Kicking It Up For The MORE KICK Special Stakes

This week in Tennessee it’s time for the 4yo and up mares to step up and take center stage for The More Kick Special Stakes. This 6.5F race over a fast dirt track brings the ladies out in their Saturday best for a share in the $40,000 purse. A full field of 14, very well matched mares will give everyone who watches a very exciting race.

Let’s meet the field.

In post position 1 Hey Hayley will be awaiting the starting bell. This 5yo mare by Saratoga Six and out of Clever Rate and trained by rharfo is coming into the race with odds of 9/1. A dominating force in allowance races, she has only won one stakes race back in May ’07. With her two highest speeds on off dirt tracks, she seems to prefer the mud over the fast dirt. Don’t count her out, though, she has the ability to run the speeds necessary to give the others a run for their money.

Crestfallen II will be standing tall in post position 2. Out of the dam Mine Crest and sired by Mr. Greeley, this 6yo mare has only finished out of the money one time in her total of 17 starts. She easily won her last start with a good speed of 111 and 1 1/4 lengths seperating her from the rest of the field. I’m a little surprised at her odds of 10/1 as I’m sure her trainer, simstar, is as well. She is one to watch and quite capable of causing an upset at the finish line.

The longshot of the field, Chosin One, will be starting in post position 3. Frozin Chosin sired this 4yo mare out of Power Play. Definitely outclassed in this race, and I can say that without fear of reprisal since I’m her trainer, she is mainly in it for the experience and the hopes that she’ll perk up. A good allowance runner, this will probably be her last stakes race unless she begins to show more speed. It saddens me to say that I agree with the handicappers for putting her at odds of 31/1. I’ll still bet on her, though.

Post position 4 will hold Elyod’s Cause. At 4 years old and winning 50% of her 18 starts, this mare by Giant’s Causeway and out of Mother Niner has the makings of a great racer. Only out of the money twice and never finishing any more than 3 1/2 lengths off the leader, expect to find this girl somewhere in the front of the pack, if not leading the way to the finish line. Past performances prove that she is able to turn on the speed when necessary however, she has never won over 6.5 furlongs. Trainer grimmie hopes she will grab her first 6.5F win in this race and with odds of 8/1 she has a good chance of doing just that.

Chomping at the bit in post position 5 will be Smokin Lois, a 5yo mare out of Lois Without Echo and sired by Smoke Glacken. Her trainer, molwr, hopes to forget a disappointing year in 2007 where Smokin Lois only brought home one win and hopes to shake off a sad loss in her only start of 2008, coming in 12th. Smokin Lois has proven that she has the speed necessary to pull off a win here in Tennessee and the handicappers feel she can do it with odds of 7/1.

Another mare sired by Smoke Glacken will be in post position 6, Smoke in the Mine. This 6yo mare has only run 6.5F three times, twice on the turf and once on the dirt, and has failed to pull off a win at this distance. She has shown that she is capable of running speeds over 100 but doesn’t seem to be very consistent with her performances. curlypuub is hoping that she will prove the handicappers wrong and give someone a nice payout with odds of 24/1.

Quietful will be hoping to make some noise when she bounds out of post position 7. Real Quiet sired this 4yo mare out of Full A.P.. Her last 4 times out brought home very disappointing losses but these losses contradict just what this mare is capable of. Winning at distances of 7 – 8 furlongs and several stakes wins under her girth, she may be able to fool everyone and be the first to cross the finish line. Her trainer, pennfarm is praying that she proves to be better than her 19/1 odds as she very well is.

Post position 8 holds worldwide’s Wheels of Steel. A 4yo mare by Cryptoclearance, Wheels of Steel is being brought back down to ungraded stakes after several unsuccessful attempts at graded. The 6.5 furlongs should pose no problem with this horse as she has won easily over distances just a little longer. If she stays consistent with her speeds as she has in her last few outings she should be able to pose a threat here in Tennessee. She heads into the race with odds of 11/1.

Song Girl, in post position 9 hopes to be singing a song of victory at the wire. Winning 1/3 of her races on the dirt and a top speed of 111 give this 5yo mare by Sadler’s Wells a good chance of bringing home the money for peeps8. She’ll be hoping to shake off her disappointing loss in her last outing and repeat her victory in the Jan. 19th VIXEN PROSPECTOR which was the same distance and track conditions as this race. Her odds of 8/1 show that the handicappers believe that she has a good chance of repeating that victory.

Waiting in post position 10 is Donkstrike, a 5yo mare by Silver Deputy. She has only ran in one stakes race in her 31 starts and came in 3rd for her efforts. She’s only broken 100 in a couple of races but has plenty of experience with 6.5 furlongs. If experience instead of speed dominates this race then craftygirl may have a winner with Donkstrike. The handicappers seem to feel that she doesn’t have much of a chance giving her 18/1 odds but don’t count her out. Anything can happen in the world of horse racing.

When it comes to speed, Kacymygirl, in post position 11, is definitely no stranger. Capable of consistently producing speeds of 100, this 6yo mare by Macabe will be one to keep your eyes on to be right at the front of the pack. Although more often run at 6 and 7 furlongs, 6.5F should pose no problem for this girl. One fly in the ointment may be despite her speed, she hasn’t won a race since Sept. 07. nj50 is hoping that Kacymygirl will be able to pull of the win and the handicappers believe she can with odds of 6/1.

Redshaft in post position 12, is tied for the favorite with Kacymygirl with 6/1 odds as well. Mineshaft sired this 5yo mare out of Jerry’s Sienfeld who is quite capable of pouring on the speed herself. It seems as though she has also been off her game recently with a few disappointing losses but lenny16 knows this horse well and believes that you will be seeing her come flying through the finish first. If she can shake off her recent bout of bad luck, I don’t see her having any problem doing just that.

In post position 13 is Unbridled Zip. A 4yo mare by City Zip and out of Ferdiima, this horse has the ability to conquer all. Just point her in the direction of the wire and she’ll do the rest. Winning 13 out of her 25 starts and only placing out of the money twice shows that this mare can get the job done. james22 will be cheering her on as she storms from the gate and tries to take the field by storm. I find it surprising that she comes into this race with odds of 9/1.

Rounding out the field in post position 14 is Reina Jade. This 4yo mare by Giant’s Causeway does not have much experience on the dirt but has the speed and ability to overcome experience. She has won 3 of her 7 starts on the dirt. 2aussie is hoping to make this her 4th win on this fast track. Her odds of 10/1 reflect her lack of dirt experience but don’t let that fool you. She has just as good a chance as the rest of the bunch to bring home the win.

This is a great bunch of horses in this race and it’s proving to be a difficult race to call. I’m going to have to go against the handicappers and say it’s going to be Unbridled Zip x Reina Jade x Crestfallen II. I’ll probably fall off my chair if Chosin One is anywhere up there but I don’t really see that happening. This should definitely prove to be an exciting race and good luck to all trainers.

Best wishes and happy racing.
