After my little vacation in Dubai I made a quick stop back in Kentucky for a few days and got rid of a little jet lag. But sitting still is not in my nature. So I got the itch quickly to find my next adventure. So I am off to Kansas to check out a nice group of 3 year old fillies that are running in the PJ Greenfeet Lady Turf Filly Dash. Looks like eight nice looking fillies will be heading to the starting gate on Saturday afternoon. The field of contenders does have three prior stakes winners and by the looks of things this should be a tough little race. I have had my morning stroll around the barns and have spoken to some of the jockeys and owners to see if they could give me some insight. The morning line odds and post positions have been set. Let’s go take a look at how these fillies stack up for this race.
Horse/Odds Owner Jockey
1. Uncle Rigo Chachin 4/1 oscarwilde G Alan
She has shown she can run on turf or dirt picking up four wins in her 14 career starts. This filly sired by Uncle Mo has won her last two Allowance outings coming from off the pace on turf. Her best speeds have come on the turf and she will need that to prove she can contend with these fillies as she moves up in class to challenge in her first stakes outing. Look for her to close the gap in her stretch run for the wire.
2. Went Too 7/1 carshammstable T Friar
She was claimed back on 06/16/2018 and then this filly sired by Include went straight into running in listed stakes races of which she has been unsuccessful in each of those tries. She last ran in the Mixed Signals Turf Filly Dash in Ohio. She ran a 94 speed and found herself 6th in that race 3 lengths off at the wire going 6 furlongs. She has shown improvement in her speed rating in her last two outings and could make a challenge.
3. Moon Stomp 9/2 oldmoonfarms17 I Lopez-Onna
This filly sired by Astrology has shown success on the dirt and will be making her debut on the turf. She had a Stakes win back in April going 6 furlongs in the Stayallnight Dirt Filly Sprint as she posted her top speed rating of 97. In her last outing on 08/04/2018 in the Furiously Gamble Dirt Filly Sprint at 6 furlongs she faded after the third call and finished in 5th and was 2 ¾ lengths back at the wire. If she can transition to the turf she could be a horse to watch.
4. Wind Bolt 8/5 rutledgeranch L Buchholtz
She is another stakes winner in the field and was sired by Excelebration. In her recent outings she has ran some pretty consistent speeds. Back in June in the 5 furlong Mamboflys Indy Turf Filly Special was when she last got her picture taken in the Winners Circle. In her last outing in the 6.5 furlong Turbo Yammy Turf Filly Sprint she was closing the gap but fell short placing 2nd in that race 1 ½ lengths back. She comes in as the top money winner in this field and deserves respect. She should be on the boards.
5. Celestial Mission 6/1 groovy F Smith
This Allowance winner comes in with one stakes attempt which came back in May of this year which was found to be a fruitless effort. But she is much improved since then and has mainly been running on the dirt. In her only career turf start she won that race going 4.5 furlongs. Can she transition back to the turf again and find the speed she needs to contend against this field is the question? She is sired by Commissioner and she is looking for her first time to hit the boards in a stakes effort.
6. Ravenna’s Ten 22/1 crandyiii M Chreky
The morning line odds makers were not kind to this Animal Kingdom filly today. She was claimed back on 07/08/2018. Her best success has come on the turf in her 21 career starts. She draws concerns today from the odds makers due to speed ratings and lack of stakes experience. She will really need to step it up today to have a chance in competing against this field.
7. Down By The Bay 5/1 winterset J Labarbera
This stakes winning filly sired by Dubawi comes in after a long rest. She last ran back on 05/26/2018 going 8.5 furlongs in the No More Options Turf Filly Route. She ran a speed of 96 and found herself 4th at the wire and was 3 ¾ lengths back when she faded after the 3rd call. She has won several stakes races in her career at 5 furlongs. I think this rest may have been good for her. Look for her up front if she comes back to her regular form. She should be a good one to watch in this field.
8. Bone Traveller 41/1 whalebone M Olsen
Sired by Lion Heart this filly comes to the party without an Allowance win. The odds makers found concern with her speed ratings and lack of experience. She last ran in Mexico going 4.5 furlongs against a small field in a $19,500 Allowance on the turf of which she placed 2nd just 1 length off the lead. She ran a 77 speed in that race and will need to find a lot more gas in the tank to contend against the tougher fillies in this race.
Good luck to all horses and all owners of this race. Most importantly have fun!!!
Skippy’s Picks
1. Down By The Bay: Comes in off a long rest. Likes the distance and should come back strong.
2. Wind Bolt: Top money winner in this field and she should find a spot on the boards.
3. Moon Stomp: If she takes to turf she should compete with this crowd.
Tarton’s Long Shot
Went Too 7/1: She keeps improving at the stakes level. Although she has taken a licking she keeps on ticking. She may surprise and find the board here.
