A field of nine will meet at the Kansas Race Course starting gate for the inaugural Great Plains Breeders Bowl Classic fashioned at one and one quarter miles over a fast main track.  Here are the starters in post position order.

Breaking from the fence will be one of two fillies in the race, Cat Five Cane.  The rangy daughter of Orientate is a dual stakes winner and registered a personal best speed rating of 100 while finishing fifth in a Texas stake last time out.  Trainer Australia (Nextbonus Stables) has enlisted Lloyd Buchholtz to ride his deep closing sophomore on Saturday.  Cat Five Cane has beaten older males before and won her only start at this distance.  Must not be taken lightly.

A top three finish would push Savage Frontier over the half million dollar mark in career earnings.  But the long striding five year old has not raced well lately, having been beaten a total of ninety seven lengths in his last five outings.  Prior to that, the only stakes winning son of Esperero (Forty Niner) won a dirt stake at ten furlongs while posting a 105 speed rating.  This dual graded turf winner has the back class to wake up here for jockey Tony Roberts if trainer Ricdav can straighten him out for this test.

What a clam!  Barndog haltered Shallow Waters(IRE) out of a $5,000 maiden claimer in early March.  Since that time, the dappled gray Daylami(IRE) colt has won six times including five of his last seven starts.  The big three year old has won at nine and twelve panels in his last two tries so the distance here poses no problem.  This will be a serious test of class for Shallow Waters.  Will he pass?  Drop by Saturday to find out.

Number four is the second betting choice at 7-2, Degoldenstorm, from the powerful Rockriver Jim Stables.  Trainer Jim has done a marvelous job managing this guy who is best remembered as the hero of last year’s Breeders Bowl Juvenile Dirt.  The flashy chestnut was a solid third in the Grade II Winchester Derby last time out.  Three back the son of Dehere and Storm Dance was a romping winner in Louisiana Downs’ Grade III Hoover Handicap.  Fast, fit and ready to rumble.

Dundey Farms sends out recent auction purchase KC Is Biz Z for this test.  The handsome son of Rousillon and the Law Society mare, Skeleton Bingo, has spent much of his career racing in claimers.  He arrives in decent form having hit the board in his last two efforts.  But this group looks to be a bit beyond his capabilities.  Nice horse in a very tough spot.

Kaif Stables claimed Tremptim(FR) out of maiden fifty claimer in late May and the colt has been awesome ever since.  The son of Trempolino has won for Greg at three distances from ten to sixteen furlongs.  Two back he won a two mile stake by a block.  Last time out he ran second in a mile and a half stake but posted a 111 speed number for that runner up effort.  Big shot at a square price.

Johari is an intriguing longshot at 35-1.  Bred and conditioned by Renaissance Man R. Bennett Okerstrom, the rapidly improving daughter of Johar and Frio Member arrives in peak form.  Two back she drew off to win a nw2L allowance at ten furlongs.  Last time out she replicated that feat in a higher level conditioned allowance.  The 98 speed rating she earned in that event was her best yet and it looks very much like this filly’s limit has not been reached.  Could light up the tote board with only minor improvement.

S R Oil Fire is the second of three Barndog Stable starters.  And as his name suggests, the four year old Hazaam colt is on fire!  He’s riding the crest of a three race winning streak during which he has improved in each start.  Three back he won a thirteen furlong Danish allowance by ten under Batman Schardein.  Two back he crushed a Spokane Downs field and he topped it off in Connecticut with a stake win at this exact distance in a sizzling  2:00.4 (111).  Former $5,000 claimer is as good as any right now.

Rounding out our talented field is the race favorite, Lost My Halo.  The last of Barndog’s three monsters could not possibly be sharper as the sleek gray son of Devil’s Bag simply throws one big effort after another.  In his most recent engagement, Barndog’s four year old demolished a very strong open allowance field in Alabama while posting a 104 speed figure for the ten furlong trip.  I’m a little surprised that he’s favored but would not be surprised if he wins.

Come out early because the first 5,000 paid customers get a free autographed print of the infamous Barndog “towel photo.”  I know I can’t wait to get mine!
