, a well bred colt if ever there was one. He hasn’t won a stake yet, but he might some day. And his trainer is a GREAT GUY! Did I say that already?
Randy: The guy sends you a dozen golf balls and you do a 30 second commercial for him? Sheeesh. The horse sucks. End of story.
Mason: Listening has finished second or third in nine graded stakes. He went over the million mark in career earnings last time out and is trained by my second favorite trainer. I give him a big shot as CO-second choice.
Randy: Which part of ” I can guarantee you that whoever wins this will have won a graded stake before Saturday.” did you not understand?
Mason: Worldwide Stables’ Elusive High is very sharp right now. He’s been first or second five times in a row.
Randy: Nice colt. But not fast enough. Another time, another place. Hurry up, I’m getting hungry.
Mason: Rock And Fire is another really sharp colt. The four year old is versatile and his speed numbers are consistently high. Upsetter?
Randy: I can see this colt continuing to improve for his talented and colorful trainer. But we’re talking NOW. I don’t think he’s good enough to win right NOW. Are we done yet?
Mason: Next is URC’s Chief Account. He looked good winning a pair of 9.5f dirt events (one allowance, one stake) in Denmark before being outrun in the Grade III Stubborn Pheasant in New York last time out.
Randy: I didn’t pick him last time out. I predicted he’d finish 10th and he did. I predict he won’t win here.
Mason: Last but not least comes Lenny’s The Kid Stu. This multiple grade I winner has been prepped for the DPCC with careful precession. Looks all set to score. My pick to click!
Randy: Do I have to pick a horse, too?
Mason: Yes.
Randy: OK, I pick this one. Let’s eat!
