Perfect Win in South Africa

The main race on the card at the South African track was The SOUTHERN SLAPSHOT Challenge, a Stakes race over six furlongs for two-year-old fillies. It was named after a mare who won eight sprints on dirt at Allowance level and was placed in Stakes company. The going on Saturday was fast and nine runners went to post for this $80,000 prize.

The favourite was Love Of Diagrams (AUS), racing out of the delago stable, who was having her first run on the dirt. The early leader was the outsider, Joins The Chase (MD), from the inhalers stable, with Top Soul (KY), Radical Sasha T (CAN) and the favourite just behind. As they quickened at the halfway stage, the favourite was soon in trouble, and there were four in line vying for the lead as they turned for home, these being Champion Flower (KY) on then rail, Radical Sasha T (CAN), Top Soul (KY) and Joins The Chase (MD). As the early leader dropped tamely away down the home straight, Perfect Carbomb (MI), who had been right at the back of the field, came out of the pack to take up the running and went on to win by one and a quarter lengths under J. Smith for the oaklane stable. Champion Flower (KY) was second with S. Spence aboard for the meguire2nd stable and Radical Sasha T (CAN) was third with T. Lopez for tcopyright. Top Soul (KY) got the better of Barb’s Zippy (CA) in a duel for fourth place. Behind them were the disappointing second-favourite Dr Yap (CAN) and Joins The Chase (MD), while the favourite beat only one home, that being Andasham (IRE).

The winner, who was third favourite in the betting, completed the race in one minute eleven and three fifths, putting up a speed figure of 78.
