We have a small but very competitive field here this weekend. The weatherman tells us that it looks like the rain may end by race time but the track may be just a bit off. With young ladies like this running, most haven’t had a lot of experience at anything let alone running on an off track. Most of these trainers try to make sure that everything is just right for these girls and don’t willing send them out in the rain. After all, didn’t your mama teach you to come in out of the rain?!? With that in mind, we have a lot of questions among these girls and the one that is able to answer the most of them will come home the winner. Some of these young ladies are looking better and better and are really turning into solid race horses. I’m excited to see what happens, so let’s take a look:

1 – FLYING KITTEN(KY) ODDS STABLE WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED EARNINGS RANK Jacklad Empire Stables 8/1 Sorrento 14.5% K.Hawkz 136 – 10 – 17 – 7 – 7% 92.41 $ 149,820 73
( KITTEN’S JOY x FUSAICHI PEGASUS x NIJINSKY II out of FUSAICHI TAZINSKY) This beautiful light grey filly has a beautiful pedigree as well. She won a Stakes race last August and has been competitive but hasn’t won since then. Most of the races have been Gradeds since then but last race she tried to stretch out to a mile and half and really took a step back for trainer Sorrento finishing way back. She is back at a mile and hopefully likes that better. Jockey Hawkz is in the leather and has been struggling this year as well. Her deep closing style will be wasted on the inside post position. She has never run on an off track. This could be a tough spot for this team.

( NORTH LIGHT (IRE) x CARSON CITY x NORTHERN DANCER out of NORSTAR) It’s a little tough to handicap this sweet brown filly. She has only run six races and this will be her very first try at a Stakes race. There is good news and bad. She seems to like an off track, winning on a good track last time out. Unfortunately she hasn’t run faster than an 82 SPF in that race. Trainer AGK04 is hoping for a big improvement here and it is possible here but she is taking a big jump up in class. Another problem is that jockey Katz has won only once all year and may hinder this filly in a close race. This team is hoping that the rain forecast really helps out.

(AFLEET ALEX x LEAR FAN x KRIS(GB) out of FAN JOAN) This filly is out of broodmare FAN JOAN who has already foaled a Stakes and a Graded winner. Trainer TheMainMan is hoping that this girl can follow in those shoes. This will only be her second Stakes race since last September where she finished mid pack in the Filly Grand Prix GI. Since then she has only one allowance win although she has finished second in the last two. Her one off track outing led her to a close second. Jockey Kanski is in the irons and may feel like iron in the saddle as poorly as he has done this year. This is another filly that is hoping for a boost from the rain.

( STREET CRY (IRE) x DEPUTY MINISTER x SECRETARIAT) Since turning to the grass right before Christmas last year this filly has won five of six including three Stakes and a Graded. Her only blemish was a fifth in a GI two back. There are a couple of strikes against her and trainer Astinator3 though. She has never run on an off track with rain forecast for Saturday and she seems to bounce a bit after a triple digit race which she has last time out. She looks like the class of the field here and jockey Tazdevil is more than capable guiding these youngsters. It just depends on whether her front of the pack style will work on the off track. A formidable team here.

( FANTASTIC LIGHT x MR. PROSPECTOR x NIJINSKY II out of SENORITA GERI) Ten of eleven on the grass in the money for this nicely bred filly. Her only blemish was a try at the GI Sidney Oaks mile and a half last time out where she decided she didn’t like the distance and finished more than 30 lengths back. She won the GII Juvenile Silver Spoon last Thanksgiving on an off track and that should translate well here. She has Harzheim in the saddle and he is one of the best. Her best spot is to just run off of the lead and there should be enough early speed here to facilitate her plan. She needs to bump up the SPFs a bit but could be a live choice here.

( A.P. INDY x SADLER’S WELLS x BUCKPASSER) After a solid but undistinguished six races on the clay, trainer Bongo moved this chestnut girl to the turf two back with excellent results. She has won two straight including the Spunky Princess Special Stakes last time out although that was admittedly against a short field of four. Jockey Ohlmann is steady and knows how to keep them in the race. This one is hard to figure with her limited experience on the grass. She has only one race on an off track and that was on the dirt although she fared rather well. She could be ready to move to the big time or she may not be quite ready for this class. Trainer Bongo is certainly hoping for the former.

( BERNARDINI x DEPUTY MINISTER x MR. PROSPECTOR) This chestnut mare is a high priced breeding beauty that may have found last time out that she prefers the longer distances. She just missed winning in that race at a mile and a half and it was on an off track too. She is here for trainer EJDStable to see if it was more the mud or the real estate that she preferred. She has always continued to improve and looks like she could end up being one of those that really comes into her own as a four year old that runs those turf routes successfully seemingly forever. She has jockey Bates holding the reins and he’s been around forever too with 20 years experience but seems to be on the down side of the hill.

( BLACK SAM BELLAMY (IRE) x INDIAN RIDGE(IRE) x A.P. INDY out of RAIDER MYSTIC) I like the two way name of this filly with the GER at the end. This girl was really on a roll with four wins and a second in five straight before disappointing at a mile in a GIII last time out. She faded badly and now trainer Springtime has to wonder whether it was the competition she was up against, just an aberration, or if she is ready for a rest. This race should go some towards that answer although it will be the first time on an off track for the young brown filly. They have Tyrell in the irons and that should help as he is more than capable with these youngsters. Her front end style shouldn’t be hurt too much by being outside with this short of a field.
Morning Line = 4-6-7-5-8
Paz Picks = 4-5-6-8
There are more questions than answers in this race but that is sometimes the case with young ladies like this. There are several that have a good chance but lots of reasons why they may not be the one in this race. I like the filly with the boy’s name, JACK O to finish fourth although she may finish much better. I’m afraid she may need some time off. PAZJAZZ PRAYER could well be the one to beat here but with her limited turf and Graded experience, I can’t pull the trigger. She is looking like she could be tough on the turf though and I think she has enough to finish in the top three. SENORITA HANAA is really the wild card here. She likes the distance, has been successful and has won on an off track. She just hasn’t run as fast as some here. If she can raise that ceiling she could well be the victor. ENTER SHIKARI looks to be the one to beat if she doesn’t mind getting her feet wet. I think that she has enough to overcome that little problem and tiptoe through the raindrops to the winners circle.
Good luck to all runners!
