Someone Set Us Up The Bomb Stakes
Grade III
A mile and one half
Fast Dirt
$150,000
All horses, 4 years old and up

A full field of top quality runners line up for this interesting route race.  Some very interesting stats as always with these route specialists, and with so many up-and-coming 4yo’s taking on some fairly big names, it could be anybody’s race.  The runners are:

DRAGONSTONE

Trainer: khalasar2

(Kingmambo x Storm Cat x Seattle Slew)

Odds: 4/1                    Earnings: 318,878                  Runs/Wins: 30/6

A 5yo scratch bred horse from Given Stables: Fire and Blood.  The favourite is really on fire at the moment and the only surprise is that he hasn’t been able to put in a good performance in a graded race … yet.  This could be his chance to shine, though he really doesn’t win as many races as he should.

CRAFTY PART

Trainer: tryarder

(Sadler’s Wells x Theatrical(IRE) x Forty Niner)

Odds: 20/1                  Earnings: 469,660                  Runs/Wins: 37/11

A 5yo scratch bred horse from Boxerwood Stables.  Has performed ok in stakes races but has failed to win a race in over a year.  His form has been too patchy for my liking and I can’t see him upping his action in this one.

MONARO KINDA GUY

Trainer: bartfarg3

(Brocco x Ops Smile x Forzando(GB))

Odds: 19/1                  Earnings: 265,001                  Runs/Wins: 37/9

A 6yo scratch bred horse from Bartfarg Stables.  This guy can still knock out reasonable long distance runs at stakes level but is altogether too patchy for my liking.  Seems to lack speed where it matters and will struggle to stay up with the leaders in this one.

LIGHTWORK(IRE)

Trainer: simsters4

(North Light(IRE) x Deputy Minister x Round Table)

Odds: 9/1                    Earnings: 227,480                  Runs/Wins: 15/8

A 4yo scratch bred horse from The Evil Empire.  Only lightly raced but could be the one to watch in the future.  He’s looked excellent since switching to dirt last year and, after a very easy win last time, could make all the running in this one.

SERAPHIC

Trainer: jmb

(Pulpit x Sadler’s Wells x Gone West)

Odds: 12/1                  Earnings: 407,918                  Runs/Wins: 27/8

A 5yo scratch bred horse from Jmb Stables.  He’s quite capable of having a good run here but seems to be reluctant to win of late.  At his best he’s in with a shout of a place.

SAD JAVA MAN(IRE)

Trainer: golfteam

(Saddler’s Hall x Manlove x Java Gold)

Odds: 13/1                  Earnings: 409,093                  Runs/Wins: 41/11

A 6yo scratch bred horse from Golfteam Stables and bred by ponyfarts.  Sold by his breeder after numerous unsuccessful attempts to break his maiden as a 2yo,  and then later claimed as a 4yo,  this horse has been a nice find by his current owner.  A couple of   places in graded races shows he has ability but there are much better horses in this field, so he may just be racing for a check rather than a place.

CSI SUPER

Trainer: super21

(Point Given x Fappiano x Lyphard)

Odds: 12/1                  Earnings: 1,095,873               Runs/Wins: 33/11

A 5yo scratch bred mare from More Evil Than The Evil Empire! and bred by longhorn.  As a winner of G2- Susan G. Komen For The Cure, G2-Big Dessert Stakes and G2-Dinner At Rats  Handicap last year this mare has to be seen as a real threat.  She comes into this in fairly good form and will give the boys a run for their money.

CATTY SHACK

Trainer: mindblower

(Cat Thief x Unbridled x Graustark)

Odds: 7/1                    Earnings: 434,014                  Runs/Wins: 38/12

A 6yo scratch bred horse from Snyder Stables.  Another horse who is capable of a very good run on his day and one to watch out for in the latter stages. In pretty good form just now but will have to be especially good to pull back the leaders.

EVALUTION

Trainer: acote3

(Maria’s Mon x Run The Gauntlet x Speak John)

Odds: 16/1                  Earnings: 160,295                  Runs/Wins: 33/7

A 6yo scratch bred horse from Pilgrim Stables and bred by nwoprizes.  Claimed as a 3yo and still improving.  Ran a good race despite being 4th last time but I think he may struggle to repeat that kind of form here.

DRUNKEN PIRATE(KY)

Trainer: tbgifted

(Dehere x Woodman x Ela-Mana-Mou(IRE))

Odds: 10/1                  Earnings: 352,325                  Runs/Wins: 16/5

A 4yo colt from Tbgifted Stables and bred from a C class mare (Impulsion).  Has had a pretty up-and-down career so far, which is fairly normal for route horses, but seemed to come into his own in his last race.  On that form he could easily make it a 1-2 for the 4 yo’s.  Expect him to make his move after the half way mark.

THEATRICAL PRAYER(IRE)

Trainer: zoz

(Theatrical(IRE) x Seeking The Gold x A.P. Indy)

Odds: 6/1                    Earnings: 234,926                  Runs/Wins: 22/4

A 4yo scratch bred colt from PazJazz Music City Stables (Est Wk 1299).  Another hot 4yo – the new generation is definitely here in force – who managed a 3rd place in a G1 race as a 3yo.  Another late runner who will be hoping for a clear path, so it could be a fairly physical race.    In with a real chance.

KANAKA

Trainer: emanon

(Alysheba x Green Desert x Hawaii)

Odds: 11/1                  Earnings: 1,444,244               Runs/Wins: 42/19

A 7yo scratch bred horse from Emanone Stables.  He’s had a great career culminating in victory in G1-The AFC2 Special over 2 miles at the end of last year.  He’s had 5 wins in a row but may find himself outpaced over this shorter distance – but then he hasn’t really been pushed for a while.

CRUNCHBOX(KY)

Trainer: sdmf

(Saint Liam x A.P. Indy x Storm Cat)

Odds: 15/1                  Earnings: 381,244                  Runs/Wins: 14/4

A 4yo colt from Black Label Stables and bred from an E class mare.  Apart from his very first race this colt has never been out of the top 4, a testament to his trainer and determination.  Probably not as good as some of the other 4yo’s here but certainly one to watch out for if he has recovered from his last race which was slightly disappointing.

RAMA(KY)

Trainer: super11

(Kingmambo x Pleasant Colony x Nijinsky II)

Odds: 12/1                  Earnings: 167,766                  Runs/Wins: 18/4

A 4yo scratch bred colt from Evil Than The Evil Empire! and bred by twoofus.  A second entry from this owner and whilst he is probably the most inexperienced runner here he should be given more than a passing consideration due to his recent consistency.  I don’t think he’ll win here but he wont be too far away.

Summary

A race full of good runners as you would expect.  I’m expecting the 4yo’s to pretty much clean up – just not sure of the order.  Lightwork(IRE), Theatrical Prayer(IRE) and Drunken Pirate(KY) all look good … but the mare CSI Super (ranked 5th in her class), or Kanaka (ranked 3rd in his class) could definitely put a hole in my theory …. And let’s not forget we have a very good favourite in Dragonstone too.
