Great Win – The Rest Trailed

Welcome back to the review of the Wayward Member Special stakes here at Queensland and it was another good race for the 2yo’s over 6 furlongs on the firm turf track here.

SPINITAGAINSAM(KY) got the money here today with a great run by both horse and jockey T Cox.  Was slow out of the gates but settled quickly running near the rear of the field early on.  Only a short race so jockey and horse made their move quickly edging up to 4th and then 2nd by the 3rd call.  After that it was all over as he hit his stride and won by 3/4 length a career best speed rating of 86.  Perfect run race really which was also his first win at Stakes level after a few tries previously.  Congratulations and don’t spend all that money at once!  On to bigger things with this one you would think.

STC WOLF(IN) was in next coming from the rear of the field.  Speed of 84 he crossed just under a length behind the winner after trailing him through the field.  He didnt come through the field as quick though and really only made his strong run right at the end when he was never going to catch the winner.  Still a good run – probably looking for some extra ground at the end.

MONSTERS INC(AUS) in the favourite and my pick finished third for local Qld trainer michaelb.  Didnt really hit his stride and the top speed of 90 that he posted 2 races back. Still a good speed at 82 though after leading for much of the race but just couldnt find that extra gear at the end.

REHEDA RUN(IRE) was fourth across the line in what was another good and consistent run from him.  He also came from the rear of the field but didnt have the pace to match it with the leaders.  Speed of 80 shows he can definitely run but will need to find some extra oommff to continue at this level and win.

WILDLY OPERATIC(ENG) ran a wild race jumping and running in 2nd last position for much of the race.  Was flying at the end but ran out of distance and really started his run way too late. Still finished fifth across the line though and just ITM. “Id blame the jockey for that” said local Qld trainer k0dy and in fact those comments alone started some sort of fist fight behind the stables between trainer and jockey.  The horse of course couldn’t stand by and jumped in to help his trainer against jockey P Kays.  All this is rumour of course but I did get it from a good source.

INSIDE EDITION(KY) was the third local Qld entrant, first mare and sixth across the line. Confused?  Jumped last and stayed last until midway through the race when she decided she may as well move up to 8th place which is where she was at the third call.  Not wanting to come near last she did move up to sixth across the line but was just outside of getting any cash for her trainer Nextbonus (stable aces1211).  Nevertheless the trainer fined her the race entry fee and she will have to work that off over the next couple of weeks before she races again.  Who says trainers are nice…?

SEMPER FORTIS(KY) came in seventh across the line after jumping well and leading early on.  It was his first run on a firm turf track so not a bad effort but did fade again at the end there. Still as you will see from the owners comments below there is a very good reason as why he faded here and is looking for better things to come. Now if you read my initial write up of this race you will have seen that I did ask for any comments about your horse and trainer angellic2 did just that sending me a message through the forums and giving us some great detail about their entry here.  Below is a direct quote of that message:

“Firstly thank you for your time in writing these articles.  Its been along time since i have had a stakes runner.  I took 2 years off the game and came back and all of a sudden my horses were all donkeys and its been a struggle to build up the team again.
Just a little background on Semper Fortis is latin for “always courageous”.  I have been naming all my new horses with latin phrases, just something different this time around.
Semper Fortis is by far and away my most promising 2yo, his mother Prill was a G3 winner and also placed 2nd in a G1 as a 2yo.  Semper Fortis like his mother will be much better suited to Dirt but after the 3rd place on a wet track on turf i felt like he deserved one run on a dry turf track just to see what he can do.  So im not expecting too much and im pretty sure this will be his last run on turf unless he performs a miracle.
The only other thing to note is im sure he will get to a mile.  Prill preferred around the 8-9 furlong, so i have every confidence this boy will be around his best 7-8 furlongs as E Dubai should give him a bit more speed.  Last start he came off a 2 1/2 month break, and i only ran him at .90 just to get his race legs back, so i was quite happy with the run and that probably explains him fading at the end.  He bounced back quickly after that run but i wont be running him all out this week as i think i have better plans coming up for him in his next two starts.”

And that folks probably explains why he was fading today.  Plus we have got a great insight into how this trainer both feels about this horse and how they are thinking of running him in the future.

The last two entries in were CLEAR MANIFESTO(JPN) and O’REILLY OF COLAC(NZ) who couldn’t put it together today.

Thanks again for your comments angellic2 and I hope more of you will send through some comments about your entries in the future as it does make the articles more worthwhile reading with some great thoughts on how other trainers train their runners. Now I do get paid some breeding credits for this article so whatever I get paid for this one today I will send through to you angellic2 for the lengthy review of your horse that you sent through. If the powers that be decide to pay extra credits they are all yours!!! (Hopefully the editor reads this bit 🙂 )  Thanks again for your thoughts and hope to see you all back again next week.
