The Cavalcade Turf Distaff

The Cavalcade Turf Distaff

California – While the East coast is busy with the Breeder’s Bowl, here in California we are showcasing the NWRC Cavalcade Cup races.  The Turf Distaff is for 3 & up fillies and mares, although only three and five year-olds were entered, and will carry the Cup purse of $250,000.  Although there is plenty of haze in the air from the California fires, the only smoke around here will be from the feet of the runners going a mile and three-eights.  Here is a look at the field by post.

On the hedge will be Victory Flight (10/1) a 5 YO speckled gray mare by Unbridled Song.  Trained by Melbry852, she has won 11 of her 36 career starts and comes into this race off a winning effort last time out in a 12 furlong allowance.  She probably prefers the front end but is versatile enough that she can also sit just behind the leaders and pounce down the stretch.  We have it on good authority that she is training well and that at 10/1 she might be worth a gamble.

Stop The Groom T (2/1) will be led out of the Priceless stable and is a tall, 5 YO gray mare by Runaway Groom.  She has seen the winner’s circle 12 times from 49 starts, although the last time was over nine months ago.  She seems to be in a good form cycle as she ran second in The Time Traveler and was third in The Sky Charm before flopping in the Grade I, Canada Turf.  Throw that last one out as being too tough for her and she looks good in here.

Breaking from post three will be The Kings Hunter (3/1) a shapely young 3YO filly by Azamour.  The dark brown filly hasn’t done much lately; her best recent finish was six back when she ran 3rd in the Grade I, 1000 Guinness.  She has won four of 18 but has been running against the very best and word around the backside is that she is training extremely well.  She will like the class drop and is listed as one of the favorites.  Ticketman0 will saddle.

Squirrel3 will lead up Subtlety (6/1) a pretty blood bay 3 YO filly.  She is lightly raced with only 10 starts and she has won three of them.   Best of all she is 7/7 in the money on the grass, never being worse than 3rd since switching surfaces and with her improving speed figures should be very competitive in this race.  The distance may be the unknown factor here but she has been closing well in all of her races.  She was second last time out at a mile, has a very good trainer and is well placed here.

Xtremely a Lady (7/1) is a bright 5 YO chestnut mare by Galileo and she is conditioned by Causeway.  She is a solid allowance mare and has won 4 of her 30 starts.  She has been running much shorter distances lately but has run well at this distance before.  She has hit the board but is another that has been winless for some time.  With 30 starts under her belt, she has some leg problems but it is always possible she has a few more good races left in her.

Lemon Drop Kid will be represented by Labeled Black (11/1) a 3 YO, dark chestnut filly owned and trained by Jdawg06.  She has raced over her head occasionally, but tries really hard when entered right.  She has run in all class of races, from Grade1’s down to allowances.  She has finished second in her last two starts, both allowances, but she is still eligible for non-two life with only a maiden win some nine months ago.

House Of Ballads (9/2) is good moving, 3 YO dark bay filly by Moon Ballad.  She’s got the breeding to run all day and has won four of her 12 starts.  Ably trained by Goldcity, she is coming in off a win last time out in The Smelly Mama.  She went wire to wire in that and the tactic has worked well in the past for her so she will probably try it again on Saturday.  She’s got the speed, loves the distance and should give a good accounting of herself.

On the outside will be Tons Of Guns (6/1) a plain, bay, 3YO filly by Langfuhr.  She has won two of her 22 starts but is another that has been winless in sometime.  She finished a good second two back in The Nijinsky Needle at 13 furlongs on the dirt.  She is switching back to the turf for this race and the only bump on her horizon may be the race will be too short for her.  Trainer Hamster prepped her with a sharp 3/8 work Tuesday in an effort to sharpen her up.

That’s the field for The Cavalcade Cup Turf Distaff.  It is a hard race to handicap but I see House Of Ballads going to the front with Subtlety catching her at the wire.  I’m the worlds worst handicapper so don’t bet the farm!  Good Luck to all.
