It is time once again for this year’s running of the Breeders’ Bowl. There are many top running horses that have been entered in various races that will run over the California course. There will be a total of sixteen races that will be run this year in the Breeders’ Bowl and we will crown sixteen new winners this year in these prestigious races on Friday and Saturday. The race I will be previewing for you today is the G1, Breeders’ Bowl Dirt Mile which will be restricted to 3 Year Olds and Older. This race will be on Friday and there is no ran in the forecast and thus the track will be listed as Fast Dirt at post time. We have a very well decorated field of horses in this race and they all look ready to compete. A full field of fourteen horses will be making a bid to get up for a win and it appears the field is very tight and any of them could be making their way to the winners circle to pick up their payday at the conclusion of this race. The morning line odds have been posted and the post positions have been drawn for this race. Let us now take a preview of the fourteen horses that will be running in the G1, Breeders’ Bowl Mile here in sunny California on Friday.
| 1 | FLORIDA AFFAIRS | KY | 3M | resting | GD Mate | 13 | 3 | 46% | $820,950 | 256.00 | 30/1 |
Breaking from the first gate will be this 3 year old Light Grey Colt that was sired by California Chrome. This horse has thirteen prior starts with six hits on the boards. He is a multiple G1 winner and he got up in February to win the G1, Vermont Is 4 Lovers and in May he got up for the win in the G1, The Labatts Ontario Oaks. Since that win in May this horse has missed hitting the boards in his three most recent races that followed. His last time out to the track came on 09/25/2021 here in California when he went 6 furlongs in the G1, The Old Name. This race seemed a little short for him and he could never find his timing as he crossed the wire way back in tenth with a 99 speed rating. The added distance should help him on Friday and he will get his regular jockey, GD Mate from New Zealand up top in the saddle. They have work together in many starts and they will be seeking a rebound in performance from that most recent start of which they did not show their best effort. They will be heading out at post time and make their way to their gate representing the East-West Connection residency.
| 2 | NEVA KEE | SAF | 3G | icbomberhot | D Raymond | 12 | 4 | 75% | $564,915 | 160.00 | 24/1 |
Coming out next will be this 3 year old Bay Gelding sired by Royal Mo who in twelve starts has found the boards in nine of his races. He is a Grade Place winning horse but a Graded win has thus far eluded him with several near misses to the winners circle in his Graded trips. He ran second in February in the G1, Vermont Is 4 Lovers, and was third in the G1, Florida Derby. His most recent trip to the track came on 10/02/2021 when he traveled 8 furlongs in New York in the G2, The Bettis Handicap. He made a nice closing effort in this race down the stretch for home as he crossed the wire in second with a 111 speed rating. Jockey, D Raymond was in the saddle for that race and he will again get the call to ride up top here in California on Friday. This familiar pairing will be seeking their first Graded win and the owner has his horse entered with confidence that he can get up and make a big strike on the boards when they break from their gate draw representing the GR Simsters residency.
| 3 | BLYTHENTHEFASTLANE | KY | 3G | asmussen | T Ace | 12 | 6 | 83% | $712,431 | 186.00 | 25/1 |
This is a 3 year old Bay Gelding that is a scratch bred (BERNARDINI x MR. PROSPECTOR x NIJINSKY 2ND) who has twelve prior starts with ten hits on the boards for his owner. This horse ran third in the G1, Arkansas Juvenile and then picked up the win in the G2, The Bluebonnet in Texas and then ran for another win in New York in the G2, Shiny Gem Stakes. His most recent trip to the track was not so favorable when he went 10 furlongs in New York on 08/28/2021 in the G1, Travelers Stakes. After the third call he began to lose ground and faded in his stretch run to cross the wire way back in tenth with a 97 speed rating. This horse likes to run at or near the front and he could never find a favorable place to run in this race. He gets a shot at redemption here in California on Friday and will have jockey, T Ace from Texas in the saddle to once again help successfully guide him on this trip. I would expect the jockey to try and bring his horse to the front early in this race when they break from their post draw to the cheers of an excited crowd.
| 4 | NOTHING TO JUSTIFY | KY | 3M | asrtriplecrown | R Bokie | 13 | 3 | 62% | $1,127,940 | 186.00 | 22/1 |
Next out we have a 3 year old Bay Colt that is a scratch bred (JUSTIFY x SEATTLE SLEW x SECRETARIAT) that has thirteen prior races with eight hits on the boards. He ran third in February in the G1, Vermont Is 4 Lovers and found a win in the G1, Sand Castle Derby in Dubai. His most recent start came on 10/02/2021 when he ran here in California going 10 furlongs in a Listed Stakes, A Day At The Races with URC which was a residency restricted race. He did not show up sharp and ready to go as he failed to fire in his stretch run for the wire. He came in a very disappointing twelfth and was way back as he finished up with a 106 speed rating. For the race here on Friday the owner is calling in jockey, R Bokie from Virginia to come in and take the mount up top. This jockey has a lot of past experience in riding this horse and they have put up some good races together including a G1 win. They will saddle up in the paddock together on Friday and make their way out in the post parade representing the All-Stars Racing residency.
| 5 | GRAY SPIRIT | KY | 3M | aladar | B Renfroe | 10 | 5 | 70% | $665,975 | 199.00 | 18/1 |
We come to this 3 year old Roan Colt that is a scratch bred (TAPIT x MARIA’S MON x SEATTLE SLEW) that has ten prior starts with seven hits on the boards. He ran fifth in the G1, Arkansas Juvenile and then came back out in June to go 8 furlongs in Florida in the G1, The Marino where he held on to pick up the win. His most recent trip to the track came on 10/01/2021 when he went out in Florida to go 7.5 furlongs in a Listed Stakes, Instant Joker Dirt Sprint. He put up a good effort in this race and ran a career high 113 speed rating which was good enough to get him on the boards with a third place finish. The owner is going to be calling upon jockey, B Renfroe to come in and take the ride up top with his horse. This is a familiar jockey to this horse and they have worked well together in prior races. They look to put up another good performance here on Friday together when they break from their gate representing the Empire State Racing residency.
| 6 | BOHO THE OX | KY | 3G | beerkeg0 | R Hansen | 13 | 4 | 38% | $606,072 | 144.00 | 29/1 |
Next out we will be seeing this 3 year old Bay Gelding that was sired by War Front who in thirteen prior starts has found his way to the boards in five of his races. As a two year old back in December of 2020 he found the win in the G1, Movieland Futurity across a sloppy track. He has not yet found a win during his three year old campaign and has finished no better than fourth as a three year old. His most recent trip to the track came on 10/02/2021 when he went 8 furlongs in the G2, The Bettis Handicap in New York. He again had a disappointing trip as he crossed the wire in seventh over four back with a 108 speed rating. The owner is looking for his horse to pop here in California with a good run on Friday and has called in jockey, R Hansen who is a local jockey here in California to come in and saddle up once again with his horse. This is the favorite contracted jockey for this horse and they need to come out this time and prove they can find their way back to the boards in this race when they break from their post draw representing the Drunken Jockeys Club residency.
| 7 | INTO OUTCROSSES | KY | 4M | givenfinal | Z Edwards | 18 | 8 | 78% | $2,582,615 | 208.00 | 5/1 |
Here we find a 4 year old Bay Colt who is a scratch bred (INTO MISCHIEF x DEPUTY MINISTER x FORTY NINER) that in eighteen starts has found the boards in fourteen of his races. This horse has shown his owner that he can run on both the dirt and turf surfaces successfully and has picked up G1 wins on both surfaces. This season back in February he won the G1, The February Stakes in Japan and in May he showed up second in the G1, Cosmopolitan Handicap in New York. His most recent trip to the track came on the turf when he ran on 09/12/2021 going 8 furlongs in Ontario in the G1, Canada Mile. He won that race in the 2020 season, but he would not get a repeat win this year as he crossed the wire back in sixth with a 108 speed rating. For Friday’s start here in California this horse returns to the dirt surface and he will have jockey, Z Edwards coming in from Dubai to saddle up for this trip. This horse is looking to rebound here on the dirt track and put together another good run this season when they break from their gate representing the GR Simsters residency.
| 8 | NARPAS SWORD | KY | 5M | cadet5 | A Jolly | 21 | 5 | 71% | $737,805 | 152.00 | 5/2 |
Next to come out in the post parade will be this 5 year old Bay Horse that was sired by Giant’s Causeway. He has had twenty-one career starts and has found the boards in fifteen of his races. This horse is the first and only foal out of the stakes winning mare Sellsword Cadet. This horse has never won a Graded race thus far in his career, but has come very close many times. He is itching for a win on Friday here in California as he goes off as the favorite in the morning line. This horse has not missed hitting the boards since June of 2020 and he looks for another good performance here in California. His most recent start came on 09/05/2021 when he came out in Ontario to travel 8 furlongs in the G2, Middle Ground Mile. He briefly found his way to the front but could not hold on to his lead in the stretch and crossed the wire in second some two strides back with a career high 121 speed rating in that race. If he brings that speed or similar numbers her to California on Friday he will definitely be a threat in this race. He should show some early speed when he breaks from his post draw and he will have a familiar jockey with A Jolly again in the saddle. They have paired nicely together in the past and I look to see this jockey take this horse to the front and give him a hard ride to the finish. They will saddle up and come out in the post parade representing the Empire State Racing residency.
| 9 | ENJOYENCOURAGEMENT | SKOR | 6M | kevoman9 | P Harzheim | 25 | 14 | 84% | $1,480,995 | 160.00 | 9/2 |
Here we have a 6 year old Brown Horse who is a scratch bred (ANY GIVEN SATURDAY x SEATTLE SLEW x NUREYEV) who has twenty-five prior starts in his career and that has hit the boards in twenty-one of his races. Back in February of this year he got up for the win in the G3, The Not Far Stakes in Dubai. Next race he came out in New York in May going 8 furlongs to capture the win in the G1, Cosmopolitan Handicap with a throw down 121 speed. In August he shanked one in the G3, The Long Acres. He then came out on 09/03/2021 for his most trip to the track in Dubai going 8 furlongs in a Local Championship Stakes of which he got up for the win by a half with a 110 speed rating. This horse has only had one bad race this season and he looks to strike the boards here again on Friday. The owner is calling in jockey, P Harzheim who will be flying in from Berkshhire to take the irons in this race. This horse likes to stay close just off the lead and close late in his stretch run. That is what I will expect to see when they come down the final stretch representing the EAAA Racing residency.
| 10 | SPENT ON WEAPONS | KY | 3M | asrstar3 | H Artack | 15 | 4 | 60% | $885,490 | 184.00 | 28/1 |
Next we will see coming out is this 3 year old Bay Colt that is a scratch bred (WAR FRONT x SEATTLE SLEW x HIS MAJESTY) who has fifteen prior starts and has found the boards in nine of his races. This season he found a G1 win in Lousisian going 9.5 furlongs in the All Saints Derby on an off track which secured him a Derby Lock entry into the Bluegrass Derby of which he finished in twelfth. His most recent trip to the track came on 10/02/2021 when he ran in a residency restricted race at the distance of 6 furlongs. He had a poor showing in this race when he crossed the wire back in fifteen place. He needs to show much improvement since that most recent outing and the owner is calling in jockey, H Artack from Turkey who he feels can get the job done here in California with his colt. This jockey needs to find a new spark in this horse to get him to the boards successfully here in California and get this horse out of the gate quickly and to the front. They will come out in the post parade on Friday representing the All-Stars Racing residency.
| 11 | NEW YORK Q | KY | 3M | revnhusker | P Wright | 11 | 4 | 82% | $705,090 | 180.00 | 15/1 |
Here we have a 3 year old Bay Colt that was sired by Nyquist who has eleven prior starts with nine hits on the boards. He found a win back in February in New York in the G3, Gary Asher Memorial Stakes. He was second in the G1 The Labatts Ontario Oaks. But his best time to shine came in his most recent trip to the track on 09/19/2021 in Louisiana when he went 9 furlongs in the G2, LA Derby. The jockey, P Wright was in the saddle and he timed it perfectly to get this horse up for the win by a head and a career high 111 speed rating. Jockey, P Wright from Arizona gets the call again to come in on Friday and take to the saddle here in California. They had a good run together the last time out and the owner is looking for much the same in Friday’s race. This horse usually likes to stay just off the front runner and make his move late in the race. This his how P Wright got the win with this horse in their most recent outing together and that is what I would expect them to try to do again when they get to the third call representing the DelPenn National residency.
| 12 | GOTYOUONCAMERA | KY | 4G | lenny2 | L Radzinski | 19 | 6 | 68% | $4,464,445 | 192.00 | 5/1 |
Next out we will see this 4 year old Brown Gelding that was sired by Gun Runner who in nineteen prior starts has tapped the boards in thirteen of his races. Back in July of 2020 he found a G1 win in Ontario in the G1, Clerk Of Scales Stakes. He picked up a win this season in the G3, The Khartoum Challenge II going 9 furlongs in Dubai. In his most recent trip to the track he went out here in California to go 9 furlongs on 09/25/2021 in the G1, The GoodyGood of which he ran fairly flat with a 117 speed rating to cross the wire in fourth. This horse is looking for another big hit on the boards come Friday here in California and the owner made a call to jockey, L Radzinski from Washington to come in and take the mount up top. Horse and jockey have paired up together many times in the past and thus this jockey should be very familiar as to how this horse likes to travel in his races. This horse likes being at or near the front in his most successful trips and that is where I would expect to see this jockey place this big gelding in the race on Friday. This pair will saddle up in the paddock and come out in the post parade headed to gate number twelve together representing the GR Simsters residency.
| 13 | DRAGON’S DEPUTY | KY | 3M | sansa | O A Haack | 11 | 6 | 82% | $2,077,860 | 354.00 | 13/1 |
Here we have a 3 year old Bay Colt that was sired by Distorted Humor and that is out of the HOF mare Dream Dragon who has produced several G1 winners during her time in the pastures. She has produced another multiple G1 winner in this colt who has won such races as the G1, Let It Begin in Texas and the G1, The Funky Buddha in Florida earlier this season. This horse also ran third in the 2020 Equinics-Albert Einstein last year in Vermont. He is coming out at double digit odds in the morning line, but with the speed ratings I see in his two most recent races I can’t remove him as a viable contender on Friday. His most recent race came on 08/28/2021 in New York at 9 furlongs. He should be well rested to take on this field and although placing fifth in that race with a 116 speed he just might be a surprise in this field. To help guild this colt on his travels will be jockey, O A Haack from Florida who rode this horse successfully In the G2, The Future Stakes. The jockey has some experience in riding this horse in the past and should know to keep him close to the front in this race and wait for the opportunity to make a big move after the third call. They will head out at post time and to their post draw representing the GR Simsters residency.
| 14 | THE FREE WORLD | KY | 3M | carsoncity | F Gossett | 11 | 6 | 91% | $5,379,301 | 500.00 | 10/1 |
There is not much fault to find in this 3 year old Bay Colt sired by Empire Maker and that is out of HOF, EOY, G1 winning mare First Degree Bern. This mare has produced three G1 winners including this colt and has shockingly produced two EOY award winners and three 5M badge earners. The owner has to love this mare and the colt she has produced in this field of competitors. This colt is a multiple G1 winner and 5M badge earner in his own right and even though he is going off at double digit odds he should not be overlooked in this race. He won the G1, Florida Derby which secured a spot in the G1, Bluegrass Derby of which he finished second. He won the G1, Eddie Haskell Stakes in New Jersey and was second in the G1, Travelers Stakes. He came out for his most recent trip to the track on 10/02/2021 in New York where he ran 8 furlongs in the G2, The Bettis Handicap where he put away the field by one and three quarters after a big closing effort in his stretch run with a 113 speed rating. He is getting one of his favorite jockeys in the saddle on Friday in F Gossett who is also one of the top jockeys here in California. This horse likes to close late and with a destructive burst after the third call. Those in front should be watching their rear view mirrors when they turn for home in the stretch run as this horse may be closing in fast as they come down the stretch representing the Northwest Racing Circuit residency.
Good luck to all owners and horses!
Skippy’s Watch List
8-Narpas Sword: That 121 speed rating looks threatening from last race. Does he bring it here?
13-Dragon’s Deputy: Big improvement on speed last two trips. Can he find a big trip here?
14-The Free World: Has not been off the boards this season. Looking for another hit in this one?
Tarton’s Long Shot
3-Blythenthefastlane: He had a rough trip the last time out, but I kind of feel he did not like the distance in that race and came off three straight wins. At 25/1 he could be a horse that could upset some in this field and is worth a spot on some exotic tickets at the betting windows here in the Breeders’ Bowl on Friday. Let’s give him a shot to prove what he can do and see if he has the goods to help us cash some big tickets.
Nice article, Thanks!!
I forgot about the bonus if the contributor can pick the winner. I am going with #8 NARPAS SWORD. Good luck to all owners and horses!
Thanks Skippy!
