Let’s get the Breeders’ Bowl started with the Juvenile Turf Sprint!
Welcome to the Breeders’ Bowl first race! Today we have a talented field of 14 runners going for glory in the Juvenile Turf Sprint which is scheduled to run at 8:30 AM (seriously!?!?) on Friday November 5th, 2021. The weather is prefect, the silks pressed, the horses sharp. This is a very talented field of 2 year olds and it will be hard to pick a winner between them. So without further ado, lets get to the horses!
| 1 | TREACHEROUS KING | JPN | Colt | etihad | T Price | 1 | 1 | 100% | $33,720 | 9/1 |
From the stables of rwhisper, comes this first horse who just recently broke his maiden. He’s the lightest raced horse in this field but you take a chance when you can! Rwhisper states “Take one lucky Sire Card (Animal Kingdom) and at least find a half decent Mare in the ‘pool’ and if your luck still holds, you come out with Treacherous King. He ran a solid enough 84 and change to lose the maiden tag at the first attempt and whilst looking for a follow up race, I noticed there was an empty slot in the BB Juvy Turf Sprint. It may be a little soon after the first race and I may regret it if he comes back needing a long lay off but these chances rarely come around for relatively ‘young’ stables and I’m of the mind that you don’t get noticed sitting in the safe seats. If he isn’t up to the job, he’ll go back to a longer prep (Next year’s English Derby is the goal) – and you never know.”
| 2 | DRAMA IN TAMPA | FL | Colt | webdesign | F Mac | 7 | 3 | 86% | $66,516 | 25/1 |
Drama in Tampa is up against it, although you never know in this game. He’s by a bargain sire, out of a decent stakes winning mare. He’s so far run solely on the dirt and has been claimed twice in the last three races. Damside is overwhelmingly dirt and hasn’t produced much besides two stakes placed runner, but again, on the dirt. His current trainer states: “Claimed him two back, had a solid first out for me. Was planning a surface change next outing as there is turf in the DS line (El Prado) and this sire (Big Drama) has popped on a couple of turf runners. So by happenstance, I came across the early entries for this race while looking for a BB spot for another horse in a different race. Saw the entry list was light and he had just enough points to qualify, and said, what do I have to lose? So dollar and a dream as they. Maybe a little Gear Jockey-like comparison who runs in the BC Turf Sprint. In August he was running Optional Claimers and now he’s in the BC.”
| 3 | TURF STORY | AUS | Colt | atw11 | T Loesch | 6 | 2 | 67% | $288,500 | 15/1 |
Turf Story is a modestly bred colt out of a Stakes Placed mare who began his career in the claiming ranks and shot upwards from there. He’s exceeded his expectations for trainer atthewire! He won the G2 Coventry Steaks in June with an 86 SP but faltered the next two tries albeit at G1 level.
| 4 | WOODEN BRIDGE RD | FR | Colt | atw10 | D Givins | 5 | 2 | 80% | $149,580 | 15/1 |
The second of Atthewire’s entries is this son of Birchwood out of a stakes producing Exceed and Excel mare (sound familiar?) didn’t start his career in claims but went straight to a N2L and won. After winning a listed, he tried graded but could do no better than a third in a G2 and a second in a G2 with his fastest SP coming at 5.5 furlongs.
| 5 | LUKASNITZ | AUS | Filly | peluche | B Renfroe | 4 | 2 | 75% | $167,250 | 11/1 |
The first filly in this race is an ace homebred who has won half her races and placed in one more. She’s by Snitzel out of a Invincible Spirit mare who relished 5f. Ace commented that “She comes from a long line of mine (I’m still breeding her great-granddam!). I tried her a mile last out just to see, but her dam side is pretty solidly set in turf sprint so I did have that in mind when I bred her. I think the short distance will suit her.”
| 6 | BLISTERED TAIL | FR | Colt | scoobs2021 | R Scoobi | 6 | 4 | 83% | $567,220 | 7/1 |
This G1 winning scratch bred colt by Wootton Bassett has run 6 times winning 4 for the scoobi stables. Although the horse has never run at 5 furlongs, it has done best at sprints an had only run out of the money when stretched out to 7 furloungs. His fastest SP was 92 when winning the G1 Middlepark Stakes at 6 furlongs on turf. Scoobi states “horse is talented and fast, trains really well, had 1 bad run and will love this distance. Theres so many that will be tough in this one. Red Storm Never and Microbe are 2 of many (that are competitive)”. The future seems bright.
| 7 | WINDY TAPS | IRE | Colt | spandau | R Metcalf | 4 | 2 | 75% | $59,870 | 22/1 |
The second rwhisper entry is in out of a stakes placed mare by Gale Force Ten. As he’s more eloquent than me, I’ll let him take over: “If someone offered you Oasis Dream x Galileo x Pulpit, you’d be quite a happy bunny. Windy Taps includes them in the pedigree but all are ‘sons of’. Gale Force Ten isn’t in the ‘most desirable’ category and can be picked up for Bargain Bred prices but his progeny boast a 60%+ win ratio. Windy Tap’s mare had a couple of Stakes places to her name and went on to run back to back 110 figures over 10 furlongs…on different surfaces. Windy showed his Mom’s love for the off track has been passed down the gene line when winning his race, 2 back and would have preferred a bit of cut in the surface this time. He ran a plucky 4th in Group company last time and the jockey will be told to hang on to him this time before letting him have his head in the late stages. He’s up against it in this quality field – but sometimes, it’s a funny old game is this racing malarkey!”
| 8 | BUGZILLA | AUS | Colt | guru16 | F Gossett | 5 | 4 | 100% | $225,590 | 10/1 |
Bugzilla, is a son of So You Think out of a cadet Invincible Spirit mare who has thrown some nice listed winners in the past. This is her first graded winner. Trainer guru had expertly trained this horse to four wins and a second out of 5 starts. His highest SP was a 87 run at 5.5 furlongs.
| 9 | PROPER JOB | AUS | Colt | les111 | P Greggor | 4 | 2 | 75% | $49,416 | 14/1 |
Proper Job is a modestly bred horse from the les111 stables. He ran an 85 going 5.5 and 84 when trying 6 furlongs, winning both times. The distance will suit him. He’s getting better at the right time but to win against this talented field he will need to really step up.
| 10 | MONTRESOR | JPN | Colt | bb | A Jolly | 5 | 3 | 80% | $274,110 | 7/1 |
Spinround was kind enough to provide a comment for her horse and she states it best: “Montresor was a gift from my dear friend awkwardandchai. He and I have gifted horses from time to time throughout the years and I believe this is the best horse either of us has ever gifted one another. He’s out of a really nicely bred mare who, as often happens, was a disappointment on the track but has been a good producer in the shed. My biggest concern re: Montresor in this spot is that he’s never run 5f. He was a 2x winner at 6f including a listed and was also 2nd in a G2 at that distance. I honestly thought with his pedigree that he would excel going 8f+ but his last race was disappointing so we are regrouping and hoping for a win here.”
| 11 | MICROBE | IRE | Gelding | givenworkouts | O A Haack | 7 | 4 | 57% | $179,280 | 13/1 |
Given’s regally bred Lope De Vega gelding out of graded placed, listed winning and stakes producing Oasis Dream mare has done well at 5f and is the only one in this field who has won a graded race at this distance. Given was kind enough to spare some time and had this to say about his horse: “I was a bit surprised at his G3 win last time out, but he really was tenacious in that race. He’s not as fast on the speed figure scale as some others in here, but he loves the distance, which is a question mark for a lot of them. I’m not expecting a win, but I think he’ll make a good showing of himself.”
| 12 | MEGABUCKS IRISH | GB | Colt | megabucks | K Ledwith | 8 | 3 | 75% | $350,470 | 9/1 |
This Zoustar colt out of a EOY and G1 winning I Am Invincible mare is running for the derbyking stable. The mare, Invincible Irish, is an EOY winner and did best at turf sprints. Megabucks Irish won the G3 Salisbury Medallion with an 84 SP but has not seen the winners circle again in his subsequent 3 starts.
| 13 | LAST CRYSTAL | IRE | Colt | osucowboys | T Case | 11 | 4 | 91% | $276,740 | 6/1 |
Last Crystal is the most experienced horse in the race having already run 11 times this year for trainer crawin8r and his last race just three weeks ago which resulted in a listed placing at 5.5 furlongs running a 91 SP. This son of No Nay Never might be dangerous in this spot.
| 14 | RED STORM NEVER | IRE | Filly | tauntonred | J Ledwith | 5 | 4 | 100% | $821,220 | 5/1 |
The second of two fillies in the race, Red Storm Never is a G1 winning scratch bred by No Nay Never racing for the bristolred stables. She has run 5 times, won 4 and was second once when trying 7 furlongs. Her best SP was a winning the G3 Princess Margo in July where she received a 90 for her effort. Back in April she tried 5 furlongs and got a 75 so I don’t think distance will be a problem for this filly. Her trainer had this to say about her: “Think I only had ever had one G3 2 yr old ever before, she is a lovely filly my first ever G1 2 yr old. Seems like a good filly sprinter so thought it was worth giving her a shot in the sprint. I’m hoping she can stretch out next year but who knows. Blistered Tail seems like the deserving favorite. Last Crystals has good speeds and could be dangerous.”
“I put a bet on a horse to come in at 10 to 9 – and it did! Unfortunately all the others came in at 8:30.” That’s about my luck when handicapping, especially 2 year olds! Nevertheless, I will give it an honest shot against this very talented field.
- Bugzilla – this colt is getting better at the right time.
- Red Storm Never – this filly is talented and I believe we haven’t seen the best of her yet.
- Microbe – has shown his mettle at turf sprints.
Well formatted. Like the trainer links a lot. Interesting trainer comments and excellent analysis. Thanks for contributing to a great event!
Great job Ayla!! Thanks for writing this one up!
