It certainly felt like Spring here in Alabama and there was definitely some spring in the step of some of these fillies in the inaugural Warsaw Mile Grade I Stakes. As I mentioned in my preview, there were seventeen horses entered and it certainly looked like a massive jailbreak at the start of the race. There was jostling and bunching up like a huge Rugby scrum but in the end, it was won by TRUE CHANT who along with jockey McKyer ran nearly a perfect race.
The stampede at the beginning of the race was something to behold. It reminded me of the stampedes of the old west with all of those ladies jumping all at once out of the gate. The early lead was take by an early favorite, TIRED WINGS II who looked strong throughout the race until the stretch where she faded to fourth. Tucked in fourth behind the leaders was our eventual winner TRUE CHANT who seemed to be biding her time and not wasting real estate along the rail. By the half, she had moved up to third and then really jumped into another gear at the top of the stretch. It is a good thing that she found that final gear as pre race favorite THE DARK MARK was coming hard behind her. Our winner eased a bit at the wire and made it seem closer than it really was but “MARK looked like a filly to be reckoned with down the road. English bred GYPSY TEARS put up a strong finish to fill out the board in third.
TRUE CHANT who under hot jockey McKyer ran such a nice race that enabled her to gain her 4th victory in only 9 tries. It was her second Stakes win but first on the Graded circuit. She now has nearly half a million in earnings for trainer and owner TGI Stables and looks like she is just hitting her stride.. She ran her fastest race with a sizzling 99.9 SPF and was just a tick under the century mark there. She improved her rank to number eight in the three year old turf classic class.
This looks to be a stepping stone for bigger and better things for this young filly. Many a time, it takes a race like this to really get them going and the next thing you know they are vying for end of the year honors. I for one will be watching and admiring this filly as she finishes up her three year old campaign.
Good luck to all runners!
