The SEA PROJECT Stakes
Eight fillies and mares go to the post for the Sea Project Stakes
By post position:
SLITHERING(JPN) 4yo filly Owner: batesy
The good: Comes into this race off of a convincing two length victory LTO at this distance.
The bad: Has been running a lot since coming off of a three month layoff. Needs to be near the lead to have a chance.
The prognosis: As long as she is fit, she should be competitive here. She seems to relish this distance, but must show her best to win
DRUNK AS A SKUNK(IRE) 4yo filly Owner: z2912
The good: Has shown decent speed numbers since switching to the dirt. Has flashed speed to grab the lead and wear down the opposition
The bad: Has a tendency to burn herself out by the top of the stretch and fade. First try at this distance.
The prognosis: Will need to bring her “A” game to be competitive. Owner has spaced out her races well, so she should be fresh. Needs to carry her speed to the finish line.
SWEET SWEET CANDY 5yo mare Owner: eaaaprizes
The good: Won at this distance in a stakes race four back while posting a 110sf. This race should set up nicely for her running style.
The bad: Seems to have trouble getting motivated to run if she is caught out of position. Beaten a combined 21 lengths in her last two
The prognosis: If she is on her game, this race is hers to lose. She has the talent to win and cuts back in distance to one at which she has shown that she can win.
MAGPIE FEVER(KY) 4yo filly Owner: vawoman
The good: Ran a lifetime best 104sf LTO at this distance. Improving with each race. Will have a hot pace to run at.
The bad: First attempt at stakes level. Lifetime best SF was only good enough for second money last out.
The prognosis: She is rounding into form coming into this race. Has shown she can win from any position whether on the lead or from off the pace. With any more improvement, she can take this one.
WONNABY MAROONED(IRE) 5yo mare Owner: wonnabe
The good: Should be fresh after a two month layoff. Has had success around this distance in her career. Has earned a paycheck in 13 of 16 career races.
The bad: Fell apart LTO going 13f, losing by 21 lengths. Has only topped 100sf once in her career.
The prognosis: Although she has certainly proved herself capable of handling this distance, I hesitate to back a horse coming off of a layoff. If I backed every other horse in this race, she would be a lock to win it. That’s just my luck.
IRON AGENT 5yo mare Owner: ironmike2
The good: Another horse that should be fresh coming off of a two month layoff. Has run three times at this distance at stakes level posting a win, a place, and a show for her efforts.
The bad: Threw in two straight clunkers after trying the turf three races ago.
The prognosis: Will need to get back into form to be competitive here. Cuts back to her preferred distance, which should help. Has shown versatility to go wire-to-wire or come from off the pace.
BOLD EMBLEM(KY) 4yo filly Owner: cylla
The good: Has taken home a paycheck in fifteen straight and 24 of 25 lifetime races. Distance won’t be a factor.
The bad: Hasn’t run on the dirt in a year and a half. Didn’t break her maiden until switched to the turf.
The prognosis: Unknown entity. If she takes to the surface, she could surprise. Could be destined for a switch back to the lawn. I prefer to watch one before putting money on her back.
The good: Closed well LTO at long odds to take home a share of the purse. Has shown flashes of brilliance in taking three in a row last year.
The bad: Stretching out from 8f and got blown out by a combined 59 lengths in her previous two races.
The prognosis: Will need everything she’s got to win here. She can get the distance, but will need more than she has shown in the past to get it done.
