The Jim’s BB Sprint
3602.3215 This week 14 horses will take on the blistering 6 furlong on dirt Grade III race The Jim’s BB Sprint.
1. SALTY TIGER plunk 7/1 – (Awesome Again X Storm Cat) – This colt started out by breaking his maiden going 10 furlongs but once taken back to sprints posted a career best speed. Now this 5 year old colt has run some very successful graded attempts, never winning but closing each time with good speed. He has a stakes win at 6.5 furlongs that posted him a 115 speed. If he can tap in to that it will be a very quick race indeed.
2. IN A SIMPLE RHYME zewango4 7/1 – (Forty Niner x Mr. Prospector) This colt is brilliant having won a GI start two times back going 6 furlongs in the Sand Castle Golden Sprint. There he posted a 114 speed and showed his heart digging into close and win by a nose. Not unfamiliar to 110+ speed this horse id very talented and will be tough for any horse to beat.
3. SATAN’S STEED(KY) worldwide 9/1 – (Kingmambo X Roberto) After beginning his career on turf this colt switched to dirt where he has specialized at 7 to 7.5 furlongs. This will be a big change in distance for him and he has two dirt attempts at 6 furlongs and both were disappointing. Though with a slew of stakes wins at 7 furlongs, if the distance isn’t a problem he still may be hard pressed to catch the favorite. Though his last stakes win did earn him a blistering 115 speed.
4. BY ANY OTHER NAME(KY) megaman42 12/1 (Fusaichi Pegasus X Danzig) After a long time in allowance raced this colt rocketed to win a Track restricted allowance going 7 furlongs with a 112 speed. Though running at a slightly longer distance this colt has risen to the challenge and has been 2 times graded placed in his two attempts. And I am sure owner Megaman42 is thrilled about his second in the G1 Gary Carter Handicap. This is a tough race and though this colt is rising he will have to rise even more to get in the money.
5. CAPE QUEST(JPN) baffster 13/1 (Coronado’s Quest X Cape Canaveral) started late as a three year old this colt has shown a preference to dirt sprints that is very prominent. Of late he has been at best third in his stakes attempts despite posting unquestionably good speeds. Though to win here he will have to step up, GIII competiton is much stiffer than anything this colts faced before.
6. PULPIT’S PRINCE(KY) tmaria 7/1 (Pulpit x Storm Boot) This colt has a lot of talent with many graded starts and places and wins among them. In January he won a brilliant 6 furlong GIII race with a 113, since he has posted comparable speeds and done very well. He will need to continue with his recent trend and will need to be sharp after running only two weeks ago.
7. FANTASY FESTIVAL(MD) brassylass 23/1 (Fantasticat X Festival of Light) This colt defiantly comfortable at the 6 furlong distance but he has not shown the speed that will be needed to win here. He posted a 100 to finish third in a GIII last time out. This will be hard to do here as many horses can post over 110 in this race. He will have to be on his game and put in a career best to get in the money.
8. OTTO ALLEGHENY(KY) mardigras 13/1 (Smart Strike X Damascus) This horse is very fond of 7.5 and 8 furlong races having posted his two career best speeds and winning at those distances. Though he has also shown to do well in lower level 6 furlong races, his speeds were much better longer. I fear that he will be discontented with the distance and not fare as well as he does in the longer races. He will have to show the same brilliance that he does a just a bit longer.
9. MR TOMS RIVER NJ(KY) honeyj 6/1 (Storm Cat X Mr. Prospector) No surprise this blueblood is the second betting choice with 11 wins out of 18 starts. He won 6 straight then had another 4 straight wins. What a fun horse to own. He has shown 6 furlongs to be a good distance posting a 114 speed to win The Count Fingers Sprint. Then last time out going 7 furlongs posted a 117 speed. Brilliant if he can pull that kind of speed no one will catch him.
10. TEUTONIC TERROR b2912 11/1 (Gilded Time X Sovereign Dancer) This former claimers dominated the claiming ranks with ease until being asked for allowance races which he gladly also ran very well in. Now while he is good enough to place in open stakes the competition is very tough here and should ask him to really give his all. He will have to best himself by many speed points to get in the money but as he is doing well he could step it up.
11. PRO HISTORY’S CALL(KY) capsized 19/1 (Seeking the Gold X Unbridled) This colt was introduced to stakes races a few back where he did so generally finishing off the board but still bringing home a check. But after a short break in allowance races he improved and stepped back to the stakes level with ease. Now in his last start the Gary Carter Sprit he finished 5th and beaten after getting the lead. The shorter distance may help him hang on.
12. HOLLAND PARK tejanoroy 16/1 (Ecton Park X Seattle Slew) This colt has been straddling the line between stakes class and allowance class for many years. He wins in allowances but can bring home checks in stakes, though he hasn’t won one in awhile. He will need make the leap and choose the stakes side, he could do very well though his speeds are not quite there he has been finishing well. Will need a career best to win.
13. MY TOWNSHIP jeffdrew 21/1 (Delaware Township X Barbeau) This horses last best race came in the Deep South Sprint GI where he dominated to win going 6 furlongs with a 107 speed. While since then he has lost his touch having a few thirds not even winning when dropped to allowances. Even after a 2 month break he really hasn’t snapped back. Let’s just hope it’s taking him a few starts to get started.
14. MADE MYSELF(KY) epcotlen3 5/1 ( Pleasantly Perfect X Mt. Livermore) The favorite in this race has put in dominating speeds running 110+ five times in 6 starts his only lower speed was on an off track. If this horse is on there is no stopping him, though I think he does prefer 7 furlongs. Even with the 6.5 GIII win with a 115 speed a career best could suggest a faster speed for shorter. If so the track will be scorched when he is done.
I like the 14, the 2 and the 6. Good luck to all.
