Camlaw Stakes Attracts 14
Welcome to the Camlaw Stakes in Sweden where we have a Grade II race over one mile and one sixteenth on the fast dirt track. This race is for the up and coming champions in our 2yo fillies and the purse is a very decent $250,000.
1 QUEEN ESTHER(KY)
Owner: bearpride
Record: 3-1-1-0
Earnings: $32,310
Jockey: L Ratzlaff
Odds: 15/1
Queen Esther out of Indian Charlie x Not For Love x Wild Again. Indian Charlie has sired one Stakes winner so far this year so the potential is there. Three races in her short career and got her debut win last time out over 7 furlongs in a Maiden race. Good speed rating of 81 and was her best run to date. In fact she has been improving with each race coming from the rear to mid to finish fast down the straight suggesting she may well like the extra distance here in this one. Big jump in class from the Maiden though and will have to prove she deserves to be here.
2 MOUNTAIN WEST(KY)
Owner: 1stclass
Record: 4-2-2-0
Earnings: $52,740
Jockey: M Mason
Odds: 10/1
Out of Gone West x Mountain Cat x Jade Hunter. Gone West is a proven sire of stakes winners with a total of 4 winners so far this year. Mountain West has four races to date with her best run speed wise coming on a good dirt track rather than the fast track we have here today. In saying that, she has two wins, in her maiden on debut run as well as last time out in the Repulsively Pop Bonanza stakes race featuring a speed rating of 77. she may well struggle with the distance here based on her short racing history and for that reason I would look elsewhere for the winner.
3 REPEAT PERFORMANCE(KY)
Owner: metallinut
Record: 5-1-2-0
Earnings: $241,860
Jockey: P Jones
Odds: 5/1
Bred out of Awesome Again x Secretariat x Buckpasser. Awesome again is another impressive sire this year boasting 5 Stakes winners so far. Has had a very good run including a second place finish in the G2 Vermont BB Juvenile Filly and then another in the G1 Hoserhead Juvenile Fillies. Her last run in the G1 Getaway Stakes was over 7 furlongs, the furtherest she has run to date which resulted in a fifth place finish and fading with a speed rating of 86. She is posting good speeds but is tending to fade as the distance gets longer. Another one with a big question mark on whether she can make the distance here. She is the favourite on the tote but I would suggest again look elsewhere…
4 AUTHORIZED STRIKE(ENG)
Owner: lgbost9y
Record: 7-1-2-3
Earnings: $40,619
Jockey: W Turnbull
Odds: 10/1
Authorized Strike(ENG) is out of Authorized x Smart Strike x El Prado(IRE). Authorized in his debut year as a sire has bred 2 Stakes winners to date. Authorized Strike has had 7 runs already for only the one win over 8 furlongs in a Maiden in July. Has had a third place finish over 8 furlongs also next up in The Jaded Bonanza stakes. That was followed up by another third place finish in an Allowance race over 8 furlongs again. She can definitely run the distance and she is posting respectable speeds. At odds of 10/1 is probably worth throwing some money on her as she could well challenge for a place here.
5 BLOWN DEADLINE(KY)
Owner: billzpaid5
Record:3-2-0-1
Earnings: $58,456
Jockey: J Jacobsson
Odds: 11/1
Out of Giant’s Causeway(IRE) x A.P. Indy x Cahill Road. Giant’s Causeway(IRE), a well known sire now for many years has bred 3 Stakes winners so far with a total earnings from his offspring in 2008 of $1,950,986. Impressive stuff. Blown Deadline has 2 wins to date in a Maiden and an Allowance over 7 and 8 furlongs respectively. Can run the distance as she was still winding up it looked like as she crossed the finish line on both occasions. Will need some more speed though to win here against classier competition.
6 CRUSADER FLAG(KY)
Owner: buffy5
Record: 4-1-2-0
Earnings: $35,485
Jockey: T O’Shea
Odds: 15/1
One of the outsiders, is from Afleet Alex x Fusaichi Pegasus x Storm Cat. Afleet Alex in his hird year as a sire, in 2008 has bred the 1 Stakes winner. Crusader Flag looking to add to that and is another that is looking for the extra distance. Ran very well on an off track for her maiden win and in her last race was still closing when she crossed in second place. Much classier field here so I dont think she will be challenging but I could be very wrong.
7 DEEP(JPN)
Owner: bertaal3
Record: 4-1-0-0
Earnings: $23,600
Jockey: A Park
Odds: 14/1
Out of Deep Impact x Sadler’s Wells x Seattle Slew hence the name Deep. Second year sire, Deep Impact bred 11 Stakes winners in 2007 and to date in 2008 has bred just the one. Deep is coming off her maiden win last time out over 8 furlongs. Prior to that she was tried initially on turf and then on dirt all over 6 furlongs. Certainly relished the extra distance over 8f and was going away when she crossed. Good speed figure too last time out and will need to improve on that if she is to be a serious contender.
8 GETTING TWISTED(KY)
Owner: super18
Record: 5-2-1-0
Earnings: $151,325
Jockey: M Santos
Odds: 9/1
Getting Twisted which is a cool name by the way is out of Unbridled’s Song x El Prado(IRE) x Nijinsky II. Famous long time sire now with plenty of stakes winners, 6 so far in 2008. But that will increase. 2 wins to her name one of which was in a Stakes race, the DelPenn Schuylerville Stakes Restricted over 6 furlongs. She then last ran in the Delpenn Spinaway restricted stakes again over 7 furlongs finishing in second place. Was tried on turf in a Stakes race but that was pretty much a failure. Prefers dirt and we will see if she can run past 7 furlongs. She looked like she was struggling at the end last time out but I could be wrong. Possible.
9 HOLLYWOOD ICON(KY)
Owner: socalman
Record: 5-1-3-1
Earnings: $41,473
Jockey: W Farthing
Odds: 7/1
5 races to her name with just the one win. But this is one consistent filly. She has never placed worse then third and has been gaining in speed and distance with every race. Out of Street Sense x Storm Cat x Gone West may well be another successful runner out of this sire. He has already bred 3 Stakes winners in his debut year as sire. Now this girl looks to me like a real winner both for the distance, her form and her potential. The one to back and at good odds for your cash.
10 A SLEW OF THUNDER(KY)
Owner: stylez5
Record: 4-1-1-0
Earnings: $32,510
Jockey: Mi Roberts
Odds: 12/1
As the name suggests, this girl is out of Thunder Gulch x Seattle Slew x In Reality. Some good breeding! Thunder Gulch has been a reasonably successful sire and has produced the one Stakes winner this year. She only has the one win and that was on a good dirt track over 5.5 furlongs. She is tending to fade though past 6 furlongs and I think this distance will be far too much for her. Untried on turf too so it may be well worth swapping her over there soon if she does not succeed here.
11 SHINEY JADE(NY)
Owner: sonofsham
Record: 3-2-0-0
Earnings: $66,380
Jockey: R Douglass
Odds: 13/1
I really like the name. I can never think of cool names like this particularly when they originate from the sires. This one from Jade Hunter x Glitterman x Forty Niner is bred well. Jade Hunter is a long time sire now and has produced a small share of stakes winners each year. Shiney Jade has only had the one run on dirt which resulted in a win over 8 furlongs. She was then run in her third race back on turf over 7.5 furlongs in the Her Rules Memorial stakes which was another win to her name. Being swapped back to dirt now for this one so not sure if she is going to like it or not. That said, her only outing on dirt was good. I think she will be challenging for a place even at 13/1 odds. Worth backing.
12 RED RIVER NINER(ENG)
Owner: super28
Record: 2-1-0-0
Earnings: $13,980
Jockey: T Donnalley
Odds: 11/1
This gal is out of Red Ransom x Forty Niner x Irish River(FR). Red Ransom, another long time sire has produced a fair amount of stakes winners early on but is still continuing now even with a reduced number of runners. 3 so far this year in 2008. Red River Niner has only had the 2 races so is still largely inexperienced against this field. First race was on turf over 8 furlongs and that was basically a mistake. She finished 6th and was going backwards when she crossed the finish line. Next race on dirt again over 8 furlongs was the exact opposite. Good strong run, closed well and hit the front in the straight, was powering when she crossed. Good speed rating of 80 too. So even though she is very very new to the dirt track and distance I really like this one to come out and take the win.
13 CK ZABRIO(NZ)
Owner: ckstables3
Record: 4-3-0-0
Earnings: $78,000
Jockey: M Jones
Odds: 18/1
Out of Zabeel(NZ) x Darby Creek Road x Con Brio II where Zabeel to date has 4 Stakes wins in his offspring to date this year. First three runs for this girl were on turf with mixed success. Debuted in an Allowance over 6 furlongs which she won and won well. Next was at Stakes level over 5.5 furlongs which was yet another win. She then failed completely over 7 furlongs in the Stakes Smackdown Restricted finishing a very disappointing 13th. Trainer swapped her over to the dirt just to get her feeling good again with a change of scenery and she responded with another win over 6 furlongs and a speed rating of 82. She came from around the midfield to win and was still running on at the finish. This is a lot longer though and there are not enough races as with the previous one to guarantee anything. Could challenge though.
14 HOLBACH(KY)
Owner: rapt
Record: 4-1-0-0
Earnings: $48,840
Jockey: F Stephenson
Odds: 6/1
Vindication x Secretariat x Raise a Native. Vindication has not bred any Stakes winners yet this year but does have a good record in his sire years since 2004. Holbach has had 4 runs on the dirt. She won on her debut race over 6 furlongs in a maiden and has been performing well since then culminating in her last run over 7 furlongs in the G1 Getaway Stakes finishing in sixth place. I think this is a little steep for her again but if she gets a good run she could well figure. As always its hard to tell with these young 2yo’s and if she has the mental stability now she could definitely take it out.
Well just about every one of these girls are bred well and there was obviously a lot of cash spent in getting them here. That said there can only be three horses who finish in the top three and Im going with a few roughies here today. Ive left a few of the tote favourites out mainly because of distance concerns. Im going with:
12 RED RIVER NINER(ENG)
11 SHINEY JADE(NY)
14 HOLBACH(KY)
