Lightfly’s Desert hangs on at the wire to win the North The Baby Bonanza
Lightfly’s Desert ran a solid effort, holding off a late threat by the favorite, and outlasting the rest to capture this week’s North The Baby Bonanza here in Virginia. For those intrepid bettors who took the chance, he paid a nice $8.40 $4.60 $3.00 on a $2 bet across the board, generating a nice profit. This makes him undefeated in his first two career starts, with earnings of $42660, and he will be a horse to watch. Speeds were on the slow side in this one, but it was an exciting race, and nicely run by the top three.
The majority of this one was a speed duel between Lightfly’s Desert and Voss Hollandia. The broke together from the gate, and quickly put over a length between themselves and the rest of the field. Into the stretch, there wasn’t a quarter length between them, as they fought for any advantage they could find. Voss Hollandia claimed the early advantage, and he gamely held on to it right up to about a third of the way down the stretch. You could see him begin to tire though, and Lightfly’s Desert swept past, not looking back and driving for the wire. Wigdan was closing hard, coming from three and a quarter down at the half, but he couldn’t catch the leader before the wire, settling for second place, a hard closing three quarters of a length back. Voss Hollandia hung on for third, one and three quarters out at the wire, but still well ahead of the rest of this short field.
