Grade III Slowness Stakes
Slowness Stakes

A mile and one eighth
Firm Turf
$150,000
All horses, 3 years old and up
Only nine horses compete for this G3 turf race here in Longchamp but there are some quality entries on show. In a effort to bring you the BTB reader the best tools and systems possible I have managed to track down the infamous Scrabble Pete, a top tipster who is prepared to share with all of us his ‘miracle’ system which has made many people very happy over the years.
Jace811: So Scrabble Pete, how did you come by that name?
Scrabble Pete: Well it’s fairly obvious really if you’d let me explain my system to you.
J: Okay, the floor is all yours.
SP: Simply put after exhaustive study it became obvious to me that the majority of winners scored better on a scrabble board than their less illustrious competitors. I simply work out their score and it helps me pinpoint the winners easily and quickly.
J: I see. So your name is based on the system – Scrabble – and your forename – Pete.
SP: Yes … well, sort of … my name is actually Edward but that didn’t really sound as good so I changed it to Pete.
J: Okay. It all sounds easy to me, but doesn’t that simply mean that horses with longer names will always be highlighted?
SP: Yes, well there is a bit more to it than that which I shall explain at the end.
J: Right let’s look at the card.
The runners are:
FIVE STAR CADET(GB)
Trainer: desperado4
(Motivator (GB) x
Odds: 6/1 Earnings: 106,180 Runs/Wins: 15/5
A 4yo colt from Desperado Stables and bred from a D class mare. Looking for his hat-trick of wins here after a very good start to 2008.
SP: 10+4+8 = 22
DANCING MASTER(IRE)
Trainer: yunkai
(Peintre Celebre (IRE) x Shirley Heights(GB) x Vice Regent)
Odds: 6/1 Earnings: 400,665 Runs/Wins: 30/10
A 5yo scratch bred horse from Given Stables: Fire and Blood. Another one looking for his third consecutive win. Not quite made his mark in graded company as yet but this must be a real chance.
SP: 11+8 = 19
ARTIFICIAL CRISIS
Trainer: nowitsdark
(Machiavellian x Silver Hawk x Pleasant Colony)
Odds: 7/2 Earnings: 425,240 Runs/Wins: 19/6
A 6yo scratch bred horse from Psychloan Stables. A lightly raced 6yo who must be a big favourite here today after a number of brave recent performances.
SP: 15+8 = 23
Trainer: nog1
(Redoute’s Choice (AUS) x Kingmambo x Sadler’s Wells)
Odds: 9/2 Earnings: 231,675 Runs/Wins: 14/5
A 4yo scratch bred colt from Hawk43 Stables. An unstoppable colt who looks capable of going on to better and bigger things in time.
SP: 14+8 = 22
A NECESSARY EVIL
Trainer: fiat
(Vindication x
Odds: 6/1 Earnings: 329,313 Runs/Wins: 41/7
A 5yo horse from Topicount Stables and based on a G class horse by buzzbarn. He’s been through a number of stables in his career, mostly through the auction, but is perhaps getting a little long in the tooth now. Still a capable performer on his day.
SP: 1+14+7 = 22
MOON DAMAGE(IRE)
Trainer: finalfix
(Moon Ballad (IRE) x In The Wings(GB) x Alydar)
Odds: 5/1 Earnings: 222,723 Runs/Wins: 32/7
A 5yo horse from Wilmington Parliaments LLC and bred from a G class mare by bobmarley. Claimed for just $10k this horse may prove to be a real bargain if his last race is anything to go by.
SP: 6+10 = 16
GRAND TRIGGER(ENG)
Trainer: karolyi
(Double Trigger (IRE) x Intikhar (IRE) x Rainbow Quest)
Odds: 10/1 Earnings: 136,208 Runs/Wins: 24/4
A 4yo scratch bred colt from Dupre Stables. A busy colt who has simply failed to win often enough for my liking.
SP: 7+9 = 16
FYODOROVICH(JPN)
Trainer: achiew
(Stravinsky x Bianconi x Lord Gaylord)
Odds: 7/1 Earnings: 123,844 Runs/Wins: 28/5
A 4yo colt from Theburglar Stables and bred from an F class mare. Yet another hat-trick seeker and possibly the colt to watch. Could lead all the way.
SP: 26
DOLPHIN KAYF(GB)
Trainer: jadolphin
(Kayf Tara (GB) x Cozzene x Graustark)
Odds: 10/1 Earnings: 175,093 Runs/Wins: 15/5
A 4yo scratch bred colt from Jadolphin Stables. Lightly raced colt who will probably improve with age. This race is probably a little too much this early in his career.
SP: 13+14 = 27
Summary
J: I notice that you didn’t include the tags when calculating.
SP: No, that would be silly.
J: So your choice is Dolphin Kayf?
SP: No, no, no. I told you there was slightly more to it than that – my actual choice is Fyodorovich.
J: May I ask how you came to that conclusion?
SP: Well there are certain magic numbers too.
J: Magic numbers?
SP: Yes, certain numbers have a bonus of 10 added to them, and then the whole scores are divided by the number of words in their name. It looks fairly clear that my choice is going to win by some margin.
J: Can you reveal those magic numbers to me and the readers?
SP: No.
J: Oh. Well anyway let’s hope your choice comes up trumps for us this week.
