Here we have a great race in the Breeders’ Bowl for those horses that are 3 year olds and up which will be run over one mile on the turf this Saturday. The G1, Breeders’ Bowl Mile has drawn a well decorated field of horses all of which are prior Graded winners which includes ten G1 winners and four G2 winners. This full field of fourteen horses only has one 3 year old running this year while the rest of the field are all 4 and 5 year old horses. The quality of the field is very tight for this race and the winner is going to be hard to pick in this race as every horse in this field has a good chance at getting to the wire first and making their way over to the winners circle to collect their prize money and prestigious accolade added to their résumé. I had the opportunity to speak with some of the owners/trainers prior to the race and we will see what some had to say about their horses. The morning line odds are now in place and the post positions have been drawn for the running of this year’s G1, Breeders’ Bowl Mile here in California on Saturday.

Breaking from the inside gate will be this 4 year old Bay Gelding who is a scratch bred (KING KAMEHAMEHA x MONTJEU x DANZIG) that has fifteen prior starts and has hit the boards in thirteen of his races. Back in July of this season we saw him run in the G1, The Suffix in Newmarket of which he exploded when he found himself in eleventh at the third call to drive home for the win by a head. He then made his way to Berkshire for his most recent trip to the track on 09/26/2021 when he 8 furlongs in the G1, The Queen Liz Stakes. He ran another nice race that day as he tried to close the gap in his stretch run and was able to weave his way up to cross the wire in second with a 115 speed rating. This horse has never missed the boards during his 2021 campaign and he looks to find another score here on Saturday with jockey, T Ace from Texas in the saddle to help guide him across this California turf. This jockey will most likely keep his horse out of trouble early and make his move late in the game when they head out to the track to the cheers of an excited crowd.

Coming out next in the post parade will be this 5 year old Bay Horse that was sired by Frankel who in fifteen starts has found the boards in twelve of his races. He found a nice G1 win this season back in May of this year in Kentucky when he went 9 furlongs in the G1, The Woody Ford. He came off the turn nicely in this race and came from over eight lengths back to find the wire first by a neck. He then ran third in the G1, Eddie O Cap here in California and then went to run in his most recent outing on 09/04/2021 in Paris in the G1, Maudin Cup at the distance of 8 furlongs. He stayed just off the leaders in this race and in his stretch run was able to make his way up the line to cross the wire in second with a 116 speed rating. He now returns back to California this Saturday and the owner is calling upon a reliable jockey, R Dowell who has rode this horse successfully in a couple of prior starts. This horse has only missed hitting the boards one time this season and this jockey is going to try and put him on the boards again when they break from their gate representing the Empire State Racing residency.
| 3 | MONSIEUR CADET | ENG | 5M | 24flat | F Gossett | 19 | 7 | 68% | $2,874,796 | 328.00 | 7/1 |
Here we have a 5 year old Bay Horse that was sired by Pivotal who in nineteen prior starts has found the boards in thirteen of his races. Back in January of this season he struck big against a field over in Dubai when he ran in the G1, Sand Castle Fee Duty when he got to the wire first for a nice G1 win. He was then second in the G1, The Woody Ford and then threw a clunker when he ran here in California going 9 furlongs in the G1, Eddie O Cap of which he faded in the stretch for home to cross the wire in fifth. This lead up to his most recent trip to the track which came on 08/21/2021. He went 8 furlongs in Germany in the G2, The Rennen Mile where he powered his way to the wire first in a gate to wire trip and finished up with a very respectable 120 speed rating. The eyes are now on the prize in California and the owner is calling in one of this horse’s favorite jockeys and local fan favorite here in California as F Gossett will take the mount for this race. They have paired up together many times in prior races and done very well together. Look for much the same here out of this team when they head to the turf on Saturday representing the Empire State Racing residency.

Next out we come to this 5 year old Bay Horse that was sired by Nathaniel and that is out of the mare Nostrovia of which the owner has expressed his excitement in this breeding mare as he feels “there is certainly some juice, consistency, and grit in the bloodines”. This horse that she has produced for this race is described as “Something of a poor man’s Seabiscuit miracle” and early on in his career the owner shared that he had lost faith and hope in his horse before he turned a new leaf and started to look like a completely different horse. I must agree that this horse has come a long way from earlier in his career of which he was running on the Claiming circuit. This horse has blossomed into a multiple G2 winner with wins in the G2, The Frisco Mile here in California and the G2, The Yasuda Mile in Japan. He then ran in the G1, The Suffix in Newmarket where he finished up in fourth and then came out for his most recent trip to the track in Ontario where he went 8 furlongs in the G1, Canada Mile. He put up a good effort in this race and was closing the gap from over seven strides back at the third call to get a second place finish at the wire with a 113 speed rating. In the saddle for that race was jockey, M Zeus from Spain and he will get the call to saddle up here in California on Saturday with this horse. They have proven in the past that they can work well together and the owner is putting his faith into this jockey that he can bring his horse home again in this one. They will saddle up in the paddock and make their way out to the turf representing the Universal Racing Club residency.
| 5 | BREAK AWAY DUNK | ENG | 3M | dochman | GD Mate | 12 | 4 | 67% | $1,166,100 | 224.00 | 28/1 |
Coming out next will be this 3 year old Bay Colt that was sired by Frankel that in twelve prior starts has found the boards in eight of his races. In speaking with the owner “being eligible for the race, (you) have to take a shot” I must agree with that statement. He also pointed out to me that “Dunk’s last win was last year in the Breeders’ Bowl Juvenile Turf” and he reflected on that big win with me and shared although his horse has not won again since that race that he is still happy with his efforts this season. In January this horse found a third place finish in the G1, The Jean Brat in Deauville and another third place finish in August here in California in the G2, Boston Derby. His most recent trip to the track was on 10/10/2021 when he ran again here in California in the G2, Cherry Limb Stakes of which the owner described as a “clunker” for his horse and was displeased with his horse’s efforts in this race when he crossed the wire way back in tenth with a 108 speed rating. Despite that poor effort the owner is claiming his rightful spot in this race and is looking for a rebounding effort out of his horse. For the ride the owner has contracted with jockey, GD Mate from out of New Zealand to fly in and take the mount up top. This pair will be saddling up in the paddock and coming out in the post parade to the cheers of an excited crowd.
| 6 | IFF YOU PLEASE | ENG | 5M | lah | H Artack | 23 | 8 | 61% | $1,336,889 | 160.00 | 9/1 |
Next we have this 5 year old Bay Horse that was sired by Iffraaj who has twenty-three prior starts and who has found his way to the boards in fourteen of his races. This prior G2 winner has remained winless this season but he has come close a few times in several of his Graded trips. In January he ran second in the G3, Intercontinental Trophy in New Zealand with a nice 117 speed rating in that race. Two races back he ran in July in the G1, The Suffix in Newmarket where he lost his lead very late in his gate to wire attempt to place second by a mere head with a 116 speed rating. Then he ran in his most recent race on 09/04/2021 when he traveled 8 furlongs in Paris in the G1, Maudlin Cup. He did not show up with his best of efforts in this race and never seemed to find his footing or placement in this race where he likes to be. He seemed to give up after the third call and dropped from third at the third call all the way back to ninth when he crossed the wire with a 109 speed rating. This horse will need to show up much improved over that most recent outing and the owner is calling in a familiar jockey, H Artack from Turkey who was up top for this horse’s last start. Both horse and jockey will need to show up with their game in check if they are to spoil and out muscle the field here on Saturday. The owner is in hope and stated “he’ll be gunning for sure and can be dangerous if left alone”. Horse and jockey will saddle up in the paddock and make their way to their post draw representing the Empire State Racing residency.
| 7 | ELVES AMONG US | FR | 4G | bukowski | J Stivers | 19 | 11 | 84% | $1,162,470 | 224.00 | 12/1 |
Here we see a 4 year old Bay Gelding that was sired by Elvstroem who has nineteen prior starts and found his number lit up on the boards in sixteen of those races. This horse has been very kind overall to his owner this season gathering up three G2 wins. I had the opportunity to speak with the owner of this horse and he shared his concerns that his horse may not make the cut for the field, “and (I) only decided to run a few days before entries closed”. Well he made the cut and now the owner has to formulate his game plan. One of his concerns he shared was “I know there’s a ton of pace that might jeopardize his front end tactics, but has shown some tractability in a few of his G2 wins”. Back in April of this year this horse ran in the G2, The Sundown Mile in Surrey and picked up the win by a well timed neck at the wire. He had a couple of off races and then in August he came out again in Surrey and ran in the G2, The Celebration where he destroyed the field with a 119 speed rating for the win. His most recent trip to the track came on 09/27/2021 in Paris where he went 8 furlongs in the G2, The Daniel Wild of which he made a nice gate to wire trip to pick up the win by one and three quarters with a 115 speed rating. This horse will come into Saturday’s race with back to back G2 wins and the rider in both of those races was jockey. J Stivers from Deauville who will again get the call on Saturday to take the ride up top. Horse and jockey looked tough together in their last two outings and the owner quoted to me “you have to be in it to win it, so we’re in it” and I know he really wants a win here in this big race when they step onto the turf representing the Empire State Racing residency.
| 8 | OASIS ON THE SEA | ENG | 4M | stockswami0 | D Givins | 14 | 5 | 57% | $1,343,110 | 276.00 | 14/1 |
Next out we have this 4 year old Bay Colt that was sired by Oasis Dream who has fourteen prior starts and has found the boards in eight of his races. This horse is a multiple G1 winner and he picked up a nice one back in April in Hong Kong when he got up for the win in the G1, The Champions Mile with a respectable 119 speed rating. He came back out in July in Newmarket in the G1, The Suffix of which he did not show his best effort and crossed the wire back in sixth with a 109 speed. Then came his most recent start which was on 09/04/2021 going 8 furlongs in Paris in the G1, Maudlin Cup. He was back on his game for this race when by the third call he had moved into second and a little more than three off the lead. He showed a powerful stretch run in this race to get up for another nice G1 win with a 118 speed rating for his efforts. With two G1 wins in his last three starts the owner has his eye set on California for his horse and has called up jockey, D Givins from out of Kentucky to come in and take the trip across the turf with his horse on Saturday. This is a seasoned veteran jockey, but he has never worked with this horse before. The owner has been giving instructions to the jockey and getting them some breezes out on the track together in preparation for this race. They will saddle up together and make their way out to the turf to the cheers of an excited crowd.
| 9 | GOODTOBETHEDRAGON | IRE | 4M | aaafarms | B Ball | 16 | 9 | 75% | $2,458,720 | 288.00 | 8/1 |
Coming out to the track next we will see this 4 year old Bay Colt who is a scratch bred (SEA THE STARS x KINGMAMBO x DANEHILL) who in sixteen prior starts has seen his number on the boards in twelve of his races. This is a multiple G1 winner and a horse that has found trips to the winners circle in two starts this season. He got up for the win in Kentucky back in June when he went 8 furlongs in the G2, The Sparkler Handicap with a career high 118 speed rating. Then we jump to his two most recent starts, one of which was in September in Paris when he ran in the G1, Maudin Cup were he finished third with a 116 speed. Then he went out for his most recent outing on 10/02/2021 in Kentucky going 8 furlongs in the G1, The Sourball Mike. He stayed close to the front and just off the leaders in this race. He picked off a couple of horse coming up to the third call of the race and when he turned for home he found another gear to put away this field by two and a quarter at the wire with a 117 speed rating. This horse has been showing some pretty consistent speed rating this year and has only had one clunker of a start which came back in August in the G2, Fried Rice Mile in Japan. Throw out that race as a bad day and you have to look at this horse as big competitor in this field. The owner expressed to me, “the race looks to be very competitive with a deep and talented field”. Well said and he is correct in his observations with his horse also being one of those competitive horses in the field. The owner will be calling in jockey, B Ball who is flying in from China and that did pass all Covid-19 screenings upon his arrival. He will saddle up with this horse on Saturday in the paddock and make their way out at post time to the turf representing the Empire State Racing residency.
| 10 | JUSTIWELLS | KY | 4M | swanseared | J Ledwith | 15 | 7 | 93% | $1,101,011 | 278.13 | 8/1 |
This is a 4 year old Bay Colt who is a scratch bred (JUSTIFY x SADLER’S WELLS x FAPPIANO) who in fifteen prior starts has found the boards in fourteen of his races. That one and only miss on the boards came when he ran in his début Maiden race as a 2 year old of which I am happy to ignore. He has multiple Graded wins and been close in several others. He was second in the G2, Confederate Stakes in May of this year and grabbed another second place finish in Ontario in the G2, The Edward’s Kingdom in June. He came back out in July in New York and went 8.5 furlongs going gate to wire for the win in the G2, Fivestarnick Handicap with a 118 speed rating. Then he went back to Ontario for his most recent start which came on 09/12/2021 in the G1, The Canada Mile. He showed up sharp for this race when he once again went gate to wire for the win by two and put up a 116 speed rating in that race. In speaking with the owner he stated to me about his horse, “Pure speedball and hope he is good enough and gets the lead”. Those back to back Graded wins going gate to wire in both races does make the owners point very clear. He wants his horse out of gate quick and on the lead in this race. The field needs to watch this horse and not let him put too much distance on them early in the race. The owner has placed the call to secure the services of jockey, J Ledwith who is coming in from Paris to saddle up with this horse for Saturday’s race. The owner has instructed him that he wants his horse out in front early and that is where I would expect to see him in this race if he gets a good start out of the gate representing the Empire State Racing residency.
| 11 | FAST AT DAWN | IRE | 4M | stockswami13 | A Jolly | 14 | 5 | 79% | $1,809,815 | 320.00 | 13/1 |
Next we will see this 4 year old Bay Colt that was sired by Dawn Approach who has fourteen prior starts and that has eleven hits on the boards for his efforts. He is a multiple G1 winner and has several other Graded wins to his credit. In February this horse ran here in California in the G1, The Road Kill Mile where he found himself way back in tenth at the third call. When he turned for home this late closer found a new gear to get up for the win by a half. He then came back out in Victoria to run in the G1, Sydney Mile. Once again he was way back and in twelfth at the third call and he fired again in his stretch run to get up for the win with a 119 speed rating. Then in June he ran in Berkshire in the G1, The Queen Sam of which he missed the boards as he crossed the wire in fifth. His most recent start then came on 09/26/2021 when again he returned to the track in Berkshire to travel 8 furlongs in the G1, The Queen Liz Stakes. He had another rough trip across the turf in Berkshire when he again failed to fire in back to back races and crossed the wire in a disappointing seventh with a 109 speed rating. Perhaps the track at Berkshire was just not to the flavor of this horse and he has also never won on that track in other prior starts. Perhaps coming to the turf here in California will get this horse back on track and we will see better speed figures and a better performance than that in his last two starts. For the ride the owner is calling in seasoned jockey, A Jolly from Louisiana to come in and take to the irons with his horse. This pair will saddle up in the paddock and make their way out to the turf to the cheers of an excited crowd.

Coming out to take his place in gate number twelve we will see this 5 year old Bay Gelding that was sired by Frankel. He has twenty-three prior starts and has found a place on the boards in eighteen of his races. He is a G2 winner and he is still in the hunt for his first G1 win. Back in March of this year we saw this horse go out in Victoria to go 10 furlongs in the G2, The Victoria Cup where he tore up the turf for a nice win by over two lengths. In July he ran second in the G1, Eddie O Cap here in California with a nice 116 speed rating. He had a bad start in August in Illinois when he ran eighth in the G1, Windy City Turf Classic. He then came out for his most recent start on 09/27/2021 in Paris going 9.5 furlongs in the G2, Euro Grand Prix. At the third call of the race he was way back in ninth place and eleven lengths off the lead. He turned for home and made up a lot of ground but could not find the lead as he crossed the wire in second with a 113 speed rating. This horses seems to like those big late closing charges down the stretch for the wire and that is what I think jockey, K Ledwith from Japan will try to do with this horse late in the game. This horse seems to have a little issue in constancy and we will need to see how he shows up for this race on Saturday in the Breeders’ Bowl. If he is on point and gets a good trip he could show up a contender when they break from their gate to the cheers of an excited crowd.
| 13 | TEEN TITAN | KY | 5M | 2legendz | N Lawton | 22 | 7 | 50% | $1,221,391 | 256.00 | 11/1 |
Next out we will see this multiple G1 winner. He is a 5 year old Bay Horse who is a scratch bred (LEMON DROP KID x POLISH NUMBERS x GRAUSTARK) who in twenty-two starts has seen hits on the boards in eleven of his races. In an interview with the owner over at the stables he commented that he had been racing since the mid-nineties. He also shared that regarding Lemon Drop Kid and his entry “He’s from my favorite horse of all-time, Lemon Drop Kid” and went on to state that “this is probably not his best distance, another half or full furlong would be more suited”. I have seen this horse put up a nice 117 speed at this 8 furlong distance in the G1, The Cobblers Mile here in California back in May of this year when he got up for the win by a neck. Thus I have to say he certainly has the ability to compete at this distance on Saturday. His two most recent races were not of his best of efforts when he ran here again in California in July in the G1, Eddie O Cap of which he finished well back in seventh. Then in his most recent trip he went out on 09/12/2021 in Ontario to go 8 furlongs in the G1, Canada Mile. He was making up ground after the third call but did not have the punch that day to factor heavily against this field as he crossed the wire in fifth with a 110 speed rating. This horse has put up a career high speed rating of 121 in the past and he can be dangerous if he is on top of his game, but will he show up with that kind of run here on Saturday is the question? The owner is calling in jockey, N Lawton from New York to take the ride in this race with his horse. The owner wants this jockey to push this horse hard in this race and make sure the horse knows who is in control up in the saddle when the turn for home representing the Empire State Racing residency.
| 14 | AWESOME GIANTS | KY | 4G | beerkeg1 | R Hansen | 15 | 7 | 53% | $1,422,601 | 173.50 | 8/1 |
Coming out of the far outside gate will be this 4 year old Chestnut Gelding that was sired by Awesome Again who in fifteen prior starts has found the boards in eight of his races. This late bloomer seemed to get his act together towards the end of his three year old season last year and has done nothing but show improvement as he entered into his 4 year old campaign. He has shown he can run on the dirt and equally as well on the turf. He is coming to this race on a hot steak with three wins in a row all at the Graded level. One of those wins came in July on the dirt when he got up for the win in Italy in the G2, Lil’ Leprechaun Mile where he closed nicely with a 118 speed rating. He came back out again in Ireland in August where he threw down another 118 trip to crush the field on the turf with a three length win. Then he was sent back out to the turf for his most recent race in Berkshire where he went 8 furlongs and came up with another 118 speed in the G1, The Queen Liz Stakes where he closed up shop for his third win in a row. One has to say that this horse has been running very consistently for the owner with three 118 speed ratings in a row in his three most recent starts. If you look back to March of this season you will see that this horse ran a career high 121 speed in the G3, Winchester Cap in Argentina. This horse has some speed and he is rolling right now and could be a threat in this race. The owner is calling in jockey, R Hanson again who is also a fan favorite jockey here in California. They have paired together several times in the past and he rode this horse in The Queen Liz Stakes the last time out picking up a G1 win together. This horse has blossomed into a formidable contender for the owner and look for this horse to start pouring on the pressure around the third call of this race if he gets a good trip when they travel this 8 furlong course on Saturday representing the Drunken Jockey Club residency.
Good luck to all owners and horses!
Skippy’s Watch List
9-Goodtobethedragon: Nice G1 win with a 117 last time out. Does he show up here in California?
10-Justiwells: Has back to back Graded wins. Does he make it three in a row?
14-Awesome Giants: Hot Steaking on both turf and dirt. Does he get number four in a row?
Tarton’s Long Shot
8-Oasis On The Sea: I kind of wanted to put this horse on my “Watch List”, but at 14/1 in the morning line he looked like a good long shot choice in this field that could upset some other contenders here on Saturday. He has only been off the boards once this season and in his last trip out in Paris he popped with another big run with a 118 speed rating. He deserves a look in this race and I am going to give him the opportunity on some of my exotic tickets when I head to the betting window.
Bonus Pick: For my contributors bonus pick I am selecting horse #14 Awesome Giants.
Thanks for the write up!
Nice win keg! I thought I had it.
