Bargain Bred Racing Series 100 Guineas

Stakes
One mile
Firm Turf
$75,000
Bargain-breds, 3 years old

I like my bargain breds, so I support the Bargain Bred Racing Series with a stable, even though my own entrants in its bargain bred-restricted stakes can’t finish better than fifth.  If you have a few bargain breds in your stables, or if you just like seeing something other than Storm Cats get some glory once in a while, you should support the series with a stable too.  Today’s series of races in Virginia includes the 100 Guineas, a cleverly named parallel to Europe’s venerable mile races for sophomores.  Let’s get to the field:

PP  Horse ID  Horse  Owner  Jockey  Odds

1 161153 SEEK AN ACCORD(TX)  redflag1  R Mills  99/1

Gutsy sending an unraced maiden filly to this race.  Sire Seeking a Home shows turf runners from his 30 progeny showing.  Sole stakeswinner JOE’S LOOP is a regular performer at long sprint distances on turf.  Damsire Ishiguru gets some grass runners too, but this is his only damsire product.  The dam’s damsire is from the Sadler’s Wells line, so that adds further green fuel to the fire.  Could surprise at that price, but probably not for the win.

2 145166 MOTLEY CREW(AUS)  mssbeagle  G Butler  22/1

This member of the Blacksoxuk cráe won on dirt at first asking, but really took a move forward in her last on turf in Nebraska.  She came running late for a show finish with a career high 82 speed.  Sire Minardi, a son of the now-famous Boundary, has generally produced dirt runners, as has damsire Bold Executive in that role, although his stakeswinner as a sire, GONZO(CAN) , is a turfer.  Adding two extra furlongs from the last race may bring further improvement with her late turn of foot.

3 161339 TOTO ARABIAN(JPN)  redflag1  T Mudgett  99/1

Another unraced filly, this one by undefeated Lammtarra.  Despite his turfy success and pedigree, Lammtarra has leaned a little to dirt in the sim, including such dirt runners as stakeswinner LOVELY SHEEP.  Damsire Shaamit fits the bill in terms of turf sirelines, and was probably underrated as a turf sire in his time.  As a damsire, though, he’s done little.  I like this one less of the uncoupled redflag1 entry.

4 142659 DOOMBEN(AUS)  gatornavy  B Hogin  6/1

The Aussie gal won her first two last year, then was a not-unexpected abject failure in the G1-World Cup Juvenile Filly Turf Mile.  Since then, though, she’s had a string of points-earning stakes runs and consistent speed in the mid-80s.  Second-year Danehill son Kempinsky is the sire, and he has a turf stakeswinner already in PAUL’S BOUTIQUE(AUS).  Damsire Straight Strike has been quite successful as a sire, but more on dirt.  There is a son of Lyphard in the dam’s damsire spot in the pedigree.  Not outclassed here.

5 145968 VILLAGE GREEN(NZ)  bluerfc  B Jenkins  35/1

The first colt to line up will be this maiden.  His four starts, all on turf, include creditable ones in the mid-70s, but only one had him finishing better than sixth.  Sire City on a Hill has all turf breeding (Rahy/Irish River) and a turf stakeswinner in EXBOURNE’S HILL.  Damsire Green Tune has the Green Dancer blood working for him as a turf sire, but very little success in the sim breeding shed.  Would be a surprise to finish any higher than the end of the trifecta.

6 147935 BPB MARKANE(AUS)  bpboost3  D Foster  7/1

He’s one of sire Markane’s two stakeswinners, both on turf.  His stakes win was against open company, and though he’s winless since then, he’s often running in the 80s with a bit of late run.  Since he’s adding furlongs for this affair, a move forward can be expected.  Damsire Royal Anthem leans strongly turf and has had some success, while the dam’s damsire is a Roberto stallion.

7 134563 ALTIERI SORT(ITY)  hawkz3  B Douglass  9/1

Speedball filly won the Class Ack Juvenile, a BBRS series race, back in November on turf, and has scored a trio of thirds in stakes in her races since then.  The last was in the BBRS Ozark Diamond on dirt, but she seems to run her race regardless of surface.  She’s sire Altieri’s sole stakeswinner.  Altieri is a son of Selkirk, and damsire Carnegie won the Arc de Triomphe.  The dam’s damsire is a Nijinsky guy.  Every chance to win on the lead, and a true trifecta threat.

8 144674 RENDEZVOUS RATE(IRE)  foxon6  L Creek  2/1

The Diamond Green(FR) filly keeps getting better, and just won the Ozark Diamond and Bargain Oaks in succession.  Her every race to date has been on dirt, however, and despite her European bloodlines, her sire looks dirt-focussed (Bluegrass Derby Trial winner CHANGE OF SCENERY(IRE) is another example from the same sire).  Damsire Stutz Blackhawk has been versatile as a sim damsire, but is from the dirt-tinged Mr. Prospector line.  Regardless, there is a wealth of quality here and tactical speed, so a win remains very possible.  Will the three-week turnaround hurt her?

9 142590 BIG CURVE(CA)  willowisp3  B Brace  6/1

The curvy gal is a stakes veteran, with a second in last year’s Bargain Juvenile, but hasn’t moved forward much since then.  Her only turf run was a last-place finish two months ago in Ohio that may not be as bad as it looks.  Sire Massive has few other foals to evaluate, and damsire Trajectory looks dirt-based.  She’ll need to get back to her best stalking style to recapture BBRS glory here.

10 135494 LOT AT STEAK(AUS)  hawkz3  As Shove  9/2

Stakeswinning mare is rarely off the board and shows a recent top speed of 91.  You couldn’t breed this one as a bargain today, but she remains sire Snitzel’s only stakeswinner.  Damsire Royal Anthem’s proclivities were mentioned above, and there is a Lyphard line dam’s damsire.  She’s liable to be dead last early, but is a top chance to upset the favorite.

11 164847 LOWTHER(IRE)  mssbeagle  K Wiliczka  99/1

Mssbeagle’s other entry is an unraced filly – a rabbit for stablemate MOTLEY CREW(AUS)?  Sire Intikhab has two stakeswinners, including SHOAIB AKHTAR(IRE) on turf, and provides Red Ransom blood for the green.  New Mexico sire Golden Ransom takes the damsire spot, and looks entirely dirt-oriented with Hennessy as his sire.  There is 2×4 inbreeding to Red Ransom if that inspires.

12 125307 TWAZZO(TX)  txbred  O Ridenour  9/2

Another successful filly, with three wins and a second to RENDEZVOUS RATE(IRE) in the Bargain Oaks.  Unlike some in here, she is proven repeatedly at route distances.  She has no turf experience, and while sire Serazzo is by Kris S., he’s also a full brother to dirt performer You and I.  Twining is a quality damsire, but has produced his top runners on dirt in that spot.  Interesting and worth a look; winner if form translates to turf, overlay if it doesn’t.
