Boogity Bear Stakes G3

Boogity Bear Stakes
Grade III
A mile and one eighth on Turf
$125,000
All horses, 3 years old and up

The first Saturday of racing in Spring 2008 promises to be a good one.  The weather is gorgeous, the flowers are blossoming and the track is listed as firm for the 10th running of the Boogity Bear Stakes.  We have a field of twelve colts and horses, 4, 5, 6 year olds and even one 7 year old.  The stakes record for the Boogity Bear Stakes is held by last year’s winner, Rockin’ Pnemonia with a 108.  I definitely think that record can and will be broken this Saturday.

PP 1   OLLIE’S GONE   (GONE WEST x LEAR FAN x DANZIG) bred and trained by beamnreasn (Spartan Racing Stables, 9%)  Odds:  5 to 1

This 5 year old brown horse out of Fantastic Ollie is no stranger to graded company.  In fact the only race in his career that was not a stakes races was his first race.   Since then he has competed in this class or higher 15 out of his 22 career starts.  He has definitely been competitive in the last year, finishing in the money 66% of the time, but hasn’t been first across the line in over a year.  Almost all of Ollie’s races in the last year were G1, maybe with the drop in class he will be able to bring home another win.

PP 2   LAST GROOM T   (GONE WEST x BLUSHING GROOM (FR) x CRÈME DELA CREME) bred and trained by eastecho99 (Tsyndicate Stables, 9%)   Odds:  30 to 1

Last Groom is by far the most experienced horse in the field.  Having run 52 races in his 7 years, he has just topped the million dollar mark in earnings for Tsyndicate Stables.   It has been a few months since this longshot has put up a triple digit speed figure, and he will probably need to do that Saturday if he wants to finish in the money.   He has raced Seeking Sal (5 times), Maverick and Grand Trigger, also in today’s race.

PP 3   SEEKING SAL   (SEEKING THE GOLD x KRIS S. x MAGESTERIAL) bred and trained by keryn (Topicount Stables, 15%)     Odds:  7 to 1

This 6 year old out of Mac’s Courage has a very impressive past performance history.  He is a 9 time G1 winner and has brought home over 6 million dollars for Topicount Stables.   He also is tied for the highest speed rating in the field with 114.  He has put up high enough speed figures late last year to be competitive here, but in his only race in 2008 his speed was 89.    In his last two races he faced Qamby, Grand Trigger and Last Groom T, finishing behind all of them.  He did win against Qamby last summer.   Seeking Sal will have top jockey H. McCoy and is the only top ten ranked horse here.

PP 4   WITH YOUR CRIES   (NOT FOR LOVE x MT. LIVERMORE x SECRETARIAT) bred by kaif013 and trained by kaif014 (Kaif Stables, 18%)  Odds:  11 to 1

With Your Cries is a lightly raced, 4 year old chestnut colt.   He is coming off his first stakes win last time out at THE HERMIT IMPROVE CHALLENGE and makes his graded debut here.  He finished in front of Qamby Pub when they raced late last year.   With Your Cries has typically run with a sustained speed, but in his last two wins he stayed back and then made a late push for the finish line.

PP 5   WEAPON X   (SADLER’S WELLS x EXCLUSIVE NATIVE x NEVER BEND) bred and trained by tesio (Galileo Stables, 17%)  Odds:  8 to 1

Another horse making his graded debut is Weapon X.   This lightly raced 5 year old put up his career high speed figure of 109 in his second place finish at the GREENHAW’S WORLD Challenge in January.   He is a late runner and will have a lot of competition up the stretch to take home the win.  I think he will do well here Saturday.

PP 6   DUMBER THEN A ROCK (IRE)   (ROCK OF GIBRALTAR (IRE) x RAINBOW QUEST x SADLER’S WELLS) bred by persuader and trained by gum (Gum Stables, 10%)  Odds:  7 to 1

This two time stakes winner will be gunning for his first graded win on Saturday.   Gum Stables is definitely not dumber then a rock to claim this 4 year old out of Feel So Stupid, he has won 5 of his 8 races since being claimed last summer.   Although he finished behind Maverick in his last race out, he beat Fearsome and Grand Trigger in his win at The CLIQUE RALPH Handicap in January.   He career high speed figure of 113 was at this distance, but will have to hold strong against the late runners to win here.

PP 7   GRAND TRIGGER (ENG)   (DOUBLE TRIGGER (IRE) x INTIKHAB (IRE) x RAINBOW QUEST) bred and trained by karolyi (Dupre Stables, 3%)    Odds:  11 to 1

Grand Trigger is making his fourth graded try here in North Florida.  This 4 year old scratch bred horse likes this distance and definitely has the speed figures to be competitive.  He will be pushing early to take the lead.  There is a lot of late speed in the race so with only 3 weeks rest, the question is whether or not Grand Trigger will have enough left down the stretch to pull out his first stakes win.

PP 8   FEARSOME (KY)   (FUSAICHI PEGASUS x DEPUTY MINISTER x MR. PROSPECTOR) bred and trained by avalanche3 (Squirrel Stables, 11%)   Odds:  14 to 1

Despite a drop in speed the last race out, this 4 year old scratch bred colt looks like he will be a strong contender here.  After starting his career on dirt, trainer has found success running him on turf in the last 9 months.  Although 19 of his 22 career starts have been routes, this will be his first try at 9 furlongs and this is also his graded stakes debut.

PP 9   QAMBY PUB   (COZZENE x MR. GREELEY x PRIVATE ACCOUNT) bred and trained by aussie (Tulloch Stables, 11%)  Odds:  11 to 1

Qamby Pub, a six year old light grey horse out of Counting With Poet, will makes his second attempt at 9 furlongs and graded stakes here.  A year ago trainer aussie switched Qamby Pub from sprints to routes with excellent results.  He had a 10 point jump in speed and won his first two tries at routes.  He has been competing at the stakes level since then and has brought home a show and a place, but is looking for his first stakes win here.

PP 10   WHATITSALLABOUT (IRE)   (GALILEO (IRE) x CLUSHING GROOM x MAJESTIC LIGHT) bred and trained by flippymom (Ozsteve Stables, 15%)  Odds:  8 to 1

Whatitsallabout has been competing in stakes since last fall.  He won his debut in stakes, but hasn’t been able to be first across the line since then.  He will probably be one of the early leaders, but with all the late speed in the field, he might have a hard time holding on.  This will be this 5 year old horse’s second try at graded stakes.

PP 11   KALEIDESCOPE EYES (KY)   (MINESHAFT x SADLER’S WELLS x ROBERTO) bred and trained by derbybound (Snyder Stables, 14%)    Odds:  6 to 1

Kaleidescope Eyes is a lightly raced colt based on Gringotts.   Although he has two wins and two places in his 4 stakes tries, his graded stakes tries were not as successful.  After his last attempt in this class trainer derbybound gave him almost 4 months of rest.  He came out of that with a nice jump in speed in his last two races, posting career high of 114 (and tied for high in this field).  He tries again here to make the jump in class and I think this time he will be successful.

PP 12   MAVERICK   (GONE WEST x FORTY NINER x A.P. INDY) bred and trained by desperado2 (Desperado Stables, 18%)  Odds:  5 to 1

Maverick, out of A.P. Magic, is racing in graded stakes for the first time in two years.  He has been in stakes on and off since then, but has only been the first one across the line once.  He definitely has the speed to be competitive here and he finished ahead of Dumber Then A Rock in his last time out.  He will be joining the many other late runners here.

This should be a great race to watch.  The morning line says it will be Maverick or Ollie’s Gone followed by Kaleidescope Eyes.   I think we will see Grand Trigger, Dumber Then A Rock and Whatitsallabout fighting for the early lead, but with a full crop of late runners it will be interesting to see what happens about third call.  I think Dumber Then A Rock will hold on for the second place finish just behind Kaleidescope Eyes.  My pick for third is Seeking Sal.  Good luck and happy racing to all.  🙂
