Breeders Bowl Distaff G1
It’s always great to be in New Jersey in October for the Breeders Bowl race meeting . The race i have the privilege of covering is the Breeders Bowl Distaff Grade I A mile and one eighth Fast Dirt $2,000,000 Fillies and mares, 3 years old and up . Some of the best dirt classic mares have assembled for this and who wouldn’t for the stake and prestige attached to the race. Win this and you have one of the top mares in the sim for future breeding. This is where the big trainers come to play . Those preying for rain didn’t get their wish it is a glorious day and a firm ,hard track. 1
GR Simsters resident Given Stables: Fire and Blood bring this mare to the races . She is from the stakes placed mare KAMIKAZE and is a 1/2 sister to the stakes placed filly YAMAZAKURA(KY). This mare has a great race record and has shown herself to advantage in graded racing against the best she has had 19 races for 7 wins and in the later half of her 4yrold career has really started to produce the quick times and big sp’s against the best mares. Expect her to race right on the pace from her handy draw and take some beating . I spoke with her trainer at length at the track Thursday morning and here is what he had to say.
Quote: Arawaza is one of those horses that really jumps up and is a pleasant surprise. She had a lot of attitude problems early in her career. She was so lazy as a juvenile that I made the decision to forego her entire 2yo season and debut her as a 3yo. The laziness issues persisted, however, and her first three races were sub par. She broke her maiden in her 4th start, and something clicked at that point. She started making slow, but steady progress, and she string together two allowance wins to close out her 3yo season. Now mind you, I still didn’t even know if she could be a successful stakes performer. She showed flashes of brilliance in the mornings, but many horses do that and never reach their full potential.
Her 4yo season started off with more of a whimper than a bang. She off the board in two stakes races and was a dull 2nd in an allowance sandwiched between those two races. I was almost ready to admit she was simply a decent allowance horse that would make some money but would never fulfil her potential. That quickly changed. In her 4th race of the year, an 8f allowance, she blew the doors off, winning by two lengths with a career best 102 SF. And after the race, she was completely different. There was this confidence that had developed, seemingly overnight, and I knew there would be some fun times ahead. I entered her in a stakes next time out, and she demolished it by two lengths with another career best SF of 105. She was giving me so many good signs that I entered her in a G1, and despite going off at 14/1, I was pretty confident. And for good reason, it seemed, as she took command in the stretch and won going away by nearly three lengths and a 108 SF. After that she ran a very game 2nd in the Smackdown at 9f, won a G1 by a nose, and struggled in her most recent race.
I have mixed feelings going into the Distaff. Despite her amazing ascent this year, her last race may suggest that her campaign may be catching up with her. She seems to be the same filly in the mornings, but many times the tiredness only shows up on race days. On the other hand, perhaps her last race was just a blip on the radar. Either way, I am really proud of this filly for turning her career around and even allowing me to dream of Distaff glory!
2 18841 SEPTEMBER ROYALTY futurestar J White 6/1
From the G1 winning he-mare SEPTEMBER STORM the winner of 26 races and $2,045,862 in stakes comes this 5yrold mare trained by Dixiedotco Racing. She has followed in her he-dams footstep having won 19 races to date and $1,389,550 in earnings. She loves racing at these classic distances and has prospered as well. At 5 this may be one of her last chances for BB glory so her trainer has got her tuned to the minute. She worked impressively at the Thursday hit outs and came back looking great. I spoke to her trainer.
Quote: She’s in the best form of her career right now, and she’s getting up there in age, so this is probably her last chance at the BB, and the right time to take a shot. I’m a little concerned about the abundance of pace, but you have to let her run early. She can survive a duel and keep going when she’s on her game, so we’ll send her out of there and try to put the other speed away. I only wish the race were being run at CA, since she seems to be twice the mare there as at other tracks.
3 105066 ARMED WITH MONEY monksfield P Haynes 11/1
Outstanding 4yrold mare trained by Brundlefly Stables. 11 wins and $3,486,260 in stakes pretty much says it all really . This mare has lead all before her this time last year . She actually won this race along with a few other top G1 races in a winning sequence of 5 races . Her trainer must be scratching his head a little her last 6 races have been a little indifferent . He would be hoping she gets back on track here against this strong field . As the fifth ranked dirt classic mare she has to be given due respect this scribe for one hopes she captures some of her old form as it is always great to watch top horses race. She is a deep closer so will need to be at her best to sweep past these in the stretch . She has the services of one of the top jockeys in the sim and this can only help
Quote: Well it is no secret that AWM has had a pretty disappointing year all in all but I must admit I really didn’t know what to do with her and changed her training schedule numerous times. Could she beat the boys as it was obvious she was better than the gals? Could she go long? Could she run on turf? (haven’t tried this yet and should I switch her to sprinting (like Hancock Pond). Well all in all I think she got a bit fed up on top off the fact she went off the boil through the spring/summer last year and come back firing for the BB title. I can tell you she has not raced sharp since that fateful attempt in Dubai. I just lost patience with her and ran her anyway. The inside scoop is that I came back off Holiday yesterday ready for the entries for
the BB and shock horror the Old Gal has only gone and turned SHARP for me so
Armed with Money is set and ready so there will be no excuses.
She will have a top jock in the saddle (same as last year and always runs well for this guy), decent draw and it looks like plenty of pace up front. Now if you look at her form since last year.
Never been ran sharp since Dubai.
Throw out last time crap jock and hates NY. (3 clunkers)
Time before too far.
Ran OK.
Faced the boys again.
Ran ok ran out of track.
And THAT Dubai race.
So fingers crossed she comes in at a big price.
4 115591 CAT O’ NINE LIVES(KY) austar Q Cassell 15/1
This filly has jumped out of the ground in her latest starts with some very impressive performances including the G1-World Cup Ladies Nine — Restricted over this journey 2 starts back then backed that up with a 2nd in the G1-Three Smokestacks Stakes proving she is right at the right time . Her age will not be a barrier as 3yrolds have won this race before. Her trainer Son Carby Lodge has her ready to go and she will be one of the hardest to beat. Look for her to slot in behind the pace and try to gun them down in the last furlong.
5 95428 BUSH WINS AGAIN waremblem1 P Harzheim 12/1
5yrold mare who has won 11 of her 34 starts and $1,391,458 in earnings . Another who may be having her last crack at a Breeders Bowl race. She has proved a 9f specialist and at the highest level winning or being placed in 5 starts at the distance in graded company . Her dam is the pretty useful MS. NINE who was a stakes winner who has left 2 stakes or graded winners and 1 stakes placed runner. She is trained by Winterfell Racing a resident of GR Simsters . Another who will run on or near the pace so the speed should be on all the way.
Quote: My runner in Bush Wins Again. Tiznow was one of my favorite horses and I always thought his wins in the Breeders Cup were Patriotic being against big name Euro horses. I bred her in commemeration of George W Bushes reelection. She started out slowly, but turned into the best horse I’ve ever owned, including becoming my first GI winner. Her Orange Blossum win is one of my SIM highlights as she took down a very strong field. She has had a lot of setbacks this season and I’ve rested and tried to bring her back into form. She’s had ups and downs before and I hope she has one last run in her, like Billy Chapel in For Love of the Game, one last day of summer. I’d really like to see her get a top 3 for an A ranking but mostly I just want her to run well. She’s old now and may be getting ready for the breeding shed, but maybe, just maybe, she can recapture a little of the magic Saturday afternoon.
6 92530 INTENTTODISTRIBUTE lordpye2 P Bangs 15/1
The Big Oil Conglomerate [Ft. LordPye] runs this RED RANSOM 5yrold mare She may be looking for the race to be a little longer as she has excelled at 10f and longer. With the presence of all the pace runners may turn this into more of a staying challenge than we think. This may play in to this mares hands . She may push the pace and try to run the sprints out of the other runners. She has won 7 from 28 and nearly $1,000,000. Her win 4 starts back in the G1-Movieland Shiny Cup is the best pointer to here prospects.
7 97350 OTTO HISTORY capsized D Givins 5/1
The one that all the other trainers i talked to feared the most in this field and rightfully so. She has won 11 from 22 and $3,583,760 she is the number 1 ranked classic dirt mare in the sim. Trained by another GR Simsters resident Pierchinski Stables One of the runners who would not have minded a wet surface she is also at home on the dry stuff. Three starts ago she won the G1-Go For The Gold Stakes over 9f on an off track with 113sp. She won the G1-The KFC Special also over 9f on a dry track with a 104sp so she will be hard to beat no matter what happens . What ever beats this mare wins the race . Will set the pace and try to lead all the way.
8 130063 TOUGH AS STEEL(KY) pbcash V Gardner 20/1
Her trainer THE EVIL EMPIRE has gone to a lot of trouble to get this mare ready for this and she may be the one for those looking for longer odds. Its all or nothing with this mare putting any money on for a place would be a waste of time as she either wins or comes nowhere having won 8 from 12 so don’t under estimate her she beat a few of these last time out in the G1-World Cup Ladies Classic — Restricted and that’s good running in anybodies language. I spoke to her trainer earlier heres what he had to say
Quote: I am running Tough As Steel instead of Black Tuesday. Tough As Steel is better at the distance, and is probably in a little better form than Black Tuesday. She’s won 5 in a row including a nice win in the World Cup in her first attempt against older runners. This field is tough, with Otto History the girl to beat. I’m not sure if I can win, but I should be flying for home late and will hopefully outrun my odds.
9 96097 BOLD PEGGY conniecpu P Cadigan 9/1
Conniecpu Stables brings this FUSAICHI PEGASUS 5yrold mare She has won 9 from 26 and last time out won the G1-Three Smokestacks Stakes over 9f and only adds to the puzzle when trying to pick to the winner in this mid field runner who may get a drag along just off pace and have a little more than some left for the run home. Odds makers suggest she is a real possibility for the win. She has the services of a top notch jockey who will take advantage of her running style.
10 67319 K’S JOAN BACH verdugote K Ledwith 6/1
Equal 2nd favourite for this. She is a top show she has won G1races at this distance and her trainer Pompeya Thoroughbred Racing Corporation aka ledwith from Hispano Parlante residency he will ride his own charge in this one and he’s not a bad rider at that. By FORESTRY she is a dirt specialist and has won 14 and been placed in 10 from 28 so she can be expected to be in the first three in this so put you money on. Two starts back won the G3-Rose Garden Handicap over 9f in a 105sp has mulyiple100+sp’s and can be expected to add to that here. She has won $2,118,279 in stakes. Will race back of midfield and close late to make this one of the closest finishes this year on sim.
11 124379 ALL THE RICHES(KY) flagdown J Benisz 13/1
3 yrold filly by the mighty SAINT LIAM she is more lightly raced than most in this field but has won 5 from 15 and over $800,000 in stakes already could easily win this but will also go on to greater things in her future career. Nice 2nd in the G1-World Cup Ladies Nine — Restricted behind CAT O’ NINE LIVES(KY) and if you are according that mare a chance you need to look at her to win as well. Trained by Flagdown Stables from the Pastures of Green residency one to watch now and in the future.
12 114988 KATHERINEOFARAGON(FR) gipper7 F Gossett 14/1
Powerhouse 3yrold who has already past the $1,000,000 mark she is from the top producing mare KING OF SPAIN II by HIGH YIELDclassy win last time out in the G2-Cotton Handicap over 8.5f with a 110sp also won the G1-Sister Hen Stakes over 9f 4 starts back and is in the right form his trainer Gipper Stables who i spoke to at the Thursday workouts heres what he said.
Quote: We here at the Gipper Stables are extremely exited about the chances of Katherineofaragon in this Saturday’s Breeder’s Bowl Distaff. She has been a consistent graded stakes contender her whole career at a variety of differences. It is a testament to her heart and desire that she was able to overcome a serious injury in her first start of the year to accomplish what she has this season.
13 111300 SWEET SISTER MERCY zwango1 H Harzheim 9/1
Black Label Stables from the DelPenn National residency brings us this 4yrold mare. The winner of 7 from 22 found her 1st G1 win only in her last start but it was a good win in the G1-Superfilly Handicap over 8.5f in 111sp. By KINGMAMBO and ridden by a top jockey she must be given a show but might find a few of these a little tough. Will get back in the running and look to dive-bomb them in stretch.
14 127321 PRAVDA(KY) super10 R Harzheim 17/1
One of the outsiders in this very even field she can not be disregarded as a winning chance. Trained by the mighty More Evil Than The Evil Empire! who know how to produce a graded winner. Did win the G1-lool Oaks as a three yrold and two starts ago won the G3-Ontario BB Oaks over 8.5f in a 104sp. Has always raced the best and will be in the firing line when the whips are cracking. Mid field runner who will close late.
Quote: I have no idea how Pravda is going to run this weekend. She is sharp and has a professional jock but she also drew way outside but if she is about 6 lengths off the lead at the 2nd call, she might have a shot. She has been pretty frustrating this year, never showing the consistency of her juvenile season. I’m also not sure that extra 1/2 furlong to 9 panels is going to affect her. She is bred to handle the distance but who knows? On the plus side, her speed #’s are going up and she could be sitting on a big one.
I’m not going to make any selections but what i will say is that this is why we all play this game to have a runner on Breeders Bowl Day and i thank those who shared their thoughts on their runners i love how we take pride in our runners give them a personality and think of them as real to us i know i certainly do even with some of my biggest duds good luck to all runners you deserve all the luck in the world
