Can the Rest Escape From ALCATRAZ?
We are enjoying the early spring weather in Argentina to take in the GENERAL’S DAUGHTER Memorial Stakes. The race is named for General’s Daughter who was a seven time dirt winner. This seven and a half furlong Stakes for 3 year olds and over fillies and mares will be run on the dirt course which has been sizzling lately. This $70,000 stakes has a small field but could be interesting, Lets take a look:
#1 LILY WITH THE HAWK trainer – waremblem3, ( 5/1), Jockey – S. Joseph (13%), Avg Sp # (97.9)
Though six years old, this Agincourt mare is lightly raced with only 18 races and four stakes races. She’s finished in the money in 11 of those and has been running very consistently this entire year. She ran second in her last two stakes and was closing in each. She likes this distance and looks to be tough here.
#2 TASTY DELIGHT trainer – argo, ( 5/1), Jockey – Ja. Davis (13%), Avg Sp # (91.6)
This four year old Langfuhr filly is jumping into the Stakes circuit for the first time but is on a huge winning streak by winning her last four allowances in a row. She has thrown some nice speeds but it may be just a bit of a stretch as she seems to prefer a little shorter distance. We will see what she has at the end with everyone matched so well here.
#3 GREEN FUTURE trainer – nsw, ( 9/2), Jockey – K. Roth (15%), Avg Sp # (102.9)
This beautifully bred (Green Desert x Woodman x Alydar) 5 yr old mare out of broodmare Sport Welt started the year in style with four straight wins including the Legs in the Air Challenge Stakes. She jumped up to a couple of Grade Twos without results and tried to stretch it out to 9 furlongs last outing. This looks to be a better setting for her distance and company-wise.
#4 CRAZY CARON(IRE) trainer – turbo12, ( 9/2), Jockey – L. Sprowl (9%), Avg Sp # (94.7)
Crazy Caron’s career seems to be a bit crazy. She started on dirt, ran well on turf and has been back on the dirt for 10 in a row this year. The Rock of Gibralter out of Georgia Prospector offspring actually seems better suited for the grass but has been a gamer no matter where she runs. She had a habit of fading late until the last two races where trainer turbo12 may have gotten a handle on her pace. Hard to figure and an interesting filly to watch.
#5 ALCATRAZ trainer – stonecold, ( 7/5), Jockey – E. Seifert (24%), Avg Sp # (104.4)
Another super breeding (Arazi x Storm Cat x Mr. Prospector), this 5 yr old mare out of broodmare Stormy Night has been in 33 various stakes and graded races including the 2003 Bluegrass Oaks. A multiple stakes winner, she looked especially good her last outing with a 106 speed and a wire to wire victory. As long as she feels like running, this should be her race…she likes the distance, she looks sound and has the tracks best jockey in the stirrups.
#6 FUSAICHI AVENUE trainer – benharper, ( 9/2), Jockey – G. Wolfe (12%), Avg Sp # (100.7)
Anything with Fusaichi in the name generally means a solid horse and this 4 year old filly out of Saratoga Avenue is no exception. A five times stakes winner but her last two were mostly clunkers and I wonder if she is ready to compete with this crew or needs a bit more work. She ran her last race only two weeks back as well and that may play into the equasion. She’s got a lot of heart but may watch some others passing her by at the finish.
I sure can’t go against ALCATRAZ here with her experience and record so I think she will be a solid first. I like GREEN FUTURE to nose out CRAZY CARON at the wire for second. There are a lot of evenly matched females after ALCATRAZ so anything goes here.
Good luck to all runners!
